Is starting a food storage more important than buying gold and silver?

Just wondering if I should be putting my money into stocking up food than buying gold/silver. Thoughts?

Thanks for the input ladies
Thanks for the input ladies and gents. I don't know what I would do without you all's intelligence.
I'd rather have a few things I need
A deep freezer and vacuum sealer is nice to put away meat, particularly if you are into hunting and can get fresh meat in season.
Dry beans, rice, nuts, quinoa, honey, peanut butter, wheat, and a lot of other foods can store a long time, even in poor packaging.
Medicines can usually be stored for at least a year.
Cleaning supplies and most toiletries have essentially unlimited shelf life.
A back up generator, kerosene space heater, lanterns, flashlights, general camping supplies are all good to have for emergencies.
I like to keep extras of things that I need more than barter money.
It depends how fast you need to boogie.
Three 1 oz. gold coins versus $5,000 worth of food: The supplies will be a lot harder to move around if you are in a hurry. A combination of both is best, IMO.
I would get a small amount of junk silver...maybe rolls of dimes
but I would focus on trying to get yourself set up to GROW food. Im sure having some MRE's around is a good idea, but i would try to get a small greenhouse or indoor set-up w/solar panels...the perfect set-up (in my opinion) is an aquaponics set-up. If done right, this will produce many organic vegetables/herbs/fruits, and you will also be able to harvest Talapia or catfish for meat. This, to me, is the system that will produce the most for the least. The equipment to get going will cost, but in the long run you can sustain a family of 3-4 with a fairly small set-up.
I'd rather have a bottle in front o' me than a frontal lobotomy

I saw a video of Peter Schiff
I saw a video of Peter Schiff talking about this several years ago. He said if you don't have a lot of money, better to use it on things you're going to need. An example he gave is buying shoes now for your kids even though they are too big now. Said it's better to pay $10 now than $100 in just a few short years for the same pair of shoes. For the past 5 years, that is how I've been raising my 7-year-old daughter. I've been picking up clothes 2-3 years older so we don't have to pay a lot when the time comes. I've heard some say stocking up on food for at least 6 months would be a wise thing. I don't have a lot of money and am thinking in terms of bartering when the times comes. Think about what skills you have. If you have an excess of something people are going to need, it could be even more valuable than gold. Buy seeds (stick with open-pollinated and heirloom seeds; if you keep seeds of hybrids, they don't always produce or produce right). Good luck!
If you're worried about economic collapse and money is short;
Just remember; if you can't buy gold, buy silver, and if you can't buy silver, buy rice. If stored correctly, rice will last for a VERY long time, and if things get bad, you can trade it for a lot more than just gold and silver. With it, you can buy A LOT of good will. You'll actually be able to help people.
Every house in America should have 500+ lbs of rice sealed up in a cool dry place.
yes.... I'd get a years
yes....
I'd get a years supply from www.preparewise.com (you can use Kerry Lutz's coupon code 'lutz' and get a discount).

Their food tastes GOOD, it's good for 25 years, and is GMO free. Trust me...I've spent LOTS of time investigating the best companies...these guys are at the top of my list.

Diversify
A few eggs in different baskets...take what you plan to spend, put 1/2 into silver. With the other half, divide into a couple things: 1. portable food (just in case you need to get out, or away from) 2. food stock (dry goods, spices, containers, sprouts, seeds, jars, etc.) 3. Knowledge (you will need to learn a lot about self sustainability if you are a typical American, then again, if you're here on the DP your not real typical are you ;))
Just my humble opinion. Good luck to you!
I say silver
But FOOD IS IMPORTANT
yes
Unless you think you can eat your gold and silver. In a real pickle food will be very hard to come by. Your gold might get you some, or the person with the food may just wait for you to starve, and then come take your gold...... Food, or even better, a means of food production is much cheaper and more valuable than gold for survival. Gold is better for economic survival, but who cares about economics when you have no food eh?

yes
And you need to set up for growing some of your food.
Are there any seeds that will
Are there any seeds that will last a long time. They go bad after a year right?
They will keep for much longer than 1 year
Here is a link to the ones we have.

Seed banks
(no, not THOSE 'seed banks' ;) ) freeze their seeds for long-term storage.
Like Fishy said, stored properly, they can be stored for very long periods of time. For the record, I just throw mine in the freezer. Seems to work well enough.
A signature used to be here!
Stored well, they can keep for hundreds of years.
I have some heirloom seed that was discovered in Native American (Anasazi?) pottery, cultivated and brought back to market after being stored for hundreds of years.
Germination rate decreases each year, but seeds can be viable for a long, long time.
And for the record, I had a premonition-like dream that when things go badly, heirloom seed will be more desirable than silver or gold as barter currency. Take it or leave it.
Food or metal? Food first, but start buying a little metal too. If you have $100, buy one ounce of silver and the rest in staples.
Things that keep forever and will be like currency:
Green coffee beans
Honey
Chocolate

add to that
books on things like homesteading, first aid (Army Field Manual is very good for that), foraging (I was amazed at the number of "weeds" in my own yard that are edible and GOOD for you, in a pinch!)
alcohol makes a GREAT barter item, and has a lot of other uses in a SHTF scenario as well. May want to buy a few bottles of your favorite whiskey or something similar.
never hurts to have a bunch of reasonably heavy duty plastic bags (contractor style), duct tape, and other useful things like that. You can use them MacGuyver style to do hundreds of things.
Likewise, having a decent amount of supplies of really basic things like soap and toilet paper, while it may make you want to giggle, will be no laughing matter when it comes to it. It's easy to buy and stock up now, we try and just buy a little extra when we go to the store espeically when it's on sale - get more and just put it into rotation and build up a store over time. you'll be happy to have that sort of thing when the shelves are bare.
these are the seeds I
these are the seeds I store...

I'm still planting seeds
