Police accompanying crews to install smart meters at homes, 2 arrested

Two vocal opponents of Naperville’s initiative to install wireless electric meters on homes were arrested after interfering with the installation process, according to city officials.

Police are accompanying crews this week as they install smart meters at homes that previously sent away installers.

“The previous installation attempts were met with some resistance and we wanted to ensure our employees’ safety,” City Manager Doug Krieger said.

Naperville has installed smart meters on 57,000 homes and is about 99 percent through with the process. Officials have said the project will make the electric system more reliable and efficient and reduce costs.

However, the Naperville Smart Meter Awareness group has expressed concerns over whether the wireless meters will affect health, security and privacy. The group has a federal lawsuit pending against the city.

The two women arrested Wednesday are leaders of the group.

Malia "Kim" Bendis of the 2200 block of Mercer Court was charged with two misdemeanors — attempted eavesdropping and resisting a peace officer.

Jennifer Stahl of the 1400 block of Westglen Drive, received two ordinance violation citations — interfering with a police officer and preventing access to customer premises.

does anyone have a link to info, facts not conjecture, that these meters are really anti-liberty and/or a danger to one's health?

.

I had a SM installed 4 months ago and found out my space heater takes an ABSURD amt of electricity.
I can view my usage and tell when Im wasting, and can view it at 15 min intervals. I know what a light costs to turn on, a blow dryer and even a refirge simply by turning them off- waiting a few mins and turning them back on, then looking at the usage pattern on the SM website.
It will give me my usage, at what time of day, and lets me compare so I can save money.
They also have smart appliances that connect with the smart meter and they can turn themselves off when too much(i decide) is used.
the website allows you to go back and you can view up to 13 months in the past so I can look at last years AC usage and compare to this year and possibly cut down- and when to cut down.
SM can be an important tool if used right and the guessing is taken out of how much something costs to run.
I like determining if I want my dustbuster plugged in 24/7 for a once a month 3 second use.. same with the microwave.
It stays plugged in 24/7 but I never use it and costs $4 a month just to have plugged in. so I plugged it in to a multi plug that has a switch and the dustbuster also and keep it off and turn it on when I need one or the other- which is almost never.
I also run a fan in bedroom at night to sleep. I used to turn the fan to high, but by turning it to medium- It saves $7 a month.
Its paying for itself because my electric provider only charges me $1.90 a month for the SM and has saved me $24 so far.
I also unplugged my tv which i never use. It is a big screen and draws electricity if it is plugged in. I never use it so i unplugged it and also turned my refrigerator down a notch.
My bill is the lowest it has ever been ($38) and December was the coldest month on record since 1917 in Galveston.
I turn on the gas oven if I need heat.
I know it sounds ghetto but in SE Texas we use the heaters very little except last month it was COLD!
cant wait to see how I can save with my AC in summer. Havent had smart meter for AC yet but it will save me a hundred at least by the end of the summer coming up.

so how much do you save..

if you turn the SM off when not using?

.

about 25%.
But we are in winter and my bills are low anyway, tight now.
It will be the summer that is the real test and I think it will be around 35%. $100 electric bill will go to $65, if I do it right.

SM show you where you spend electricity. By knowing the times of day when Im in peak- I can turn things off.
Things I wrote above that no one thinks about.

Night lights that stay on all day. dustbusters are plugged in and rarely used.
refrige can be turned down a notch or two.
ceilings fans that run constantly even when Im not home.

I turned them all off. I took bulbs out of my ceiling fans and now just have one when I turn on an overhead light. (I mostly use lamps anyway, but why have 3 bulbs for a ceiling fan??)
The biggest thing was my electric space heater.
It doubled my electric usage everyday. I turned it off

Anyone can buy a unit that logs appliance usage. Once one checks the freezer, the refrigerator, microwave, space heater, well pump, etc. All that is needed is an annul retest to make sure it hasn't broken or worn out.

A whole house unit it a waste of money and the potential for privacy leakage is too high.

Free includes debt-free!

so would my neighbors- if they care.
