Youtube Wanting My Name

Starting just now every time I try to post a comment on youtube it tells me to change my username to my real name and won't let me out of the popup. There is an option to put in my name but no button to make it take. And if I opt out it gives me an error message. Anyone else having that problem? I am suspicious of this since google took over youtube.

I Still Can't Post

I keep getting that hateful popup and there is no way to get out except close the whole page. I have tried everything. I even tried to send feedback to google to tell them to back off but that won't go through either. I have been pretty much shut out of youtube for commenting. I am thinking of closing my account but that may be just what they want us to do. Give up and quit.

Google / YouTube is going the

Google / YouTube is going the route of Facebook, but all pressures for full-disclosure can be defeated simply by feeding the system with misinformation at every step. You are not under oath when you use these free services.

just click the

remind me later

link or whatever small "exit" link they have on there.

it also asks if you want to use just ONE name as in your youtube nickname OR your google name.

you still have options but it won't be for long

soon the internet will NOT be free and definitely not a place for me

There Isn't a Remind me Later Option

The only option is to fill in my name or say I don't want to. I tried typing in a fake name and it gave me an error message. I tried opting out and got the same message. I have to close the whole page to get out.

There isn't an exit button

the only button is to say no and when I click that it gives me an error message. The only way out is to close the whole page.

You Are Not Alone

Yeah, they tried REAL hard to get mine, 'course I resisted...Of Course!
Michael Nystrom knows who we are, and while many post their (supposedly) "real" names here on the DP...including me.....it came down to this:
"Their REPEATED REQUESTS kinda Freaked ME OUT"!

.... I'm GLAD I said NO!.....and will KEEP SAYIN' IT!..quite possibly it's one of the last places we can say NO!

...BECAUSE: "they" are conditioning EVERYONE to say YES......while
"The Powers That Be"....have been telling US:
((((((((((((((((((((((NO!!!))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

...we will see who has the power...

I've been able to opt out the couple times this has come up, but YouTube/Google is pretty persistent about it. Rather ominous if you ask me.

I got that a few times, but

I got that a few times, but haven't seen it in a while.

My name is Ron Paulfan. It's as simple as that.

Prove to me otherwise that it is not....

That happened to me 4-6 months ago too.

I tried putting in another name and it wouldn't accept it! I realized it wasn't asking me my name--it was asking me to VERIFY my identity!!!

I closed the window. I kept going back until it stopped asking me. Actually, I remember it eventually asked me why I wouldn't put my name and it gave me numerous choices:
1. Using LLC Coporation name instead
2. Don't want to interfere with original channel name
3. ? I forget
4. ? I forget

I don't remember which choice I went with but I do remember that I NEVER supplied them with my name : )

Well, Youtube has been operated by Google for a good while now

Well, Youtube has been operated by Google for a good while, now.

And they're generalizing the tediousness of their fantabulous platform across the board of apps and features now. YT included, evidently.

I agree. Super annoying. Forceful.

I actually had to change my name in the Gmail account I'd use. If only to just appear as "Cyril J" to comment here or there on people's channels. They want to display what else to the entire online universe? How much I size in my shoes? Or the color and motifs of my underwears?

Not that I want to hide from them (I know they can know pretty much anything they want if just dear gov't asks or suggests them), but I didn't want random people to see my last name.

I decide where and when my full name appears. Like, proudly, on here, the Daily Paul. I DO want dear gov't to know WHO I AM ON HERE. Elsewhere? To MY discretion, thanks.

So, Youtube and their IDIOTIC privacy policy and features update... Forceful. Tedious. I totally confirm. I didn't have much high hopes re: Google past 2006 or so, but I wasn't expecting them becoming so forceful, indelicate.

Just like I did with Facebook, I might as well drop them altogether eventually.

Bear.

Not doing it.

It's happened to me like three times now. They want you to give them your real name, and they want you to like any other emails with yahoo address you might have. Not doing it.

Welcome to the slippery slope

Welcome to the slippery slope of personal information.
I abandoned my Youtube account when they started requiring a gmail or google account to be linked.

Get out now.

Southern Agrarian

It did this to me...

several times on the same account. One way to temporarily get around it is to just reload the page.

They make it very difficult and tricky to find the way to opt out but it's there. After the sixth or seventh time of being presented with the popup on different occasions, I finally figured out how to permanently say "no" but I don't remember how the dialogue went well enough to give instructions.

It WILL let you permanently opt out of "using your real name". Just have to keep hacking at it...

You can't give it a fake name

Because they already know your name!

"We see you're posting as xxxxxxx. Mind if we change your username to Michael Nystrom?"

Yeah That Was My Thought

so what is up with it?

Michael Nystrom's picture

What's up with it is they want to eat you

They want to track you.

That is where the money is. Tracking you and feeding you what you want before you even know what you want. I have Google Now on my smartphone, and it tells me how long it will take me to get home; what traffic conditions are like; what the score of the Celtics game is. Other crap that I don't even know.

The other day I was looking for an address. I typed in the first 3 numbers. Just numbers, mind you. And it came up with the exact street and city. It was freaky. Like it actually read my mind.

Anyway, that is what they want. They want to track you so they can know you, and know you so they can sell you. Both sell stuff to you, and sell your data to others.

Did you ever see Minority Report? See that, and more.

That is Real Creepy

Have you seen all the cameras on top of the traffic lights lately? Even in rural towns! I heard they are putting them there to track us everywhere we go so they can study our habits and market accordingly. CREEPY

Try this alternative to Google

www.duckduckgo.com

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and have a look at their privacy policy.

Doesn't have the features Google has, but it is a pretty good search engine.

You need to use startpage.

You need to use startpage. Though I'm not sure it can be used on a smartphone, though I have a hard time believing that they wouldn't put it out on a smart phone.

I was paranoid about this the other day

I was saying stuff out loud while watching tv and then it showed up in search. Phones and ipads have cameras and mics.

I was freaked out, so I did a test. I kept saying out loud how badly I wanted Italian food.

Turns out, nothing happened, no Italian food ads. It was just a coincidence earlier.

But don't be surprised....

Michael Nystrom's picture

Yeah, they want my name too

From a business perspective, they feel the need to compete with Facebook, which has your "real" name, your "real" friends, the places you're "really" going and checking in, etc.

Marketers feel like that is much more valuable information than a bunch of anonymous screen names. That way they can target you better for ads.

YouTube is one of Google's properties, and they're trying to integrate it with Google+, the social network they created to compete with Facebook that nobody uses.

I read all about it ... somewhere. Can't remember where.

But Google+ as a social network... doesn't really work. I don't really understand it. But then again, I'm probably too old.
