Kim Dotcom - Mega is Live! Are you signing up?

Mega is a free service just launched by Kim Dotcom, the creator of Megaupload whose mansion was raided over piracy allegations.

Yesterday he tweeted

"Kim Dotcom ‏@KimDotcom
As of this minute one year ago #Megaupload was destroyed by the US Government. Welcome to https://Mega.co.nz"

The service features 50GB of free completely encrypted and private storage. He explains it pretty well in this interview:

I am signing up.

2048 bit encryption but it logs your IP and you can't upload yet.

So I guess I don't get it

I don't actually get the big deal. We already have encryption. I've been backing up to the Amazon's cloud securely for years. Even if Amazon wanted to look at my files, they're encrypted.

Also, AES-128 is very good. I trust it. However, the NSA can break it.

Are we paying for the privilege of using their hard drives? 50gb for free is very nice. Also, what happens if the government shuts them down again? Do we lose our files?

..another cross-post.

I thought we were not supposed to cross post in comments.

Here is another MEGA link on DailyPaul:
MEGA Keynote: "By using MEGA, you say 'No' to governments that want to spy on you."

It couldn't hurt

to have an encrypted backup location...

I can only imagine the projects that are going to be built on top of this assuming they can handle the demand.
