Revolutionary Japan is Suddenly the Centre of World Affairs

So Japan may not slide into genteel oblivion after all. To the surprise of the Japanese people, their country is smack in the middle of two riveting dramas that threaten to upturn the global strategic landscape in short order.

By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard | The Telegraph

Newspapers may soon have to re-open their Tokyo bureaux, shut down long ago when the investment bubble burst and one Lost Decade stretched into another.

We all watch with disbelief as China and Japan rattle sabres over the Senkaku/Diaoyu islands, so like the seemingly minor events that drew Europe's alliance systems into conflict from 1911 onwards.

Both graduated to fighter jets last week: Japan sending in F-15s; China deploying J-10s, and mobilising the East China Sea fleet for live ammo drills.

China's purpose is clear. It is testing the US security umbrella, and Washington's willingness to risk conflict to back Asian allies. There is a minority in Beijing who think America is a busted flush, a mistake made repeatedly by different powers over the last hundred years.

The possibility that the world's three largest economies could come to blows -- as feared by US defense secretary Leon Panetta -- is a sobering thought.

Japan

If I was a Japanese I would be a bit concerned. They are a bit remote out there. At least they do not have too much territory to defend. They can concentrate lots of firepower within a smaller area ie short supply lines. I wish them well.

Looking forward to seeing the reports. All foreign troops should leave Japan. The initial surge will not be too pretty for Japan imo.

Cheers,

donvino

i think there's a slightly off brand of libertarianism rising in

japan.. not sure if michael can confirm this.. i think they are basically pro-domestic free market but wants government to basically cut off all foreign influence on the domestic market.. it's kinda like closing the door to global trade but they want a free domestic economy

That's what isolationism

That's what isolationism really means

For centuries Japan closed most ports of entry to foreign trade.

This is common for island nations.

Benjamin Fulford knows his stuff re: JAPAN

In his update this week, he writes:

"What is really going is a land grab in the Sahara aimed at getting Western control of newly discovered deposits of oil, uranium, gold and other resources in the vast but largely empty Sahara. This land grab may also be aimed at grabbing what will become choice real estate if suppressed energy technology is used to start massive sea-water desalination projects aimed at turning the deserts green.

At the same time, the Western powers are doing their utmost to distract Asia from this by stoking jingoistic feelings over some tiny Islands. Those tiny islands are nothing more than a worm on a hook and the new Chinese regime seems to be falling for this scam hook, line and sinker."

if we do go to war with china

our government should not drop bombs but guns and ammo, and pamphlets about how they want to give china a free government. Pretty much the only people in china with power are the communist party and they only make 3% of the population so if you want to destabilize china simply send lots of fully automatic weapons there and let the people know you want peace. Seriously this threat alone will keep china out of our backyard.

Drop Pamphlets, but with pictures of hot American Women

With Chinas one child policy the vast majority of the babies born are male. Then just let nature take its course! LOL

I dont know

I think that would give them a reason to go to war. I think one bachlore is a in need of a matchmaker, but I worry a 100 million is in need of a war.

bump

for peace.

Japan is building aircraft carriers again...

...for the first time since World War II and China's now got one too and probably has two new ones under construction. Japan says they are for defense and only carry helicopters but all flattops worldwide can carry vertical take-off jets like the Harrier of the new F-35B.

How useful are aircraft

How useful are aircraft carriers? Planes can refuel in mid-air and there is a lot of technology that would make such a carrier not that useful. Don't know for sure so any assesments are welcome?

Chariot. Tank. Battleship. Aircraft Carrier? Fighting prior war?

Generals plan war based on their experience... frozen in their memory.

Troops die for it.

Which General is Planning this One?

Do you consider the information reliable? It speaks of a purge of sorts...and the kind of "Troops [willing to] die for it" on both sides?

So confusing. I don't know. Not who. Not why.

Study of history shows that folks speaking the same language tend to communicate better amongst themselves. This is obvious. In the fog of war, folks speaking the same language tend to target those that do not.

I am not trying to provoke any fighting. Just mentioning history.

Even what is called "Civil War" is rarely so. To wit, our revolution in 1776 was British vs British. American (the ones seeing their parioitic duty as fight off the British Army & Navy where theselves mostly British. The British regular Army & Navy were hard pressed to shoot other British subjects (American or elsewhere). Not popular as all. King George hired the Hessian Army, a professional army out of Southern Germany. "The Hessians are coming!"

In the US Civil, foreign military was ever present.

Also note the adventures of the French Foreign Legion & other mercenary armies. The tended to battle against those that spoke other languages.

War! Man is the only animal that deals in that atrocity of atrocities, War. He is the only one that gathers his brethren about him and goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his kind. He is the only animal that for sordid wages will march out...and help to slaughter strangers of his own species who have done him no harm and with whom he has no quarrel. ..And in the intervals between campaigns he washes the blood off his hands and works for "the universal brotherhood of man"--with his mouth. - What Is Man? by Mark Twain

All war must be just the killing of strangers against whom you feel no personal animosity; strangers whom, in other circumstances, you would help if you found them in trouble, and who would help you if you needed it. - "The Private History of the Campaign That Failed" bu Mark Twain

Sorry I could not be more specific. We are now at war with so many countries, I loss track of who we are told are our enemies. And why?

Quite gererally speaking.

Whatever border or turf. Prior to a scuffle.

Mark Twain is a bit off here

I don't think Mark Twain quite new what he was talking about. I'm not any sort of animal expert, but I've seen programs of prides of loins fighting. I've seen programs on ant colonies killing each other. I'd wager there are more examples with insects, birds, perhaps carnivorous fish or dolphin pods.

As an aircraft carrier...

...they carry strike fighters and reconnaissance planes whose range would be fairly short relative to bombers. In that capacity, in-flight refueling is not used to lengthen range so much as it to keep planes over the area of operation longer. In a war with the U.S., enemy carriers would be incinerated as soon as possible, but in a war that is limited to China and Japan or China and India (who is also building them), they can play a very important role in raiding commerce, attacking coastal bases, suppressing enemy air attacks, hunting submarines, and destroying an opposing fleet on the high seas. When used as a helicopter carrier, they are able to land thousands of marines on enemy beaches very rapidly and they also hunt for submarines. Their biggest drawbacks are their cost and their vulnerability.

Cuimhnigh orm, a Dhia, le haghaidh maith.

Very useful. Most fighter

Very useful. Most fighter jets have a flight time a little over 2,000 miles. So having mobile airfields are extremely critical to achieving modern military success.

Good question

In a real war, probably not that usefull, but to project power against a third world country or to maintain open sea ways, very usefull.
