Checks and BalancesSubmitted by Ryan834455 on Thu, 01/17/2013 - 16:51
The United States was created with a system of checks and balances. Those are breaking down. I thought of an idea to build more.
Write a contract between a land owner and the government, agreeing to certain laws for a period of time.
For example. I agree to pay X taxes.
Sell the land, and a person is pricing the land partly based on the tax rate.
Why it will work:
Why do lobbyists control Washington? A few people caring deeply about an issue will have much greater force than many people caring a little. We fight a speeding ticket with more force than we fight against voter fraud. How many of you went to the court and sued for voter fraud?
This creates a scenario in which each person is empowered to care deeply, and the effect has a more immediate impact. If this were in place for a while, and the government had a history of honoring grandfathered contracts, then the houses honored at a lower tax rate would be worth more, and dishonoring it would damage the owner's net worth dramatically, crating highly motivated individuals.
How to implement:
Obviously it would need to be implemented where the government still respects its people. There are places in America like that. Parts of Texas, Iowa, Delaware.
