AMERICA IS DONE THE SCHOOLS SUCK
my wife works for the local high school as a para. today the history teacher put up a picture of ben bernanke the jerkoff and proceeded to tell the children do you know who this man is? this is the wonderful man thats gonna help your families with foreclosures and help people keep their homes! then proceeded to explain how woodrow wilson and roosevelt where her favorite presidents and how they did great things for the people. MAKES YOU WANT TO FREAKING PUKE. HOLLY SHIT THANK GOD I EDUCATE MY SON SO HE KNOW THE STUFF THEY TEACH AT THE HIGH SCHOOL IS FOR THE MOST PART BULLSHIT.
WE DONE HAVE A PRAYER. I CANT BELEIVE THESE PEOPLE ARE QUALIFIED TO TEACH. MY WIFE ASK HER WHY NO MENTION OF TAFT? MY WIFE SAYS HER JAW ALMOST HIT THE FLOOR WHEN SHE MENTION TAFT. SHE TOLD MY WIFE WE CANT TALK ABOUT HIM.

Why End the Dept of Education?
I never understood why Ron Paul took a stance against the Dept of Education. I grew up in the system, i turned out ok... I think.
I had no idea how bad it really was.

LOL yes, some of us
did turn out ok! I agree that folks should take a look at the link you posted. It's GREAT!!
Neutral, at best
I got all the way through high school without the Department of Education even existing. Public schools then were at least as good as they are now, and probably better. So the best I could say about the DoE is that it *might* not have made things worse, but it for $58 billion a year that's hardly a justification for keeping it.
Gatto is great!
John Taylor Gatto is one of my educational heroes. I've sponsored him at events throughout the country and visited him in NYC. Simply put, "schools teach you what to think, not how to think".
My two children homeschooled for high school then chose not to go to college. One is a police officer. Ther other is Senior Vice President of a multi-million dollar company in the film industry. Their curiculum was "interest based and self-directed". No textbooks, no tests, extensive travel, much reading from real books (not dumbed down textbooks) and "just doing stuff" in the real world, not the artificially contrived world inside a school building. (When was the last time you raised your hand to talk or to go to the bathroom!)
We must break the hold that liberal/socialist compulsory government schools have on our children if we hope to regain the country our founders gave to us.
"What have you done for Ron Paul today"?
Centrally planned and focus group accepted
This is complete nonsense...to think that all children must be taught a single view of history and everyone must adhere to our nationally decided societal rules.
It's a fantasy world they're living in. I live in a county where you can't buy alcohol, but I can buy a gun with a little cash and nothing else. Some people live in areas where homosexuals are frowned upon, some live in areas where they're the majority. Don't we have the right to be different? The most offensive thing that describes this country is "melting pot". Let my local school board teach their version, and let another teach their version.
But please, stop lying to our children. The great depression was not solved because of government intervention...it was solved when the government threw up their hands and said..."we don't know what to do next". They did nothing, and we recovered. George Washington never chopped down a cherry tree, don't we all know that? Teach our children the facts about history, let parents decide the morality.
It's enough to make me puke. "No child left behind" is just another way of saying all the kids in this class will be as dumb as the lowest common denominator. If one kid fails we all fail together...because that's what living in a socialist democracy is all about.
RIP Department of Education, and maybe we won't have Department of Moral Maintanance, Department of Language, Department of Economic Planning, Department of Opporitunity Equalization...I could go on forever.
Suggest 5 chairs to be removed from the president's cabinet...seriously, suggest 5 chairs that don't need to be at the table. See how easy it is?

Failure of our Educational System
I think you have to look at the outcome of our educational system to see if it has failed or not.
People have signed up for adjustable loans and didn't know it. They should be able to do the math and figure out if they can afford their home or whatever else they want to buy, but they can't.
Most people want more social programs. They should know that we can't afford to give people what has already been promised through social security and medicare, but they don't. Here is Glen Beck with David Walker, head of the Government Accountability Office, talking about it.

Many companies are having trouble filling the more technical, higher paying positions. There are not enough qualified applicants. We have to bring in people from other countries to do the job. Why can't we fill these positions with our own people?
Some states have lowered the threshold on the standard tests. It makes it look like progress is being made. Then I've seen them actually brag about how many more people are passing. They have no idea if things have improved or not. It's a bunch of BS.
I'm not going to say every public school and teacher is awful. I don't believe that. There are excellent public schools and teachers. The problem is that you have to search long and hard to find them.
I don't think homeschooling is entirely good either.
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of parents who are good home school teachers. But my impression is that many homeschoolers produce equally close-minded and indoctrinated student/children as the government schooled and private schooled children. Bear with me for a sec. I find that many people choose to home school their children because the alternatives do not sufficiently expose children to the area of study that the parents prefer. I'm guessing that mainly, it is religious study. Also, that the teachers don't pay adequate attention to your child to make sure he/she develops the skills your child deserves. Feel free to disagree with me, cause as usual, I'm speaking generally. I come from an area where there were lots of home schooled children and they were completely indoctrinated as well, just to the preference of the parent. You might be saying to yourself, "Well I'd rather have the choice about what my kid learns than hand it over to the government and liberal teachers." Ok. Fine. But what is generally lacking is the teaching of real ability to think critically. Gov'ment schooling teaches kids to be idealistic liberals because teachers are idealistic liberals. Why else would someone accept such crappy pay? Homeschoolers don't necessarily give their children the proper social exposure they need to deal with their peers effectively and often are on the opposite side of the same indoctrination scale. Imagine a kid going into public high school for the first time with no friends and wearing slacks, a white shirt, and a tie then proceeding to make it perfectly clear to the biology teacher in the middle of class that evolution is just a theory? I've seen it.
I think a mix is good. Proper social exposure whilst paying very close attention to what your kid learns in school. It isn't one or the other. Teach your kid how to research and think critically. Teach him how to argue both sides of a point and make up his own mind. Pay close attention to where your kid is in relative to the other kids and move him into the most advanced classes your child can handle. The teaching is much better in the advanced classes, trust me.
I pulled my child out of public schools
because she wasn't learning! (they were too busy making her say the pledge in Spanish and waving Chinese flags in the hallways!) The math programs they used were "fuzzy math" programs like Trailblazers and Everyday Math. They also had this program where you take spelling tests and try to spell the word by sounding them out. There were no right or wrong answers! It was called Brave Spelling and if she got it wrong, they said, "that was great, you tried and that is good enough for us!" without ever giving her the right way to spell it! Every time I went up to school to volunteer, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone! It ended up being so negative, that I eventually pulled her out! I am not religious and do not teach religion at home, but I do instill morals! As for socialization, she takes 2 ballet classes, 1 tap class, guitar and piano lessons each week with children her own age! I do the best I can which is far superior to what the public schools can provide for her!
Solid skills with good socialization,
sounds like a win to me. I didn't say Homeschooling was a bad thing. I just said that sometimes it isn't good.
?
"I'm guessing that mainly, it is religious study."
I agree with one thing: that you are guessing.

for even suggesting that view of homeschooling.
evolution just a theory?
There are still Tons of people on this earth that still actually believe that! To have real" diversity" seems you'd have to discuss the "theory" of creation as well. That's not done in public schools. As a matter of fact it is quashed by the excuse of separation of church and state. Poor kid in the white shirt and tie would probably ridiculed because he is a virgin too! Kids have a tough time these days because their peers have too much influence and the culture is on the road to complete self destruct!
" Critical thinking means not only learning how to think for oneself, but it also means learning how to subvert the traditional values in your society. You're not thinking "critically" if you're accepting the values that mommy and daddy taught you. That's not "critical." This was the quote from Raymond English, VP of the Ethics and Public Policy center in 1987 to the National Advisory Council on Education Ressearch and Improvement reguarding the psychological strategies of critical thinking and values clarification.
The ridicule is my point.
My point about the kid wasn't about the theory of evolution, it's that Homeschooled kids often lack the social skills to deal with other kids, which sometimes leads to ridicule, depression, prolonged virginity... ect.
What the heck is
prolonged virginity, LOL!! Never heard that termonology before. If planned parenthood , and the UN's Rights of the Child have their way, we would all be active by 6yrs. or younger . We as christians know we are to be hated and ridiculed just as he was. Also, some of us believe that we are to "come out of her." Some take that more literally than others. I think the Amish have a true grasp on the concept.
Oh come on now, you know what prolonged virginity means =)
I tend not freak out these things. I think that kids who engage in risky sexual activity at an abnormally young age do so because they are stupid. The smarter ones either obstain longer or use the proper protection to reduce the risk of completely screwing up their lives. Notice the smarter well rounded kids don't get knocked up as often and are more likely to go to college and do well? I don't blame Planned Parenthood, the UN, or the liberals for it. I blame the parents for not getting more involved with their kids to make sure they are well rounded critical thinkers who can make responsible decisions. We should send our kids into the world capable.
We as Christians shouldn't take the position that we know we are to be hated. We should peacefully and kindly reach out to our fellow man in a constructive manner. Like the good Dr. does. What drew me hear was not just the message (although at was the biggest part) but also the peaceful, kind (for the most part), and highly intellegent constituancy that posts here. With that kind of attitude we'll be less hated, less ridiculed, and less likely to suffer from prolonged virginity.
COOL... We do agree
I just couldn't help laughing at the Prolonged Virginity thing, like as a society we have a time table preset that had to be met or we'd just be doomed ...LOL ;)
As a homeschooling father, I
As a homeschooling father, I must agree with many of the comments so far. We have got to get away from government indoctrination in education, and get back to educating our own children. Google John Taylor Gatto. He was the Teacher of the Year in NYC, yet totally stood against the system.

...so they don't get brainwashed!
All government schooling should be ended immediately. It is the parents' responsibility to educate their children, NOT the governments'.

Maybe I'm singing to the choir, but my 7 year old can tell the difference between commodity money, receipt money, and fiat money. We have a really good homeschool group here, and they do quite a bit together,so they do get socialization. We parents get to screen the children they spend the most time with -children who are raised with many of our same values. Content of character is much more important than any thing that might divide us.

John Dewy ? UGH
1905: The Carneige Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching (CFAT) was founded. Together with other Carnegie organizations, it has been a major promoter and funder of SOCIALISTIC, GLOBAL education projects.
1919: The Institute of International Education was established with a grant from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. Edward Murrow became the IIE's Assistant Director and John Dewey served on it's National Advisory Council.
1933: John Dewey "father of progressive education" and honorary president of the National Education Association(NEA), coauthored the Humanist Manifesto 1.
1948: The NEA, funded in part by the Carnegie Corporation, produced a set of international guidelines called Education for International Understanding in American Schools. It included this statement:
The idea has become established that the preservation of international peace and order may require that FORCE BE USED to compel a nation to conduct it's affairs within the framework of an established world system. The most modern expression of this doctrine of COLLECTIVE SECURITY is the UNITED NATIONS CHARTER.
So much for Dewey .
I for one want nothing to do with the UN and it's global agenda. As you can see the UN is the facilitator for these goals that the NEA is pushing.
They are about OBE out come based education.
So much for Dewey?
there's a big difference between what John Dewey wrote and what was accomplished by using a beauracracy "in his name."
i.e. as an independent learner, I'm thankful for John Dewey's book "The Philosophy of John Dewey" and, like the US constitution, enlightened writing doesn't always produce the desired results!
In general, I'd never argue that "Dewey based Curriculums" work since I tried to use one as a student teacher;
My assessment was that students were still being led through "their work" by their teachers;
in my opinion, as long as "tests" are used to verify learning, intellectual diversity will lose out to intellectual uniformity and that will hurt this nation since I believe that defending "the melting pot" is much more important than collecting eugenic metrics like test scores and DNA screens.
I like the constitution too.
But as I see it, his writings may have been quiet eloquent , but he (Dewey) himself helped initiate the "standards" for GLOBAL education.
Not to mention that he coauthored the Humanist Manifesto 1 which in it's self is a religion that puts man kind as his own god. He,( Dewey) did not like that kids entered school with preset morals (religion) that could inhibit their "enlightenment". That to me is called Secular Humanism.
If these princples continue to be implimented in schools, it will have the desired results. Global citizens. Your over all assessement is correct, in that testing is not an indicator of anything except desired out come.
Dewey father of global education
Typo Dewy .... Dewey ;)
