Israel forces Palestinians from 'tent city'

Israeli police backed by bulldozers evicted Palestinian protesters from a hilltop camp they set up in a West Bank area slated for Jewish settlement, witnesses said.

About 200 Palestinian activists set up the camp, named Bab al-Shams (Gate of the Sun in Arabic), on Friday in the controversial E1 area between Israeli annexed east Jerusalem and the illegal settlement of Maaleh Adumim.

The protesters had defied Israeli orders to leave until police moved in at around 2.30 am (00:30 GMT) Sunday.

"Hundreds of Israeli police came from all directions, surrounding all those who were in the tents and arresting them one by one," Palestinian legislator Mustafa Barghouti said.

Al Jazeera's Jane Ferguson reports from Jerusalem.

How can these

Israeli 'settlers' live there in good conscience? I, for one, would be sickened to move on in to my shiny new condo in Maaleh Adumim - a place where hundreds of poor people were swarmed, hurt, and rounded up?

How could you live in a home where your foundation stands on the blood of people, and the rubble of their homes mowed over by bulldozers? A place where the people were sent the bill for their own home's destruction? It's disgusting.

Um,

ever heard of Native Americans?

I mean no disrespect, and I understand your point. I'm just saying, that's kinda how I feel about America.

A two-state solution will never be possible

with the West Bank like it would be possible with Gaza. There are already too many Israelis living in the West Bank who would fight their own government if it tried to evict them, not to mention the fact that such a move would never garner enough political support in Israel Proper. There's only one solution to the bloodshed and terrorism against the West Bankers: a one-state solution. Israel should tell the UN and any other foreign objectors to piss off and they should annex the West Bank and give ALL it's residents Israeli citizenship. A Swiss Canton system would allow the Palestinians to have quite a bit of autonomy in Palestinian-majority areas. Nothing would change culturally for them except they would be treated by the Israeli government the same way Palestinians in Iseael Proper are.
