Take a friend shooting day!

I was headed out to my local gun range about two weeks ago. I had to stop at the sports store to pick up some 9mm and 45 colt rounds when I ran into one of my old buddies from high school. We walked through the aisles catching up and when we finally came to the firearms section of the store. Almost immediately my friend started talking about gun control.

He rambled on for quite awhile, and after he finished I asked him one question...."Have you ever handled any guns before?" His answer was no. So, since I was headed to the range anyway I invited him to come with me. We proceeded to spend the next couple hours going over proper gun safety and range practices. You could tell he was really nervous at first but after awhile he warmed up to the idea of firing the gun. It got a little bit expensive firing all those 45 colt rounds but I just kept my mouth shut. This person was against guns only hours before, but was now standing next to me firing off round after round. (With a big smile on his face mind you.)

When the rounds I had purchased that day went dry, I packed up my firearms and showed my friend the proper way to case your guns, put them in the back seat, and dropped him off at home.

I just revived a call about 20 minutes ago. My friend just got back from the store. He went and bought his first gun...a Smith and Wesson 9mm sigma series. I have debated with people on many occasions about our right to bear arms and usually I get nowhere. So it just blew me away that with this friend all I had to do was take him to the range!

I propose that we all find a friend, a coworker, a parent, a neighbor, and take them shooting!!

Loved this story!

Sounds like you might be able to get together with your old buddy on a more regular basis now : )

Right on! "Take a friend shooting day" should be promoted.

Your idea is excellent and I hope that it catches on and people who are able to let a friend here and there burn through their bullets will do this.

What would be amazing is if your idea caught on and maybe somehow gun ranges, gun owners associations, even local police, etc. could sponsor something like this once or twice a year -maybe sponsorships to provide the ammunition might be a possibility.

Something like that for young people would especially be a hit(no pun intended.) But I guess there might be too much liability and the need to screen those on anti-depressants, etc.

Thanks again for the idea and being generous enough to let a friend have so much fun.

when people were saying

Ammo was hard to find, I called Bass Pro. They were out of everything. I called Gander Mountain, they said no problem. the 20 mile ride was worth it. They even had bulk 9mm.

Reloaders

if you can find bullets

at least in my area all 223 556 9mm is long gone outta stock. Even online it's hard to find anything without getting butt raped. And I am not going to use my emergency ammo.

Anyone see any online store that has 223 or 556 for a reasonable price? Last I checked 1000 round box 556 was going for 1k.

.

i already check this site

They are the ones selling 1000x556 for a grand.
Almost everything else is out other then the pricey stuff thats much over a dollar per bullet

Your right...

i cant even find 223 online except at a few sites. nothing in bulk though. Makes me glad i have a surplus at home. Can I sell ammo to a private party without a license? because i might be able to help some people out because i do have quite a surplus. (And my wife thinks im crazy for buying ammunition every time we go shopping.)

My brother

My brother has always been 'gun averse'. He never really cared for hunting like his father, our brother and myself, and he usually would just watch if we were sporting a small caliber rifle or pellet gun. Anyway, this Thanksgiving when we were all home he showed some interest in hunting (I had just recently claimed a doe) so I got to teach him how to load and handle a shotgun. It was fun teaching someone how to use a gun, even if he never intends to own one.

It feels good don't it?

The rush you get when you open someones mind to something new is exhilarating.

You need a FOID card

to go to a range where I live ;( The law says the state has to provide one if you're eligible within 30 days once you send in for it, but it takes 2 months plus for them to get it to you, kinda ridiculous.

Good going man!!! I'd have to

Good going man!!! I'd have to second the above comments, normally the "younger crowd" that is anti-gun has very little/no expierence.

Nice move:

I have been doing that for a long time.
I have a friend that lives close and we set up a nice personal range that I take people to allot.
I have had quite a few that have never fired one in their life that now have huge arsenals at home.
It's always nice to share a common interest with folks. Even if they don't know it yet.

Nice story.

There are people who have not handled guns before who simply might need to be exposed to them and have appositive experience around them. I fall in that category. If you are a gun owner and know anyone who is nervous around guns, this is probably a great way to help them.
