Giant squid filmed in Pacific depths, Japan scientists report

Enlarge Screen grab from footage captured by NHK and Discovery Channel taken in July 2012 shows a giant squid in the sea near Chichi island.

The squid was spotted at a depth of 630 meters using a submersible in July, some 15 km east of Chichi island in the north Pacific Ocean. Scientists and broadcasters said Monday they have captured footage of an elusive giant squid roaming the depths of the Pacific Ocean, showing it in its natural habitat for the first time ever.

Modern-day scientists on their own Moby Dick-style search used a submersible to descend to the dark and cold depths of the northern Pacific Ocean, where at around 630 metres (2,066 feet) they managed to film a three-metre specimen. After around 100 missions, during which they spent 400 hours in the cramped submarine, the three-man crew tracked the creature from a spot some 15 kilometres (nine miles) east of Chichi island in the north Pacific.

The best squid-vid ever made, right here.

This diver noticed the Humboldt squid flashed as an apparent form of communication, so he made himself a giant squid sized flashlight and took it diving...

Humboldt squid/Mexican mafia

The Mexican gangsters dump dead bodies in the Sea of Cortez because those Humboldt squid will eat every last piece. Those things are devils! They will ruin your fishing QUICK, and they love to grab your iron jigs, bring 'em to the top, LOOK at you, then release the jigs so they rocket back towards the boat. When it gets real bad, the local fishing guides go out en masse during the night to try and kill as many of these monsters as possible.

And this crazy mo-fo went out there with the Mafia and the squid and did this. Turns out they have a softer side, too - lol!

Dead ones get found here and there

One alive one was filmed above the waves once, I believe.

This is the first filmed alive below the waves. The dead ones seem deflated and certainly don't sparkle like this. It's like seeing a totally new creature because of how different it looks alive.

Those things are so creepy. Giant squid and other such like creatures are why I am afraid of the ocean. Thanks for the article though, I always like the weird stuff articles and the science and technology ones!

I held a small...

...squid in Hawaii back in 2002. The tour boat guide asked if I had on sunscreen because it was turning white. I said "yes" and he took it from me. He said that I was poisoning it and it could die from that. So, just wear sunscreen when you go into the ocean...lol! On the other hand, if it poisoned the squid, what is it doing to us?

Ok, noted. I shall carry sunscreen with me when I go into the ocean and squirt it at any oncoming squid!

Seriously though.... there is s**t in the ocean that can/will f**k you up!

That's Interesting..
