NRA pushing to "keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill"

The NRA has been co-opted by gun control advocates. First, the NRA was pushing for a TSA style agency to condition acceptance of the police state by children attending government schools. Now, the NRA is pushing to give the Central Government the power to label those that they disagree with as "mentally ill" in order to disarm them.

A recent article published at xfinity.comcast.net says:

The NRA, instead, is pushing for measures that would keep guns out of the hands of the mentally ill, until a person gets better.

I imagine "getting better" involves pledging support to a tyrannical State that is trying to void Americans' - inalienable - 2nd Amendment rights.

Here's the full article: http://xfinity.comcast.net/articles/news-general/20130113/US...

What will be the definition of "mentally ill"? "Extremely" religious? Regularly opposes authority? Depressed? Overly anxious? Too outspoken? Veterans that suffer from PTSD?

I say to hell with the NRA. I suggest those that truly want to support the 2nd Amendment withdraw their participation from the NRA and join the GOA. Use your free market vote to punish the NRA.

NRA is not your friend

The NRA is co-opted.
Their positions have become mentally ill.

This position will ensure the Sovietization of mental health care, and that the US would declare anyone disagreeing with it mentally ill, with the goal of forceably medicating them.

“ANARCHY is the radical notion that other people are not your property.” ~Lysander Spooner

Lets keep our children "Safe"

I can't believe no one is offering this solution. They obviously don't care about children.

Where is the "Safe" lobby?

And every normal human emotion is now a mental illness

I would like to point out that many women who have been victims of violent crime and been diagnosed with PTSD find that learning to use and carry a weapon is a huge part of their recovery.
It is one thing to say people with DEBILITATING mental illness shou8uld not have weapons, it is a very different thing to say anyone with any history of mental illness needs disarmed.
GRIEF is now a mental illness, you know. Disarming those who feel grief and allowing those with no empathy to remain armed is STUPID.

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

The Soviet Union was infamous

The Soviet Union was infamous for using 'mental illness' to get rid of anyone opposing it or even slight criticism. The whole psychology field is suspect in my opinion, and appears to be mostly BS against the individual.

In the case of gun control, 'mental illness' could be determined to include depression and since everyone gets depressed or has grief at some point in their life, everyone is at risk of the designation. Ability to meet the requirements could be very rare as everyone is herded into the mental illness status.

That's what I was saying in my comment below.

The gov always goes to the extreme...

...when labeling people. Someone with a plastic butter knife is a terrorist and someone who sees a marriage counselor will be considered mentally ill. This is how they do things. Seriously, most of them should be on the mentally ill list. So if you really want to make things worse, people who do need help and guidance when they are going through difficult things won't go for the help because of this. They always make everything worse. I cannot think of one thing they started to control that actually fixed any problems.

Its funny because the newtown

Its funny because the newtown shooter stole his weapons from his mom. Its funny because the Aurora shooting was done specifically chosen at that movie theatre because it was a gun free zone. Its funny because the Oregon mall shooting was stopped by a conceal carry permit holder. Its funny because because the Media fails to mention to mention any of this. When are we going to get serious. This debate is not about gun control, its about outlawing self defense zones.. I.E. "criminals welcome to wreak havoc here with no resistance zones."

Excellent Post -- I agree 100%

Ever since the "Winning Team" seized control of the NRA and purged Neal Knox's group, the NRA has veered way off track. Indeed, there were problems even before Neal was thrown out. I could write a small book detailing some of the damage NRA has done. I agree the organization is co-opted. I believe that is why the Prostitute Press always refers to NRA as "the" gun lobby, implying NRA has some kind of authority to compromise away rights on behalf of all of us.

The single most effective no-compromise pro-Second Amendment national group is Gun Owners of America (GOA).

I quit the NRA many years ago; when they offered free memberships a few years ago, I refused to take one even though it was free.

I'm proud to say I'm a Life Member of Gun Owners of America.

"Hold them for ransom"

I agree with you about the NRA and about the positives of the GOA instead, and plan to do the same thing. But I will not pay for any "Life Membership" anywhere. Instead I will pay every few years that way if said organization becomes compromised (like NRA) you can let your support expire in sort of a 'holding it for ransom'. If they want my money (support), they will have to hold the course. Anything other than that would be unwise and unresposible on my own part. Fool me once...

A life membership

is a donation. Even if you have paid for a life membership, as long as the organization is doing what it is supposed to, most of us continue to contribute. If it goes off into left field, you stop giving. After that, your life membership costs them money because they still mail membership-related materials to you.

I know several NRA Life Members who have refused to send another dime because of the damage they see NRA doing. However, NRA still sends them a magazine, etc.

If you appreciate the work GOA is doing, and you can afford it, I encourage you to get a Life Membership, or at least buy new annual memberships for family and friends.

Here's what really troubles me:

""We know what works and what doesn't work. And we're not willing to compromise on people's rights when there is no evidence that doing so is going to accomplish the purpose," Keene said."

What in the world is that supposed to mean?!? David Keene seems to be insinuating it would be worth compromising on people's rights if there WAS evidence that doing so would accomplish its purpose. Not one mention by Keene recorded in that article references the Constitution. It's because apparently the NRA is perfectly okay with the federal government breaking the Second Amendment in some instances. The NRA is openly suggesting that it might be okay to sacrifice a little freedom to the federal government for a little security.

The NRA definitely needs replacing.

The definition of mentally ill is whatever they need it to be

as you say.

What about the crazy Irishman in Braveheart who just wanted to kill him some British tyrants?

He was a good shot; I'd rather have an off-kiltered patriot armed than these collaborator snitches.

Great advice. I do just that in many areas of my life, including to Alex Jones -- when he shifts his gear into hyperdrive, when Alex Jones turns into Fear Jones. lol.

Shoot! Anyone who would want to own a gun is CRAZY! Them things is dangerous!

"Drapetomania was a supposed mental illness described by American physician Samuel A. Cartwright in 1851 that caused black slaves to flee captivity."

We need to raise awareness

We need to raise awareness about this to our friends in the NRA. NOW...

"No physical quantity explains it's own existence, and no amount of time can consume an infinite series of events to bring you to the present, which means all of these somewhere have to be explained by one self-existent cause which is not physical."

It's obvious that people who believe in liberty

and the constitution are "mentally ill". What else could explain there allegience to a gd piece of paper over 200 years old?

How about...

They push to keep them off the SSRIs?!!!

When Fascism goes to sleep, it checks under the bed for Ron Paul!

"Mentally ill" Winston Smith

"Mentally ill" Winston Smith wasnt allowed to have guns either.

Wayne LaPierre is crazy!

Oops! Sorry, Wayne, I didn't mean to forfeit your right to bear arms! Maybe the Gun Owners of America will help undo all the damage you've accomplished over the years.

They passed HR2640 back in 2007

AND the NRA endorsed it back then also.
People where calling it the Veteran's Disarmament Bill.
Here is a link to the bill.
I'm curious to how much farther this new bill is going to go.

But, who decides who is

mentally ill? By what authority and by what standard?

My thoughts exactly

I always wondered, considering how many "mental illnesses" there are out there, who can possibly own a gun?

2nd amendment is a trap

Looking to the 2nd amendment as your permission slip to own a gun traps you in the Hegelian dialectic and you will lose. Read more here:
You need a better argument based on simple logic. You haven't read this anywhere else.

It's not a permission slip. I was born with the right.
The 2nd is a restriction.

Exactly. You were born with

Exactly. You were born with it. And no person, law or group has any moral or legitimate right to infringe upon it.

Aww common guys, read the link before down voting

I think they misunderstood the point.

combine the last two UPVOTED comments!!!!

Brilliant and obvious....if the NRA wants to continue enjoying their "status" amongst the elite in Washington, and the creature comforts and social life; FUNDS will be directed to the "mental screening program"(as well as gifts transferred to the Executive Branch) effective immediately.

GOA now has a target on their back....sure, we don't burn Christians at the stake anymore, nor will we round them up publicly like Hitler did....but, get the message liberty-lovers and independent-minded self-educated....."you will conform, and be pressed into to public/social mold", or else....

This reinforces my confidence

in having made the right choice of not giving them a penny and instead putting it all to GOA. No doubt left in my mind whatsoever.
