I'm so tired of hearing propaganda about (insert favorite profession here) being "heroes."

My wife (a doctor herself and some might claim doctors are "heroes") is the one who stated the tagline above today while we were talking. I thought that it is worth posting here. I've actually never heard anyone say "professions do not define 'heroes," but it is certainly true. Being a "hero" means you did something above and beyond your "duty" (usually putting your own life in danger).

Just BEING a soldier, policeman, fireman, doctor, lawyer or deep-sea diver does not make you a hero. That is a distinction that you need to EARN. It does not come with your profession. Hey, how about a little "worship" for all us hard working idiots who PAY for all this? Oh, I forgot... It's our PRIVILEGE to pay half of what we earn so we can have so many "heroes".

It is a subject that is

It is a subject that is understood but hard to express in words. I'm trying to come up with a decent response to it.
