The Hitler gun control lie
Gun rights activists who cite the dictator as a reason against gun control have their history dangerously wrong
By Alex Seitz-Wald

This week, people were shocked when the Drudge Report posted a giant picture of Hitler over a headline speculating that the White House will proceed with executive orders to limit access to firearms. The proposed orders are exceedingly tame, but Drudge’s reaction is actually a common conservative response to any invocation of gun control.

The NRA, Fox News, Fox News (again), Alex Jones, email chains, Joe “the Plumber” Wurzelbacher, Gun Owners of America, etc., all agree that gun control was critical to Hitler’s rise to power. Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership (“America’s most aggressive defender of firearms ownership”) is built almost exclusively around this notion, popularizing posters of Hitler giving the Nazi salute next to the text: “All in favor of ‘gun control’ raise your right hand.”

In his 1994 book, NRA head Wayne LaPierre dwelled on the Hitler meme at length, writing: “In Germany, Jewish extermination began with the Nazi Weapon Law of 1938, signed by Adolf Hitler.”

And it makes a certain amount of intuitive sense: If you’re going to impose a brutal authoritarian regime on your populace, better to disarm them first so they can’t fight back.

Unfortunately for LaPierre et al., the notion that Hitler confiscated everyone’s guns is mostly bogus. And the ancillary claim that Jews could have stopped the Holocaust with more guns doesn’t make any sense at all if you think about it for more than a minute.

1. It's not a meme, it's historical fact

2. "The law did prohibit Jews and other persecuted classes from owning guns, but this should not be an indictment of gun control in general."

Oh ok. Got ya. Actually, WHAAAAAA?

Can you believe these people? So his point is it's not that Hitler kept the guns from Jews and other minority populations while arming the dominant ethnic populace, it's that oppressed populations wouldn't have used them anyways and even if they had they would have lost?

DOES THIS AUTHOR TOO GET A PEACE PRIZE FOR THIS?

Be brave, be brave, the Myan pilot needs no aeroplane.

probably.

DOES THIS AUTHOR TOO GET A PEACE PRIZE FOR THIS?

So the guns were taken before

So the guns were taken before hitler was elected. That is why he was able to do whatever he wanted. No one could fight back. So I guess you think it is all right for obama to take the guns so that some of our future presidents can become the new hitler.

"The law did prohibit Jews

"The law did prohibit Jews and other persecuted classes from owning guns, but this should not be an indictment of gun control in general. Does the fact that Nazis forced Jews into horrendous ghettos indict urban planning?"

....uh...yes

I am not affiliated with this site at all, but if you get gun controllers to look at it, their two sacrosanct worlds of racism and gun control WILL COLLIDE HEAD ON!!!

Ask them, why would they not allow slaves to carry arms of any kind?

My point in sharing this is not to dwell on racism at all, but to prove the point that gun and arms control is the preferred means of tyrants to making one group of people subservient to another.

Their historical worldview has a very short timeline. They cannot comprehend that the US gov't has historically aided and abetted tyranny on this soil... slavery, American Indian genocide, internment of the Japanese. It's like these things never happened in their minds and had nothing to do with gun control.

EDIT: From what I can gather this site is very politically neutral. This is very important because most liberal internet crusaders will often attempt to smear the author of the article or the person who shares the article, without even looking at the information in the article.

I left some comments

Though there is so many comments already, they will likely get buried. Looks like most of the comments are pro 2nd amendment, though. It's always sad when progressives are reduced to defending Hitler.

You know you're winning when...

the opposition starts taking up for Hitler.

I know!

I thought that the gun laws were already in place before Hitler came to power and then of course he tweeked them even more. So I was confused by this article. That's why I posted it. Not because I'm into taking guns away from people. I just had never seen this being a DailyPaul native and I wanted to hear the rebuttal to this Salon piece because I want to refute it.

Here's another one

By the way.. Do you see any similarities between what's going on here and what went on there?

How about the "need" aspect? That's the drive behind Pier's push.. Nobody NEEEEEDDSSS an AR-15..

Oh Dear God

Those children.

People need to see things like that, once in their life.

When I do look, a sickness comes over me and I remember vividly what I'm fighting for when it comes to ending wars and the tyrannical road we are traveling down.

"The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution are worth defending at all hazards; and it is our duty to defend them against all attacks. We have received them as a fair inheritance from our worthy ancestors: they purchased them for us with toil and danger and expense of treasure and blood, and transmitted them to us with care and diligence. It will bring an everlasting mark of infamy on the present generation, enlightened as it is, if we should suffer them to be wrested from us by violence without a struggle, or be cheated out of them by the artifices of false and designing men."

I have to say this

First, I thought I might throw up, but I did not.

Second, I have never been "for" gun control.
I went from not caring either way for a long time (just was not an issue on my radar).

To about a 2 years ago being against gun control.

And within the past few weeks, (primarily due to this site) being Passionately against gun control. When I become passionate about something it encompasses me.

My sickness when seeing things like that is emotional

mostly.. I get chill-bumps and sort of a mild shiver as if I'm trying to shake off the images in my mind. Then I get angry.

I understand being passionate about something.. I'm that way about Liberty and this movement. Many days I get excited at the prospects and then there are days, such as Obama even thinking he has the authority to take guns from people that set me off.

Who wouldn't be mad that that..

Glad to see you get on-board with 2nd Amendment now. It's very important issue.

I had the same feeling from that video

As I did from reading about the female in India that was literally raped to death in December. Then the chicks there asked for guns so they could not be afraid anymore, and they were told they have to be in clear and present danger to have guns. I thought.... aren't they in clear and present danger simply by being females there? Those articles also brought me close to throwing up.

All of this is why sometimes I just want to be in a place of complete peace and quiet far away from the rest of the world, but I guess ignoring the realities of life is not a good way of handling things either.

Either way... I am convincing with the liberals, and this is my new talking point.

Keep at them!

"All of this is why sometimes I just want to be in a place of complete peace and quiet far away from the rest of the world, but I guess ignoring the realities of life is not a good way of handling things either."

I can understand that but you're not necessarily ignoring anything as much as maybe removing yourself out of the danger and mess. I think society will completely breakdown when the economy gets to a certain point.. so thinking about things like that is smart. People who are not preparing are the ones who are ignoring things.

Liberals lie.. they care little for truths and only care what

it can do for them.. "Will it work?" That's about all they worry about.

Take Piers and the lie on OK's numbers.. Has he checked it to see if Pratt was correct? Have you EVER heard a liberal talking head say "Sorry, my numbers were incorrect." Nope.. they just move onto the next lie.

Before you say.. "The repubes do it too!" The repubes are liberals.

I'm well aware the Republicans and Democrats are the same

I was more interested in hearing more about the Hitler facts thing.

I got this from someone today

I'm not the most vocal about gun stuff. In fact I try not to engage people about it at all. But I was surprised by this when I read it. I know that there are a lot of people who know much more about gun history than I here at the DP so I thought I'd post it.
