A group of like-minded patriots, bound together by pride in American exceptionalism, plan on building an armed community to protect their liberty.
The group, named Citadel, intends to purchase 2,000 to 3,000 acres for the project in western Idaho. The community will comprise of 3,500 to 7,000 families of patriotic Americans who "voluntarily choose to live together in accordance with Thomas Jefferson's ideal of Rightful Liberty."
According to the Citadel website, Rightful Liberty means that "neighbors keep their noses out of other neighbors' business, that neighbors live and let live."

enlightened disengagement is the weapon of choice
You can do it anywhere any time. Grow a backyard garden, use a bycicle, avoid purchases at corporate entities, use local merchants if possible. on and on.
When you move to the wilderness or into a patriot group, you become a bigger target. The Enlightened part of disengagement means that you can do no good if your out of action, dead or in a corporate prison. Top priority is to avoid a tighter lock down.
Good luck everyone.
sovereign
Face it - you can protect yourself against other citizens in the
event of a collapse of society. But government forces?
Have you seen the videos of government helicopters picking off "insurgents" (citizens who happen to be holding anything that looks remotely like a gun) in Pakistan?
If the Federal Government wants to kill you, it WILL KILL you, without any fuss or bother - no matter HOW you defend yourself.
Well, I wish them luck...
...but "compounds" built by people who want to escape federal authority don't have a great track record. : (
Kudos to participants
for voluntarily making a public stand against tyranny
I think they tried that in Waco.
.
And again
They will be among the first to be wiped out along with other armed "groups".

Galt's Gulch Chile is being put together by a group that includes libertarian Jeff Berwick.

As a matter of fact, i think DP member 'rembrand' is the managing director of Galts Gulch Chile. Shoot him a message for more info.
Nice Idea
but brings Georgetown to mind. Is it just me that thinks that???????????????
skippy
These guys really need to shut up
about their fortress. I feel like you could build some earth and cinder block berms, call it flood protection and not raise any eyebrows.
Everyone talking about the Branch Davidians is right on. People who make compounds and fortresses and talk about sovereignty tend to get their doors kicked in. Is it surprising that government hacks don't like anti-government hacks?
They could be enormously safer in pitching their city walls as flood protection/sound abatement, setting up a nice "private school" and a "wildlife reserve", keeping their mouths shut and doing what they want.
I agree, you should have 2 years of food supply, a source of fresh water and 10,000 rounds, but as soon as you tell everyone, they've lost 95% of their value.

Remember the "Idaho"!
If they are martyred for their freedom it will spell a quicker end for tyranny.

Groups can create a community and call it a "co-op" instead of a "defensive" community. It's all in the name. Same thing, though--each allow the right to discriminate or kick you out just "because". Where's the safety in that, especially when you've moved your entire life out there and you're subject to who "runs" the place. Which is another question... Where are the "faces" of the creators of this place? You have to provide your personal information, but where is "their" info? And their website says they are receiving donations from people who have "no intention of living there." What?? Who is investing in this place? Who do they REALLY want to attract? The place will be mainly supported by a firearms manufacturer which will provide jobs... Okay. What about farming, livestock, and sustainable means of employment? I am sure this place will attract a ton of fearful folks who feel they have to "go" somewhere. I say get to know your current neighbors, talk about a "neighborhood safety plan", and share the bounty of your gardens. The PTB will just as easily take out a fortress as they will a neighborhood (remember those pesky drones?), but at least you will be in familiar surroundings among the people you love, without fear of being left homeless... I wish them well, too.

My first thought exactly
I wish them luck.
Good for them
It sounds a bit utopic and communal to me, but if they can make it work that is great. I would love to see updates in a few years from now.
A little too close to others for my liking. I would like to live somewhere where I can go days without having to interact with people, but to each their own and good luck to them.

the rules seem kinda stiff...all members of the family 13 and over must meet the marksmanship standards? My sons, no problem. My daughter? We'd be expelled.

Sounds like the perfect excuse to have a federal raid.
Get people together in one place, call it a compound or fortress...
Haven't we heard this before... Waco, Ruby Ridge, Warren Jeffs.
It doesn't matter if they are breaking the law or not.
They have a compound, a fortress and the feds want to see inside and demonstrate that they do not have to knock first.
.
Pride in American Exceptionalism?
Seems like a rather odd requirement for a libertarian-ish group.
I noticed that requirement
I noticed that requirement too. I agree: odd. That oddity makes me wonder where Glenn Beck is. Behind it? Soon to report this story in a fashion to influence outsiders' perception of the community to undermine the community?
Glenn is a hack and the definition of capitalist, a person who doesn't turn misfortune into fortune but causes misfortune to improve himself (and others), a description not to confuse free marketeer with. Free marketeer: Someone who does for himself and when he transacts, he does it fairly.
School's fine. Just don't let it get in the way of thinking. -Me
For that matter, to also
For that matter, to also influence the perceptions of the insiders, people who live there or have gone though all the steps to live there and are yet to move in.
School's fine. Just don't let it get in the way of thinking. -Me
They are probaly more
They are probaly more conservative, i.e. neocon, then libertarian.
This is great!
I notice a lot of concerns about density; part of it will be allowing people to buy land and a home outside of the walls, with a privacy fence.
I love the idea - it would be similar to mankind's early cities, where the raw materials are obtained outside the walls, and the manufacturing takes place within.
Even better: if this succeeds, there's no way another Waco will happen. There would be so many people within that the Feds won't even THINK about armed assault. At most, they'd enforce an "embargo" of sorts.
Also
on their site, they state that there will be condos within the towers of the walls.
This idea is just getting better and better. This is front-page worthy, IMHO. Didn't someone propose a "Paulville" a while back? Here you go!
I agree with rp4pres, that is
I agree with rp4pres, that is less than an acre per family; that will run them into problems with growing/raising their own food, as well as workshops and such. Also, all of these groups moving out there is a bad idea, the USG will only need to take out Idaho and a few other locations and all of the gung-ho militias will be gone, with the few exception outside of those areas of Idaho and Wisconsin and such; plus most of those western states are owned by the Federal Government. That doesn't sound like such a great idea, but that is up to them.
You make some valid points but it could work
It just needs to be worked out over time. Some of that stuff you're not going to be able to help anyway, no matter where you go. Always government prying. Well hopefully not always.

Off Topic
I really like this article on LibertyChatter.com "Swedish Fire Torch".
I have a smoker and am concerned as to how much wood it requires to cook. I have started to store wood "Swedish Fire Torch" size to conserve wood. Thought you might be interested in this article, and a few others on Liberty Chatter.
Thanks Linda.
I'll check them out. I haven't learned to smoke yet but I am familiar with a Swedish torch, I'm not sure if it's a good idea or not because you need smoke.. How would you keep the torch from increasing to flame?
Edit: I suppose you could place a sheet of metal over the top so it would smolder huh?
I read on how to smoke but have yet to try it.. that and canning.. I know I really need to get some practice in. My rabbits will be ready for harvest in about a month so maybe I'll try some then. :)

Smoking and Canning
I have never smoked meat for preserving - only for cooking. My Grandfather smoked pork in a smoke house, but he used sugar cure with it. My X sugar cured pork without the smoke. My aunt canned beef, back during the depression and through the 50's, before they got electricity. The only meat I have canned is fish. I know of no reason you couldn't can rabbit.
I have canned a mountain of vegetables and fruit. I have used pressure and open kettle, never water boil. A pressure cooker works well on gas - I have had trouble maintaining psi on an electric stove, having to turn the temperature up and down to regulate the psi. Trying to pressure can with a wood stove would be tricky to say the least. The water canner would be the best option for wood, but I would never use it for meat. Open kettle is good for fruit including tomatoes, but not vegetables.
By the way, if you try the pressure cooker, never let the pressure off before the kettle cools and the pressure goes down. When I first started canning I did this and my jars broke, and I had 6 quarts of broken glass and green beans. lol
That brought up an issue I've never thought about
Canning on a wood stove! Ut oh.. I guess I'll need extra propane for steady controlled heat to be able to can off-grid.
Thanks! Now at least, I can figure that important part out.

Fuel
I just mentioned the smoker because it requires so much wood. I wouldn't recommend a smoker for survivor mode. That is why I liked the torch.
What I would really like to have is a rocket stove - no smoke and very little wood. I have ask my son (an engineer) to build one. It would be good for everything, including baking bread, unlike the smoker.
