Senator Wyden: "Mr. Brennan, just when are drones allowed to kill American citizens?"

Senator Asks CIA Nominee When Drones Can Kill Americans
By Spencer Ackerman | Wired

The man in charge of America’s drone wars will face Senate questioning about perhaps their most controversial aspect: when the president can target American citizens for death.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) sent a letter on Monday to John Brennan, the White House’s counterterrorism adviser and nominee to be head of the CIA, asking for an outline of the legal and practical rules that underpin the U.S. government’s targeted killing of American citizens suspected of working with al-Qaida. The Obama administration has repeatedly resisted disclosing any such information about its so-called “disposition matrix” targeting terrorists, especially where it concerns possible American targets. Brennan reportedly oversees that matrix from his White House perch, and would be responsible for its execution at CIA director.

“How much evidence does the President need to determine that a particular American can be lawfully killed?” Wyden, a member of the Senate intelligence committee, asks in the letter, acquired by Danger Room. “Does the President have to provide individual Americans with the opportunity to surrender before killing them?”

Democratic Senator from Oregon

Wyden is a Democratic Senator from my home state of Oregon. We're pretty lucky here that our senators (Wyden & Merkley) sometimes vote on the side of Liberty and against the wars. Not always, but sometimes. I just got an email from Merkley about how he voted against FISA (warrantless electronic spying) along with only 22 other senators. I write and call them both frequently to encourage them to support 'Liberty and Justice' votes, and they are both very responsive and have been (I believe) moving more towards Liberty (perhaps as a result of activism in Oregon?)

Since Oregon will probably never elect a Libertarian Senator, I guess we have to work with what we've got!

Kudos to Senator Wyden...

I'm not typically a fan of his, but am glad he's living up to our supposed independent Oregonian streak on this occasion.

yes Kudos to Wyden

he has really been asking the tough questions of late. I give him credit. Maybe it will make the news and make someone somewhere think.

The DP actually beat Wired reporting on this letter :)

I created a post about this letter yesterday evening, but it didn't get much attention. I'm not complaining (or looking for Kudo's) I just think it's cool how DP'ers are always on top of everything. All anyone needs to do to stay on top of most issues is to browse on over to the DP. Its more likely that the topic you are looking for will be posted twice than it is for it to not already have been reported by one of us.

I sure hope the senator gets his questions answered and isn't required to keep them classifed.

The website was having problems yesterday.

It is only now that I am able to plus/minus anything so maybe others were having problems bumping your post.

So it wasn't just me . . .

you get the first up arrow vote since it started working again.

I used to live in OR for quite some time. Glad to hear of Wyden's actions and that this story is getting out there.

When you mention the need to defend against tyranny, many have the 'it can't happen here' response. Those same people know nothing about the National Defense Authorization Act or proposals to fly drones over our neighborhoods.

Totally agree with you!

It is the best.

And that he doesn't get hit

And that he doesn't get hit by a drone.

While on topic of Drones...

read what the drones overhead do to human psyche:

"Second, US drone strike policies cause considerable and under-accounted-for harm to the daily lives of ordinary civilians, beyond death and physical injury. Drones hover twenty-four hours a day over communities in northwest Pakistan, striking homes, vehicles, and public spaces without warning. Their presence terrorizes men, women, and children, giving rise to anxiety and psychological trauma among civilian communities. Those living under drones have to face the constant worry that a deadly strike may be fired at any moment, and the knowledge that they are powerless to protect themselves. These fears have affected behavior. The US practice of striking one area multiple times, and evidence that it has killed rescuers, makes both community members and humanitarian workers afraid or unwilling to assist injured victims. Some community members shy away from gathering in groups, including important tribal dispute-resolution bodies, out of fear that they may attract the attention of drone operators. Some parents choose to keep their children home, and children injured or traumatized by strikes have dropped out of school. Waziris told our researchers that the strikes have undermined cultural and religious practices related to burial, and made family members afraid to attend funerals. In addition, families who lost loved ones or their homes in drone strikes now struggle to support themselves."

Thank you for posting the drone article . . .

as an ex-conservative, I sometimes visit conservative pro 2nd Amendment websites to get libertarian ideas out there. Many of these people have bought into the neo-con line. "They hate us for our freedoms." and "the War Against Terror".
What lies & excuses will they tell themselves, when drones are spying on them from above - or even 'taking out' their neighbors ?

Tyranny imposed with industrial high tech efficiency and sold with psychologically sophisticated propaganda, has been released on the world - - -

And Brennan basically gets a promotion for his "work" there

And we are supposed to have...what?...30,000 drones overhead by 2020?

Seriously? I have to stop paying attn. Its bad for my blood pressure

Wine may help your blood pressure

Maybe consider drinking some so you can Google "30,000 drones" and see how many results you get...

we don't want our government killing it's citizens....

....that's why we just elected the most pro-baby-killing President in history!!!

Oh sure, we don't like the idea of bloodshed....the execution of someone without the means of dedending himself/herself, especially when it is sanctioned or funded with our tax dollars....murderers!!!

But what about the 53,000,000 killed by surgical abortion? or even the less bloody birth control pill, and day after pill?

Let's prioritize the few dozen who the government might mow down outside the womb because of their political opposition .... Sorry gang, 40 years of Roe v. Wade was PREDICTED to lead to this.....it's called ZERO OPPOSITION to power....either population control, or elimination even of those who slipped the through under the radar and developed a pro-Creator attitude.

isn't abortion the government "lawful killing of Americans"???

TIME Magazine claims that the pro-abortion forces are losing ground, but it's hard to say that is the case after the 2012 elections, the huge increases in abortion via the day-after pill, and the implementation of Obamacare. Kevin Swanson claims that it's a worldview problem that produces so many dead babies and birth-imploding nations."

"National security" will prevent...

"lawfully killed"...great euphemism for murder

So it's not even a matter of IF but WHEN, and Wired is all matter-of-fact about that?

I do not know

Did he vote for patAct, did he vote yeah in the recent senate vote to contnue spying on our communications?

I am leary to call out any of our federal crimanls as a value...

Liberty = Responsibility

you could look it up at votesmart.org

He voted against FISA...everytime I think.
He voted for the Patriot Act initially (2001) but has voted against it since.

Thanx for the link...

"...Third, as you begin your second term as President, we ask you to reiterate your readiness to take military action against Iran if it continues its efforts to acquire a nuclear weapon. In addition we urge you to work with our European and Middle Eastern allies to demonstrate to the Iranians that a credible and capable multilateral coalition exists that would support a military strike if, in the end, this is unfortunately necessary."

Its nice that he has found conscience on civil liberties, although he did in fact help bring us the PatAct, but he is just another empire enabler and quite the spender. The link will be used much thank you again.

Letter quoted above.

Liberty = Responsibility

and what you will find on many is they are good on some issues...and what Ron Paul would do is form coalitions with them on these issues. If you vilify everyone because they don't agree on all the issues you won't get anywhere.

But I also find the site is handy to know when I need to try to get my congress-people to change!

I value this guy. He wanted the intelligence c'ee rept on NDAA

made available to citizens as well.

I'm glad he's on the intelligence committee. No one else on there even seems to blink at this stuff.
