May I make a few nitpicky spelling corrections please?

Typos are different from misspellings. Typos I can understand, but when simple words are repeatedly misspelled, people start to focus on the errors rather than the message.

Maybe I'm nitpicking, but misspelling basic words makes the writer of the message look uneducated. In reality, this is not necessarily true. On the contrary, I have noticed that my students who are poor spellers tend to learn things by listening whereas my good spellers are more apt to pick things up visually. In an effort to help my auditory learner friends here at Daily Paul promote Dr. Paul in the most positive light possible, I'd like to note the following words:

It's spelled SPEECH. (not speach)

Thompson is going to LOSE. (not loose)

Giuliani is LOSING. (not loosing)

We still have A LOT of work to do. (alot is not a word)

Jeremiah Black makes great ADS. (not adds)

Inflation AFFECTS the value of the dollar negatively. ("A"ffect is an "A"ction, which means it's a verb)

Inflation has devastating EFFECTS on the value of the dollar. ("E"ffect is an "E"nd result, a noun)

ITS vs. IT'S -- do this little test: If you can replace this word with "it is", then use IT'S (It's impossible to trust voting machines...It is impossible to trust voting machines--it makes sense, so use the apostrophe) If replacing it with "it is" makes no sense, use ITS (The Constitution is precious, so we must keep its message alive...The Constitution is precious, so we must keep it is message alive--this makes no sense, so no apostrophe)

When discussing elections, these words come up so frequently that I felt a need to point them out.

We're in this fight together and I want to help my team look as polished as possible by doing my little part!

Is spelling really that important?

If you can decipher what the writer is communicating, they have accomplished their task...

There are people who had to learn english as a second (or 3) language.
Imagine that ! :)

Yes, it is. The Key Word is "Decipher"

I don't believe poor spelling should necessarily count against the writer. Content, intent, meaning are still more important.

But poor spelling and grammar cause the reader (some readers) to stumble. It's like tripping over a wrinkle in the carpet or finding the doorway blocked with a chair. This is especially true when the wrong word is used, such as "why did he loose?" Immediately, I think "loose what?" Screws are loose.

It is also true that in various languages, such Fortran, PHP, BASIC, HTML and others, spelling is critical to communication.

I stand corrected on one of your mentioned spellings. I'll not tell which one though.

I'll add one i see sometimes. There and their.

1) Look over THERE at that fat guy, oh wait, it's Mike Huckabee.

2) Ron Paul won in New Hampshire, but some one stole THEIR votes.

Seperate or Separate? I

Seperate or Separate? I always get confused on this the most.

Rediculous instead of Ridiculous.

ummm

It's RIDICULOUS.

1) I would look RIDICULOUS if I were to canvass my neighborhood in my pink pajamas.

Here's one I see often

"there" instead of "their"

Thank you for your kind words and your list of hints.

I am currently working on my PhD in computer science and yes, I STILL find spelling to be a huge challenge. If it weren't for spell check, I don't know what I do. The words that get me are the "know" vs "no" and "there" vs "their" etc. These mistakes can sneak by the spell checker. I technically know the difference, but it consistently comes out wrong.

Knowledge is what you Know

I assume you don't spell "knowledge" "nolledge." I actually have trouble with this one; sometimes I forget the "d."

"No" is one of the very first words baby learns, although they probably have various definitions for it. "Hot" they understand the same way.

Here and t(here) describe a location. I've never quite figured out how to remember "their" except that it's not "there" or "they're" ("they are").

Nitpicking the Paulies' spelling and punctuation

My observation is that the public schools no longer accentuate the need for spelling words correctly. They don't bother to "educate" students and as a result we have a nation of poor spellers. There's nothing that says we can't improve our grammar. Spelling and correct punctuation are an important part of communication. Therefore I thank you for being "nitpicky."

Before I hit the "post comment" box I look over my commentary for mistakes. Fortunately the creator of Daily Paul gave us editing capability.

Another interesting

Another interesting phenomenon is how ALL CAPS is harder to read because the eye skims the tops of letters. When letters are lowercase, their heights are more variable and thus more easily discernible, but UPPERCASE ARE ALL THE SAME HEIGHT SO THEY START TO BLEND TOGETHER AFTER A WHILE, FORCING THE READER TO FOCUS MORE INTENTLY WHICH CAUSES EYE FATIGUE. DON'T USE ALL CAPS UNLESS YOUR VOICE WOULD BE RAISED IN A FACE-TO-FACE CONVERSATION!

I actually find that concept fascinating

and I'm in agreement with all here that poor spelling is not indicative of stupidity, but there's a reason newspapers have editors. There's a reason companies pay astronomical amounts of money for package design even though the packaging gets tossed in the trash 10 minutes after purchase.

First impressions are important. If ronpaul2008.com were full of spelling errors, would we find it acceptable or would we want them to fix the mistakes?

No, this is not the site of the official campaign, but we represent Dr. Paul. Making a good impression on Huckabee or Romney supporters is a good thing, I believe. I don't think anyone here is looking for grammatical and spelling perfection, but giving posts a quick glance before posting doesn't hurt.

Jesus is my Lord and my God, and Ron Paul, champion of all things freedom, including religion and the free exercise thereof, is my choice for president.

federalized public education.....

people aren't stupid they are just horribly miseducated.......(is miseducated even a word??)

I went to a public school, and I pretty much had to educate myself about the world.....and the federal government is now exercising so much power over education it is destroying everything.....every teacher I have ever heard of hates no child left behind....
