Obama Officially Nominates Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense

I don't know much about this guy yet, but the more I read, the more I like. Turns out, I guess if he's confirmed by the Senate, he would be the FIRST person ever of enlisted rank to be in charge of our military. Sounded odd, but I guess it's true. I just hope he's legit.

Hagel: “I am a United States senator, not an Israeli senator. I support Israel, but my first interest is I take an oath … to the Constitution of the United States. Not to a president. Not to a party. Not to Israel.

A few years after famously bucking his party in opposing a U.S. troop "surge" in Iraq, Hagel voted against sending 30,000 additional troops in 2009 to Afghanistan -- a move that put him at odds with Republicans and Obama.

Perhaps we should all contact our Senators and let them know they better not attempt to under mine the confirmation of Mr. Hagel as new Defense Secretary...

This Guy Is A Full On Globalist

Don't trust him. Nobody that Obombya nominates is good for us.

I already posted a comment that if Bill Kristol hates him, then

I'm for him. But, I just read this article on Real Clear Politics and the names mentioned there make me a bit nervous: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/articles/2013/01/09/veteran...

Still gotta wonder what's up with this nomination.

There is another DP post on this subject with a link to a nice summary by Pat Buchanan that is very much worth checking out: http://www.dailypaul.com/267718/neocons-fear-this-chuck-hagel

I agree, Hagel is a good choice.

"Chuck knows that war is not an abstraction," Obama said. "He understands that sending young Americans to fight and bleed in the dirt and mud, that's something we only do when it's absolutely necessary."

And as strategic a nomination as Hagel is, the nomination of Brennan is an equally masterful move. John Brennan was a strong opponent of many of the policies of the Bush administration, such as the pre-emptive war in Iraq and coercive interrogation tactics like waterboarding.

In addition, Brennan was the first Obama administration official to publicly acknowledge the administration's highly secretive overseas drone program. Although Brennan defended the legality of the overseas program and credited it with protecting American lives and preventing potential terror attacks, that admission will put a SPOTLIGHT on the controversial drone program.

The American Civil Liberties Union voiced its concerns over Brennan's nomination, saying the Senate should not move forward until it is clear the nominee "will end its targeted killing program."

The beginning of BO's 2nd term shows to be interesting, indeed.

Oh, yeah...

Slowly but, surely, we are winning. The only question remaining is how long will it take for our people to taste victory. I don't think I will be alive when the time comes but, to know that it will come will have to be enough for me.

Maybe I am just tired after a few long days

BUT - can we all STOP. THEY ARE ALL EFFED UP. Why do we sit here and debate the merits of appointments when we know they are all the same. I dont care WHY BO appointed him - probably to piss off the Neocons(allegedly) and have a little side show on the nomination to distract the masses while they write up sweeping tyrannical legislation - but does it really matter. WHOEVER IT IS - THEY ARE IN BED WITH THOSE DOING THE APPOINTING AND THE GOVERNING WHICH MEANS THEY ARE IN BED WITH THE TYRANTS. WHO GIVES A SHIT!!!They didn't get to where they are at being moral men - they got there by doing the deads of evil men.
Frankly the news that we are pulling out of Afghanastan would have thrilled me a few years ago - now it makes me nervous that the military presence HERE is going to increase.

People- the lie is up - the latest circus with the taxes makes it clear - Boner IS Obama IS Pelosi IS name them. There are only a handful left who are not in on it(and Boner effectively neutered them). When THEY do the appointing - I will then consider the merits of a debate on such a person.

Until then - do not get a fools hope - whoever it is - they are against us just like the rest.

What is going on here?

BO nominates this guy (which is somewhat agreeable but I'll have to do my due diligence in the meantime to find more out about the guy), but then Nominates Brennan as CIA director, a guy who expanded Drone warfare and promised to "give the cia the tools they need (ie more drones and opportunities to use them.)

The SoD Nomination and the CIA Nomination is like oil and vinegar, they do not mix. All I can come away with is this is a political stunt, a ploy, theater. Example, he nominates Hagel who he knows the GOP is at odds with, they deny his Nomination, and BO says, "I tried to be bipartisan and they just don't want to work with me."

Ask yourself why he would appoint two people who are at odds over FP to two of the highest posts in the MIC. It does not make any sense.

Ya gotta wonder what Obama is up to with that Hagel nomination.

My heart wants to believe that it was made in good faith. My head keeps telling me it's a political chess master's move. In any event, I have no faith in the current Congress that Hagel would be confirmed by that bunch. President Obama should know that, too. So, what's up with that move? What is the real goal?

Hmm ... the Neocons hate him ...

... sounds good, so far.

It's better than the Neo Conservative's foreign policy

It's not the non-interventionist foreign policy we want. But it's better than the Neo Conservative's foreign policy. At least we won't bomb Iran or be Israel's donkey. I really resented PM Netanyahu addressing our Congress while Obama was abroad.

Remember this? http://www.c-span.org/Events/Israeli-Prime-Minister-Addresse...

I remember

and it made me want to throw up. Congressman clapping so long I thought their hands would fall off, in stark contrast to whenever Dr Ron Paul speaks in front of congress, usually to an empty audience. It still boggles the mind. All these people are whores of the highest caliber. It is just bizarre when you put things into context and perspective. I hope Hagel somehow gets in, but he has an uphill fight against all the sold out whores. Not sure what Obama is doing, maybe it is throwing the MAJORITY of Americans a bone....they must realize by now that the American temperament is ticking time bomb. Those in power should reconsider all their crazy world dominance strategies and perhaps try to diffuse it.

ANYTHING to piss off Lyndsey Graham and John McCain is allright with me.

Okay, well now that I've had time to actually

spend a couple hours reviewing Mr. Hagels past, I don't think I'll stick by my comment of "the more I read the more I like" in the OP. To say the least, Mr. Hagel has a VERY mixed voting record..Purple Heart Veteran or not, I don't think I support this man and If there's any way of having this post removed from the front page, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Chuck Hagel supported the Patriot Act, he supported stripping Habeus Corpus from Gitmo detainees, he thought it was okay for wiretapping without warrants, he thinks it's okay to do business with entities linked to terrorism (as in Halliburton selling Nuclear technology to Iran etc.), and he also thinks we should follow the CFR's recommendations of engaging Syria and Iran. These are only a few of the MANY reasons not to support this man, but I'll let others make their own judgements. I apologize for the "praise" in the OP without further research...Maybe we should contact our Senators and tell them to NOT confirm Mr. Hagel as Defense Secretary.

And yes, I just down-voted my own post :-)

De criminalize Liberty!

Yeah, you're right ...

... he supports torture and other assorted nastiness.

Not surprising, since he is nominated by Barry.

What should anybody expect?

Since we know a libery-oriented person is NEVER gonna get nominated by Barry, it's at least fun to see the neocons get their knickers in a twist.

Stands To Reason

that if Obama likes him then we should not.

He elected a republican

so he can blame his horrendous foreign policy on them. This is a political move, not whats in the best interest for the county decision.

Hagel will be backed into a corner. We will see how this plays out.

I think the guy

is pro national ID.

Good for Pres Obm. He kept his word (at least for this

appointment). I hope Mr. Hagel will be allowed to remain an independent thinker as a Def Sec. . . and not be forced to flip 180 degrees like Harold Koh & other court jesters.

Don't hold your breath

while waiting.

I can see it now

Make him out to be a non-interventionist so every war under flimsy pretexts seems more justified.

The power to destroy a thing is the absolute control over it

Israel does not worry

Israelis may have a laugh that American anti-Sermites and muslim immigrants are eager to support Obama's choice. Did not the same folks whined about that Jews control USA, Bush and Obama? Since 70% of American Jews voted for Obama, it means American Jews have made Hagel's nomination possible.

Israel is moving to political center-right. Netanyaho basically supports Rand Paul's idea of cutting foreign aid to all. Israel's most popular centrist parties do not give a hoot about Bush, Obama, Hagel, EU, Abbas or American Progressive/GOP Jews.

It's high time a Secretary of

It's high time a Secretary of Defense was a man who has enlisted and served. Maybe he will be less likely to put boots on the ground, as he would know what that would feel like to be a part of.....

*Wisconsin Constitution* Article I, Section 25 "The people have the right to keep and bear arms for security, defense, hunting, recreation or any other law-abiding purpose"

A sudden concern

Obama has a record of hiring and surrounding himself with people of "impeccable character" to oversee and justify things like the kill list. Is he doing something similar here? Is he choosing someone who is known for being pro-peace to spearhead a war with Iran?

I have to wonder what's so "in your face" about this nomination. Is it because he doesn't bend over backwards for Israel? Is that all there is?

Thank you for doing the research you have done. I'll have to do some of my own. So far, he seems far more promising than other people the president could have elected.
