I offer exuberant applause

Mikado Opera starring Japanese "Lord High Executioner" Ko-Ko

Topsy Turvy: Japanese No! Japanese Yes! 7 minute musical. Excerpt of Mikado Opera. "Lord High Executioner" not shown in this scene.

1885. Gilbert and Sullivan are in rehearsals for the Mikado, when Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) invites four Japanese guests from a traveling exhibit to watch the proceedings.

Mikado Opera staged for the English National Opera, in a British seaside resort of the 1920s. The result, complete with a chorus of gentlemen of Japan as cartoon-like British peers, emphatically underscores the Englishness of the satire.

The show's main star is Eric Idle as Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner (not shown in this film clip).

[This satire make a connection between 1885 Japan & 2013 America. The 1920s theatre set is of "Mikado" Opera. "Obi" is the kimono waistband. "Lord High Executioner" played by Ko-Ko (not shown in this film clip).]
