Ron Paul On The Fiscal Cliff: "We Have Passed The Point Of No Return"
12-29-12
In a little under three minutes, Ron Paul explains to a somewhat nonplussed CNBC anchor just how ridiculous the charade that is occurring in D.C. actually is. This succinct spin-free clip should be required viewing for each and every asset-manager, talking-head, propagandist, and mom-and-pop who are viewing the last-minute idiocy of the 'fiscal cliff' debacle with some hope that things will be different this time.[my emphasis] "We have passed the point of no return where we can actually get our house back in order," Paul begins, adding that "they pretend they are fighting up there, but they really aren't. They are arguing over power, spin, who looks good, who looks bad; all trying to preserve the system where they can spend what they want, take care of their friends and print money when they need it." With social safety nets available to rich and poor, there is no impetus for change and "the country loses," but Paul concludes, the markets are starting to say "there is a limit to this."

The so-called "fiscal cliff"

The so-called "fiscal cliff" is simply the "threat" that the deficit might be reduced by $600 billion dollars -- about 40% of the deficit. Needless to say, if Ron Paul were president, and pushing through the $1 trillion of spending cuts that he favors, the media would not be talking about a fiscal cliff, they'd be talking about fiscal Armageddon. The conventional wisdom is that to work at all our economy and our government must get deeper and deeper into debt. That defies all common sense, and it is obvious that it will all come crashing down, but until that day comes the talking heads in the media will insist that we must keep spending and must keep increasing the debt.

One thing that makes this fiscal cliff different from the one that Ron Paul would favor is that $500 billion of the deficit reduction is in the form of tax increases rather than spending cuts. Well, I am in favor of increasing taxes -- not just on the rich but on the middle class. Why? Both the rich and the middle class keep voting for bigger government. Let them reap the consequences. The main reason entitlements are so popular is because people don't have to pay their full costs. Raise taxes so that all entitlements are fully paid for -- and then we'll see just how popular all those entitlements really are. Would the Republicans have been able to score points with the elderly by passing Medicare D if they had been required to raise taxes enough to actually pay for it? Yes, I know, the people here don't want bigger government and don't want more taxes -- but we are the tiny consistent minority. Look at all the Tea Partiers who say, "Don't cut Social Security, don't cut Medicare, and keep fighting those 'terrorists' in the Middle East!"

By the way, one part of the "fiscal cliff" Democrats don't want to talk about is the new tax increases that go into effect in the new year to pay for (part of) Obamacare. I say "part of" because of course as usual a major part of Obamacare will be "funded" by increasing the debt even faster.

That's what I was thinking about this fiscal cliff nonsense

They want all these benefits but when it comes time to pay for them, heaven forbid! I just saw an interview with a military "expert", he was bemoaning the cuts to the military, he said active duty having served multiple tours in the wars would be "put out on the street". I was thinking most of those guys would be happy to go home and I'm sure they would have no problem finding employment. Maybe this fiscal cliff will turn out to be a good thing.

where are the libertarian congressmen?

last I heard we only have a handful and there are hundreds of congressmen?

is there really a war going on because last time I checked nobody has stopped the powers that be from doing anything they want whenever they want

There are 2 wars going on right now

There is a WAR in the GOP because John Boehner has sold out EVERY principle that the Republicans have ever stood for.

Whatever happened to small government, fiscal discipline and balanced budgets?
Purge Boehner.

There is a WAR in the DEMS because Barack Obama has sold out EVERY principle the Dems have ever stood for.

BOTH have sold out their respective bases in order to favor certain large Corporations.

Let's pour petrol on the fire.
Wind up the grassroots of BOTH parties at EVERY opportunity.
America has been sold down the river by BOTH parties.

EXACTLY RIGHT

NOBODY is talking about cutting spending - it's the simple solution.

http://ian56.blogspot.co.uk/2012/11/it-is-very-easy-to-cut-1...

The easy solution to the Fiscal Cliff is to cut government waste and corporate largesse.
Neither Party has any plans whatsoever to do that.

It is VERY easy to see how to cut $1tn+ from Federal spending, just by cutting the WASTE - here's how.

Cut $500bn from military spending from the current $1,219bn in 2012.
By :-
Cut the $105bn p.a. budget for keeping 7,000 "contractors" in Iraq.

Cut the size of the worlds largest embassy in Baghdad - swap for smaller premises with someone else in the green zone and rent the rest out.

Bring back the 138,000 military that are currently stationed in Germany, Japan, South Korea, Italy & UK. Let them pay for their own defense.

Update 12/11 Drastically cut the $170 bn spent every year on building and supplying foreign military bases http://www.huffingtonpost.com/tom-engelhardt/military-spendi...

http://www.alternet.org/world/us-taxpayers-are-shelling-out-...

Stop buying reaper and predator drones at $36m a pop - they are counter productive.
Stop spending money on hellfire missiles that serve only to recruit more jihadists and radicalize the local and general Middle East populations because of the extremely high number of innocent civilians killed.

Stop the $1.45 TRILLLION development of the next generation of stealth aircraft.
The US hasn't had a plane shot down since the 1st Gulf War.
STOP the development of the next generation ballistic missile submarines. A new contract for the next stage was just signed for $1.8 billion.

Cut the size of the NSA and DHS, they are not cost effective.
A new $2bn datacenter is being built in Utah to store EVERY email sent in America.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/sep/15/data-whistl...
The budgets of NSA and DHS have been massively increased over the last few years.
The new datacenter is estimated to require $40 million worth of electricity every year
http://www.bibliotecapleyades.net/sociopolitica/sociopol_nsa...

Withdraw immediately from Afghanistan - saving $88bn on current war costs.

Update 11/25 The latest examples of Pentagon waste.
Did Jesus die for Klingon's too?

Update 12/29 Obama now plans to send troops into as many as 35 African countries in 2013.
http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/foreign-policy/item/140...

Cut the $100bn+ medicare fraud.

Cut the price of FDA drugs or go generic earlier.

Fine the big banks for the mortgage (and other) frauds they have committed that should bring in circa $100bn (one off).

Stop the phoney war on drugs and save $200bn p.a. and have a MASSIVE reduction in crime and corruption.
http://ian56.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/how-to-save-200bn-pa-fro...
Update 12/14 Proving the so called war on drugs is a joke. HSBC has just settled for a slap on the wrist fine of $1.9bn (equivalent to 5 weeks of revenues) for massive Mexican drug money laundering. No execs are to be criminally charged.
http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog/outrageo...

Stop the $200bn of new Pork issued each year.

Stop ALL foreign aid.

Stop ALL corporate welfare and subsidies.

Stop buying drones for border patrol.
They are VERY expensive, very inefficient, very easy to hijack their GPS systems and positively DANGEROUS to US citizens.
If a bunch of Texas University students can hijack a drone with less than $1,000 of equipment - you can be sure a Mexican drug gang can.
http://ian56.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/us-drones-are-threat-to-...

I just saved $1tn+ without even trying and I hardly cut any jobs at all.

Then we can start talking about cutting the next $500bn of government spending.
This would mean a reduction in the number of government bureaucrats.
This would be done in conjunction with tax cuts for the poorest which would be an economic stimulus and create more jobs.

We can also talk about closing tax loopholes whereby multinationals siphon off profits to tax havens abroad and pay very little or no corporation tax.
That money can then be used to reduce corporation tax on small and medium sized businesses who are the real job and wealth creators. This would also be an economic stimulus.
This has just been proposed to the G20 by the UK and Germany.
Update 12/28 Boy Is This A Galling Tax Dodge From Facebook: It Paid 0.3% Taxes On $1.34 Billion Profits
http://www.businessinsider.com/surprise-facebook-avoids-its-...
You can bet Facebook have a similar scheme to avoid paying US Taxes. Like Google's scheme to pay royalties to a subsidiary set up for the purpose in Bermuda.

Update 11/25
The tax increases proposed under the so called "Fiscal Cliff".
EVERYBODY's taxes are about to go up.
http://www.mondaq.com/unitedstates/x/178778/Income+Tax/2013+...
When you add in state/city taxes, income taxes are TOO HIGH for EVERYBODY.
The Payroll tax cut of 2% is also due to expire at the end of the year.
Increasing taxes on medium / low income workers will kill the economy and MUST be stopped.

The increase in taxes for the top 2% is equivalent to 8 days of government spending.
This is just fiddling around with the deckchairs on the titanic.

CUT the wasteful spending.

If you want to tax something - tax donations to churches.
Churches are a business like any other business.
They are a business selling faith.
Most of church spending is not charity - it is spent on employee wages (priests/pastors) and the upkeep of their buildings (churches).

Update 12/29
I agree with Robert Reich "we should be cutting military spending and Corporate Welfare"
http://ian56.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/robert-reich-we-should-b...

"In the end, more than they wanted freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all -- security, comfort, and freedom. When ... the freedom they wished for was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free."

So Good to Hear the Truth

It is so refreshing to hear Ron Paul pop up on the news occassionally and speak the plain and simple truth about matters. I really need that right now, there is so much deceit and lying going it is becoming difficult to deal with. Things are really starting to amp up in this country and the world. The good Dr. Paul is soothing medicine.

and

The only man who had the solutions to our problem yet media ignore him and call him nuts and what not but liberty goes on the brush fires are spreading :) keep up the positivity :D

Albert Camus — 'The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.'

yup

Just like his career..ended with a high note for truth and a low note for the politicians and country. I loved how he brought up Greece and the 15 times they've had a solution. The BIG fix will only happen when this system completely collapses. They'll keep on patching the zombie until it stops breathing.

Legalize contempt of

Legalize contempt of congress.

yep

There you have it...

...the straight dope from the good doctor: they're a bunch of criminals, and for all their play-acting, they have no intention of voluntarily halting their criminal operations. Full steam ahead direct into the iceberg...pssst, a guy told me there aren't enough lifeboats, so, uh...act accordingly.

"Alas! I believe in the virtue of birds. And it only takes a feather for me to die laughing."

I disagree with Ron on one

I disagree with Ron on one point if you dont consider alcohol a drug. Theyre not a bunch of drug addicts. Theyre a bunch of alcoholics.

Don't get it

Alcohol is a drug... and the drug in alcohol is actually sugar... alcoholism is a sugar addiction...that's why the people at AA have such a hard time quitting, because they sit there eating sugar donuts complaining about why they can't quit.

drug - something and often an illegal substance that causes addiction, habituation, or a marked change in consciousness

So yes, drug addicts, Ron is dead on, as usual

Isn't there a quote

Saying something like: "The worst way to promote an idea is to promote those that claims to represent it". I can't remember, but that really is a good quote describing promoting parties isn't equal to promoting ideas.

if anyone know the quote please reply to me

"Truth is Treason in an Empire that lies" - Ron Paul

Educate the masses, and win in the end.

Ron explains

Ron explains and it goes in one ear and out the other, and then right over her air-filled head. Right after he explains how 'both parties' preserve 'the system', Amelia asks which 'side' has more leverage. Of course, mass sheeple will easily relate to her mentality and not RP/reality.

"What if the American people learn the truth" - Ron Paul

They're like a bunch of drug addicts that just want another fix

The way RP said that with such disgust made me laugh. I've been around drug addicts and they are FAR less dangerous to my liberty and freedom than the criminals in DC. lol

Good thing I checked, I was

Good thing I checked, I was gonna post the same thing.

This two party system is failing

It's unable to govern. It's unable to handle its financial responsibilities, they will squabble between themselves until the dollar collapses and each will blame the other for the consequences.

same as it ever was

.

Ha ha ha

They're trying to put on a good show, but it just doesn't seem to be working!
