Doctor Says I Have Tumor- Chemo Only Answer (final update)

Hello Friends,

I am writing a final update because I know that Dean would want me to. You were all kind enough to offer suggestions and prayers in September and we meant to respond with thanks, but Dean had gotten worse and voluntarily went to the hospital a few days later. He was diagnosed with severe hypercalcemia, which is a complication of the late stages of cancer. He was treated and released when his blood calcium levels were brought back to normal. He was given hospice care at that point. In a week the levels went back up again and he was readmitted ten days later. This time the levels went down, but not to normal. His health continued to deteriorate and he passed on October 19.

By the time Dean was diagnosed in June, it was already way too late for minerals, diet, alternative medicine, or even the oil he had such faith in. His blood calcium levels were already rising in July. That was the reason he was vomiting, losing his appetite and energy. We thought the vomiting was a reaction to the oil, but he was in fact dying.

I cry daily and am so angry. The cancer didn’t suddenly appear in June when Dean was diagnosed. He’d been going to follow-up visits to his head and neck oncology surgeon, who happens to be the chief surgeon of a prestigious teaching hospital in NYC. He’d had a pinhole which discharged for more than six months before it opened up into a hole, and his doctors just said it was from the side effects of radiation and to cover it with gauze. We trusted them. And though we had no idea that this pinhole could suddenly open up, rapidly enlarge, that the arteries inside the hole could begin to deteriorate and bleed so that he’d need a blood transfusion, or that a huge mass of a tumor could develop around it; I’m sure that this world renowned surgeon who’s written countless books and articles, and has an entourage of interns following him all day, had some idea months before it happened.

The head and neck surgeon had told Dean two years before that if the cancer came back, he wouldn’t be able to help him. It can’t be proven, but I believe that since there was nothing he could do, he didn’t feel he needed to bother to tell us of the possibility or send Dean for tests to see if the cancer had spread. The surgeon may not have been able to help Dean and Dean certainly couldn’t have any more radiation, but maybe alternative medicine or the oil could have helped him if started six months earlier, before he was in the end stages of cancer. He didn’t give us a chance!

I’m sorry to to share such a horrible event. I’m still debating as to whether or not to post this.......I believe Dean would want you to know. He loved this site and valued everything that was shared and posted here. Peace to all of you. I hope the new year finds you all healthy and happy.

Sincerely, Susan

Susan, thanks for sharing the last moments of punkskaguy's

battle with his cancer. It is a heart-wrenching and horrific saga that Dean and you faced heroically. The memory of his spunky posts will continue to live within us. As others already mentioned, Susan, do continue to post here. Dean would want us to be with you at the time of your sorrow and *recovery*.

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I watched a member of my own family decline and finally pass from cancer and it is gut wrenching. Perhaps alternative medicine could have helped your husband had it been started sooner, perhaps not, but that decision should be up to those who ultimately live the consequences of their choices based on full disclosure.

Doctors (some, not all) in potentially terminal cases tend to believe that if they cannot help with their compendiums of knowledge, no one can and they spare bad news in deference to hope until there is no hope. What they fail to consider in these cases is that they do not know everything.

By posting the experience of your husband and yourself here you may help others make the decision of when it is right for them to seek other options in their own health care.

To be fair....This surgeon

To be fair....This surgeon did give Dean two "chances" before, as he removed cancer cells through surgery in 2009 and 2010. He was considered to be a "super surgeon", the best in his field, and we erroneously believed we were given the best option to prevent reoccurrence when Dean was advised to follow-up with radiation. Fear and panic prompted us to follow the advice offered us. I wish that Dean had sought guidance from The DP years before. Too late for Dean, but yes, ALWAYS seek other options and if your circle of friends and family aren't aware of any, ALWAYS open up to a forum like the DP!
Thanks for your reply, ibdeeter.
