Paul Craig Roberts: The Greatest Gift For All

Christmas is a time of traditions. If you have found time in the rush before Christmas to decorate a tree, you are sharing in a relatively new tradition. Although the Christmas tree has ancient roots, at the beginning of the 20th century only 1 in 5 American families put up a tree. It was 1920 before the Christmas tree became the hallmark of the season. Calvin Coolidge was the first President to light a national Christmas tree on the White House lawn.

Gifts are another shared custom. This tradition comes from the wise men or three kings who brought gifts to baby Jesus. When I was a kid, gifts were more modest than they are now, but even then people were complaining about the commercialization of Christmas. We have grown accustomed to the commercialization. Christmas sales are the backbone of many businesses. Gift giving causes us to remember others and to take time from our harried lives to give them thought.

The decorations and gifts of Christmas are one of our connections to a Christian culture that has held Western civilization together for 2,000 years.

In our culture the individual counts. This permits an individual person to put his or her foot down, to take a stand on principle, to become a reformer and to take on injustice.

This empowerment of the individual is unique to Western civilization. It has made the individual a citizen equal in rights to all other citizens, protected from tyrannical government by the rule of law and free speech. These achievements are the products of centuries of struggle, but they all flow from the teaching that God so values the individual’s soul that he sent his son to die so we might live. By so elevating the individual, Christianity gave him a voice.

An outstanding and thought provoking article. We should all repent of our sins and contribute to a better future.

I agree with his laudatory comments on the virtue of placing

God-among-us "emanuel" Christ above earthly governmental artificial temporary powers.

BUT his concluding remark, "As we enter into 2013, Western civilization, the product of thousands of years of striving, hangs in the balance", seems to designate only westerners as the beneficiaries of Emanuel.

I would like to remind that Christ's New Covenant ("hesed") made ALL nations, including muslims, buddhists, atheists & all others, CHOSEN SONs & DAUGHTERs of GOD. ALL peoples were called to join the hesed covenant. (This is the main theme of the New Testament, but even in Old Testament Psalm 87, for example, people from "Egypt, Babylon, Philistria, Tyre and Ethiopia" are invited to join the CHOSEN God-children relationship.)

In other words, we humans are ALL equally individually chosen and LOVED by the source of the Universe :-)

agreed

We are one human family.

All religions are like rivers some more or less dirty yet all flow to the same ocean.

Merry Christmas Ytc.

Merry *Peaceful* Christmas to you, too, LL!

Yes, we are all heading back to the Ocean, la mer, the same, connected, body of life-giving water and ABZU :-)

BTW the pictographic elements for the Sumerian word for liberty (AMAR.GI4) is "returning to mother". . .

The rulers fear the most

...that we all discover that we are in fact ONE -- Brothers and Sisters.

Atheists and Liberty

I think he raises a good point about the compatibility of Christianity and Individual Liberty. Atheists just don't seem to get this very important point. It is Atheists, who are predominantly liberals, who push for big government because they don't want to have to go hat-in-hand to a religious organization for help. They despise people of faith SO much that they would rather destroy the country than to be offered help by religious folk. It was religious organizations that provided for the welfare of the underprivileged before the welfare state. This function was of vital importance for the preservation of a small libertarian government. Therefore Liberty cannot exist without a moral religious people.

Atheism is not compatible with Liberty. Atheist liberal communists have destroyed America.

Beautiful

Christmas bump!

“It is not our part to master all the tides of the world, but to do what is in us for the succour of those years wherein we are set, uprooting the evil in the fields that we know, so that those who live after may have clean earth to till." -J.R.R. Tolkien

Merry Christmas Anna

Thanks for a bump.

You should be very proud that Ron Paul himself follows you on Twitter.
