I personally like the hand crank.
I'm looking for a hand crank that can be attached to a bicycle! That would be killer! But this guy's setup is pretty good too. I think it will be hard to keep up with biking though. There's a lot of resistance and how long can you keep biking at that pace to keep the battery charging?
There's going to be resistance no matter what.
He has a good setup, there just isn't an easy way to generate power cheaply. Steam, but that can be dangerous. Still the most effective way to generate power for DIY people on the cheap.

I wonder how much easier it
I wonder how much easier it would be if you had a 2 or 3 seater bike. Then get as many as 3 people to cycle for an hour! ha,ha.
Pretty cool.
That's a surprising amount of power from that little motor. You'd have to keep it up for quite a long time to get enough to last but in a pinch, I'm sure it'd work just fine.
There's a company that uses a pendulum style setup for power generation in Germany I think. They save 25% on fuel working with gravity.. As well as another company that sends pendulum water pumps to third world countries. I wonder how well a pendulum setup would work for an off-grid situation.
Something to think about.
