Hacker, Activist Aaron Swartz Suicide

"Reddit, Creative Commons and Demand Progress co-founder Aaron Swartz committed suicide in New York City on Friday, Jan. 11. He was 26 years old.

The tragedy was confirmed to MIT's The Tech by Swarz's uncle, and also his attorney..."

Swartz explains the "suicide note"

It's going around that he wrote a suicide note in 2007, which is really a story about a guy named Aaron who does kill himself. It is a macbre story, but if that's all they've got as evidence of his depression, and they're not giving the method and whether or not there was a note right before adds to the suspicion.

Aaron Swartz explains why he wrote that piece:

"I think this is a bit unfair, but in spez's defense he may not know the whole story.
I was deathly ill when I came back from Europe; I spent a week basically lying in bed clutching my stomach. I wrote a morose blog post in an attempt to cheer myself up about a guy who died. (Writing cheers me up and the only thing I could write in that frame of mind was going to be morose.) People got freaked out and misinterpreted it as a suicide note (perhaps understandably; I wasn't exactly in my right mind when I wrote it). Alexis even had the cops break into my apartment. I took it down to avoid further trouble for a while; it's back up now with some minor edits ("Alex" used to be "Aaron")."

At any rate, I'm wondering if the problem got fixed? We weren't able to find anything on this end, and I'm hoping that it just solved itself? I ran into the same problem with the DP house account (P.Au.L)

The PACER database is where all the case law is kept in the public domain, however the gov had an access fee to keep the mundanes ignorant. I never knew about this database before today. But Aaron reversed engineered it, hence RECAP, the free version for the people to research the law for themselves. Lawyers no likey.

His group Demand Progress was on the front lines of battling SOPA/PIPA legislation. And there is much more to his credit. He did more in his 26 years than most people do in a lifetime. Whether he offed himself or not, be inspired by his example.

The title to the post is "Look at yourself objectively" and he begins with a synopsis one of my favorite books - "The Cry and The Covenant."

Aaron writes:
"In the 1840s, hospitals were dangerous places. Mothers who went in to give birth often didn’t make it out. For example, at Vienna General Hospital’s First Obstetrical Clinic, as many as 10% of mothers died of puerperal fever after giving birth. But there was some good news: at the Second Clinic, the number was just 4%. Expectant mothers noticed this — some would get down on their knees and beg to be admitted to the Second Clinic. Others, hearing new patients were being admitted to the First Clinic that day, decided they’d rather give birth in the streets.

Ignaz Semmelweis, an assistant at the First Clinic, couldn’t bear it. He began desperately searching for some kind of explanation for the difference. He tested many things without success. Then, in 1847, Semmelweis’s friend Jakob Kolletschka was performing an autopsy when a student accidentally poked him with a scalpel. It was a minor injury, but Kolletschka got terribly sick and ultimately passed away, with symptoms rather like the what the mothers had. Which got Semmelweis wondering: was some “deathly material” on the corpses responsible for the deaths?

To test this, he insisted the doctors begin washing their hands with chlorinated lime (which he found best removed the stink of death) before handling the pregnant women. The results were shocking. In April 1847, the mortality rate was 18.3%. Semmelweis instituted handwashing in mid-May and by June the mortality rate had crashed to 2.2%. The next month it was even less and later that year it reached zero — for the first time ever.

You’d think doctors would be thrilled by this incredible discovery. Instead, Semmelweis was ridiculed and attacked. He was fired from the hospital and forced out of Vienna. “In published medical works my teachings are either ignored or attacked,” he complained. “The medical faculty at Würzburg awarded a prize to a monograph written in 1859 in which my teachings were rejected.” Even in his native Vienna, hundreds of mothers continued to die every year.

Semmelweis turned to alcohol and his behavior became increasingly erratic. In 1865, he was committed to a mental institution. There he was beaten by the guards, placed in a straitjacket, and locked in a dark cell. He died shortly thereafter, at the age of 47, from an infected wound."

Please go to the website to read his insight into this incredible story, and ask yourself why someone with this type of view on life last August would be suicidal today?

What he wrote dumbfounds me.

What he wrote dumbfounds me. To my recollection, what he wrote almost is verbatim what I read in a book. This book is about the demise of traditional medicine with focus on a method of it and the rise of pharmaceuticals in Western countries but mostly the United States. This book is unique. Stunning that Swartz mentioned this information and that it's almost verbatim from a book I consider the foundation of changing, of breaking apart, the medical complex to its forerunner and foundation it crushed, built on and sewed up to prevent competition, the free market. I'll have to find out which college Swartz attended and whether he took at least one philosophy course and who its professor was if he did study philosophy.

fishy, I haven't read the Swartz's website, but when he wrote about Semmelweis, did he discuss Semmelweis' contribution to medicine terminology, a contribution he was unaware of likely?

According to Carter, the last name of the author of the book I've been talking about, Semmelweis' contribution was the leading force against tradition medicine.

If Swartz didn't write about this contribution, then what I said in my comment below is wrong. Rather than Swartz and Carter writing about Semmelweis similarly, they would have written him fairly differently.

Hello, fishy, I reread my book containing the chapter on Semmelweis. The book's author, a philosophy instructor, and this young man wrote about Semmelweis, but what they said, but mostly how they said it, differ from each other greatly. My mistake.

When someone as high-profile as this "commits suicide"

the journalists writing about the story have a duty to at least acknowledge the fact that readers will be interested to know how it was determined for absolute sure that it was indeed a suicide.

Swartz was dedicated to sharing data and information online. He worked tirelessly to develop and popularize standards for free and open information sharing.
