Guy dropped off laptop for me to repair and referenced a commercial on TV

A guy my wife does some typing for needed his laptop looked at because it's running slow, acting strange, etc. He brought it by and dropped it off for me this morning and told me he had considered going to some website that claims to clean up your pc remotely. I asked him what website? He said, "you know, that company that keeps advertising on TV" I laughed and told him he would have to be more specific than that...I've been off TV for over a year. He looked at me kind of strange and said "you never watch TV?" I told him nope, never...and its one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life.

What about sports he asked? Nope, I tried to watch sports shortly after unplugging from the box but even sporting events are seen though a new lens after tuning out for just a few weeks. The players and commentators are exposed as sell outs. They all appear to be Corporate shills, they seem to pledge blind faith to the state through unwavering patroitism, and the whole events look like meaningless distractions.

It's the first year that I have no clue who all the quarterbacks in the NFL are/were and had I not seen the front of a local newspaper in an outdoor rack I wouldn't have known who played in or won the NCAA championship. I used to know who was hurt and how many points were scored in most games. I used to bet with a bookie and all that mess.

I spend most of my time now online, outside, or actually doing stuff. Those of you still in the habit of watching TV should turn it off for a month and see how different the world looks when you are not being told what to think, what to buy, and who you should admire. I was stunned how much influence TV had over me. I honestly never thought the programing was having any effect on me at all. I was SO wrong.

If that tells you how old I am! If not, I remember seeing Kennedy's funeral on TV

When Fascism goes to sleep, it checks under the bed for Ron Paul!

face it, tv sux

and people pay anywhere from 50 to 100 dollars or more a month for it , what a joke , paying to be propagandized and brainwashed ,

i've come to the consensus that sports, religion, tv, are all distractions to keep people from caring about politics and what gets put into these bills that are illustrious politicians vote on.

Nice Point...

Imagine if we all used our ex-cable/satellite money for one, focused purpose. Kinda like the unions.

we are going on 3 years...

with no network television... it was one of the best things that i have done for the mental health of my family.

I use Blue Wave, but don't expect one of THEIR silly taglines.

just came back from visiting a family member in Hawaii

He worked all over the world, adopted two children, was a major player in the veterans of foreign wars, etc. and retired in Hawaii. Though he watched a bit of football, he and his family rarely had the tv on.

They happily piddled about keeping everything spotless, staying on top of everything, entertaining people, and preparing for the future. It seemed so effortless, but really, they just prioritized well...entertainment last.

Lived on Kauai for a while

Never watched ANY tv... Sports were what you did outside all day.

Leaving TV and getting al news online is certainly the best.

That's Why I have a youtube channel that explains issues.

Wow, successcouncil is YOUR youtube channel!

Kudos to your informative shows! It's an honor to have you at the DailyPaul.

No news. At all.

I just can't watch TV news. It's so biased an anti-informative. I think that's a common sentiment around here...

...But if you want me to stop watching reruns of Fraiser, you're out of your damn mind. :D

I have cable...

but I don't watch it. I can't handle it. I find it extremely insulting.

For me, commercials turn into a never-ending boycott list for insulting my intelligence. It's too much to keep up with.

I need to be more Buddha.

NOTE: I am not advocating violence in any way. The content of the post is for intellectual, theoretical, and philosophical discussion. FEDS, please don't come to my house.

if you pay for your cable and dont watch it

then why pay for it ? please tell me you get it free or something

we all need to vote with our dollars , buy guns and dont pay for tv

Hoooraaayyyyyy!!!!

Yet another example of a person unplugging and having a better life for it!!

Good for you!!!

I posted this after the Sandy Hook Massacre: http://www.dailypaul.com/266831/i-am-so-happy-i-do-not-own-a...

It is amazing to see the difference in life. For me anyway.. I haven't owned a television since 07 or 08. Television seems like a drug that most people are addicted to. My life is much happier and fulfilling.

Thanks for sharing!

People who say "But it doesn't affect me"

are only the ones who still have a TV. Challenge yourself to one month of NO TV. That means NONE, not settling for the little oe and turning off the big screen.
It has mass-hypnosis capabilities that people simply do NOT appreciate. But break free of them, and you understand.
I have never met anyone who said "I got rid of my TV but missed it so much I got another one."

Love or fear? Chose again with every breath.

I only ever watch TV for

I only ever watch TV for baseball or football -- and it's only to watch my favorite teams.

Other than that, I've done the same for a few years now. People reference commercials all the time and I have to tell them haven't seen it. Then they're say it's on all the time. Haha, but yeah I recommend doing it as well. There were TV shows that I was just a slave to, just said not going to watch them anymore. I had the urge to watch them, but after a while I didn't even care anymore.

Excellent...

:)

Question?

What is the NCAA?

I still watch some TV with the family but they hate it because I point out something that is actively influencing them about once ever 1-3 minutes. (That's after letting over half of them go by unchecked) I don't watch news, talk shows or reality. Pretty much stick to the odd sitcoms (mostly benign) and history/science stuff.

Once you get into this habit, it's easy to see both what they are saying that's wrong and why. I use it as kind of a barometer of how the mass public is being trained.
