British troops face fresh charges of Iraq war torture and killings

Britain will face fresh charges of breaching international law over the alleged torture and killing of prisoners during the war in Iraq, which began almost exactly 10 years ago. The allegations will be unveiled in the high court, when Britain will stand accused of a "systemic" policy of abuse committed over five years, from 2003 to 2008.

At a hearing scheduled over three days from 29 January, lawyers for 180 Iraqis who claim they are victims of abuse, or that their family members were unlawfully killed, will place a file of statements before two judges presiding over the court in London accusing British soldiers and intelligence officers of unlawful interrogation practices. These include hooding and the use of "stress positions", sexual abuse, beating and religious abuse of illegally detained prisoners. In some cases, the testimonies allege, the torture led to the death of the prisoner.

The statements were compiled during meetings with victims and relatives, mostly in Lebanon, by human rights lawyer Phil Shiner of the Public Interest Lawyers group, based in Birmingham.

The court will rule on whether the abuses were isolated incidents of which commanders, senior ministry officials and politicians were unaware, as the government insists, or "systemic" and authorised as policy.

...of which commanders, senior ministry officials and politicians were unaware, as the government insists, or "systemic" and authorised as policy.

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that since the courts are part of the government...they might, just maybe...side with the government. I know I'm setting myself up by making such a brazen preditction but I'm a pretty good "guesser".

Tyranny has engulfed the globe. Lawlessness, torture, and mass murder go unpunished. Give up my guns? You have GOT to be kidding!

Polish troops

also face similar charges. Well when gang members are allowed in this is what happens. ie. Standards are lowered to get the numbers. British have executed some of their own high ranking Officers for crimes in the past and I respect them for that.

Bring back discipline from 100 years ago and these problems would be much fewer in number. If you want to be a professional soldier you should be able to withstand the punishment of a professional soldier. The language, music, and morals today in the miltary are very poor. What kind of people will they be when they get off the socialized assistance of the military?

When will America be tried for war crimes?

I am confused as to why this is just UK. Our own government is guilty as well. This makes me sick. I hope there is justice for those poor Iraqi's.

and 2nd Amendment Rights rally sizes are required to make our voices heard and to pressure war crime accountability. Not enough importance has been placed on this and other issues. It is the only way to hold them accountable and raise further awareness to the sleeping masses.

We have the numbers. We just don't utilize it. We have only ourselves to blame.

Btw, aren't you in Ohio? If so, where abouts?

Well we are.

There's been actions against soldiers and USA military contractors. It ain't "just the UK". Never heads far up the food chain though. It's standard procedure to throw a few grunts and low level officers under the bus.

History has a long memory for rapists, torturers and murderers

Agusto Pinochet found out. Oh and in Cheney and a few others show up in some nations like Spain?

Handcuffs, jail cell, international war crimes tribunals.

Well said my friend

Instead of prosecuting criminals the US justice system prosecutes people like Bradley Manning who exposed war crimes.
No wonder whistle-blowers are afraid to come forward.
