Australian Gun Law Update
Submitted by legalizeliberty on Fri, 01/04/2013 - 13:49From: Ed Chenel, A police officer in Australia
Hi all, I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under.
It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars.
The first year results are now in:
Australia-wide, homicides are up 6.2 percent,
Australia-wide, assaults are up 9.6 percent;
Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!
In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent.(Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, so the criminals still possess their guns!)
While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.
There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly, while the resident is at home.
Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in 'successfully ridding Australian society of guns....' You won't see this on the American evening news or hear your governor or members of the State Assembly disseminating this information.
The Australian experience speaks for itself. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens.
Take note Americans, before it's too late!

Sorry to burst the bubble
Sorry to burst the bubble here, but this is either fake or at the very least out of date. Gun laws haven't been touched here in more than a decade.
Even if they had, Australia's culture and history is so different to yours that especially in relation to guns, very little can be drawn from this.
Best of luck seeing this threat to your culture and liberty off.
out of date
seems to be from 97 or 98.
Still going strong educating folks on the #gunrights #2A online every day.
I got it yesterday from one of my Australian friends.

Good Proof Update!
We posted the Video on the Australians giving up their right on our http://www.americanpatriotparty.cc website;
But it would be good to have a link besides this one that I can direct people to establishing this officer's statement.
Video if there is one.
Thanks

Australia is a little too
Australia is a little too close to China. When the Chinese one day make their move, the people of down under will wish they had kept their firearms.
statistics for england
The cited diagram depicting the rise in England's crime rate is explained on the Australian government's website as "the direct result of major changes to the way crime data are recorded in the England and Wales".
If that was the case, why does the crime rate continue to rise for 6 years? Did the government change the way of recording data for 6 consecutive years? I think whether or not the gun ban is a reason for the dramatic increase is a matter of speculation without further data.
statistics...
I think it's important for pro-gun people to realize that the basis of any argument against gun laws can never be statistics. In discussions I always try to get away from any statistical discussions back to the core of the issue: the freedom of a person to defend themselves and their family. Since violence and therefore weapons will never fully disappear, there will always be people around who want to harm other people. Therefore we need the right to be armed.
This approach saves us from embarrassing mistakes evaluating difficult and/or flawed statistical data.
ok, so if snopes is incorrect
and I certainly don't doubt that it could be, then what are the correct numbers? We really need to get this right, so we can better make our case. There is no way we can provide an intellectual arguement without accurate data.
Request to DP detectives to find the real numbers on Australia's real crime rates.
Note, if Snopes can be bias, most certainly the Australian gov is as well. We need to find multiple sources of 3rd party numbers. And see how they match up.

If every great fortune has a great crime behind it, then the greatest fortunes have the greatest criminals behind them. End the fed!
Even more alarming is what happened in Enlgand
when they banned handguns in 1997.
Check out this graph that compares crime rates between the countries.

uhm...i kind of doubt the truthfulness of this thing
for your consideration:
http://www.snopes.com/crime/statistics/ausguns.asp
The Mikkelsons who publish snopes..
..are notoriously left coast liberal and carry an anti-gun bias. That doesn't have anything to do with the truthfulness or lack of truth in the Australian letter.

I wouldn't take a "hey, mate"
I wouldn't take a "hey, mate" as concrete fact either. Hearsay is hearsay, and no different from getting the "straight dope" from a friend of a friend of a friend. Having said that, neither would I depend on Snopes for completely accurate information.

hmm.
is it 3.2% per 100k people or 3.2% up from last year in raw numbers. Some good points in that snopes article.
