Milwaukee County Sheriff: "Residents Should Arm Themselves"

Milwaukee County Sheriff David A. Clarke Jr. set off alarm bells Friday with a radio spot some view as a call for citizens to arm themselves.

In the radio ad, Clarke tells residents personal safety isn't a spectator sport anymore, and that "I need you in the game."

"With officers laid off and furloughed, simply calling 911 and waiting is no longer your best option," Clarke intones.

"You could beg for mercy from a violent criminal, hide under the bed, or you can fight back."

Clarke urges listeners to take a firearm safety course and handle a firearm "so you can defend yourself until we get there."

"You have a duty to protect yourself and your family. We're partners now. Can I count on you?"

The spot aired at least once - during the last hour of the Mark Belling show on WISN-AM (1130) on Thursday. Clarke spokeswoman Fran McLaughlin posted it to the department website on Friday. She said she did not know where else or how often the spot would be broadcast, or how much the department spent to air it.

Clarke has served as lightning rod before, most recently when he called for schools to arm teachers in the wake of the Newtown, Conn., massacre of 20 children and six adults at an elementary school. News of the sheriff's gun ad quickly generated feedback.

A bozo radio host in NE

A bozo radio host in NE Wisconsin was talking about this commercial by Sheriff Clarke like he (radio host) was some kind of social genius and you should not question his judgement. His attitude was like how dare you have a gun to defend yourself and not rely on the nanny state to care of you. This pompous ass is exactly what is wrong with America. Yes siree, cradle to grave, the American way.

Quote from a friend of mine in Milwaukee

Friend: "Do you know what the police response time is?"

Other friend: "What is it?"

Friend: "...I don't know but it's not 1200 feet per second!"

Dare I say...

I'm proud to be from Wisconsin? lol :)

5 words if I lived there

Buddy you got a deal.

Be brave, be brave, the Myan pilot needs no aeroplane.

A lot of them 'Libbies' are bashing Sheriff Clarke

It sickens me to hear those who prefer to be victim in a sweet happy gun-free zone.

But it emboldens me to hear the sheriff talk self-reliance in our harsh reality.

I believe in the freedom to be what we choose to be.

Preaching Self-Responsibility

This kind of talk from a sheriff certainly shoots holes in the gun grabbers' agenda.

Milwaukee may be the most segregated city in America

There are LITERALLY neighborhoods where you will not see any white people, others you will not see any black people, others you will not see any Hispanics.

One of the nicest neighborhoods, Lincoln Heights, is surrounded by absolute ghettos.

Second or third poorest city in America.

F'in war zone just waiting to happen.

Oh, and p.s. it's also now basically a suburb of Chicago. Isn't that special?

Pandacentricism will be our downfall.

Milwaukee is the most segregated city in America

Or at least its always battling with Detroit for that honor.

But there is no neighborhood called Lincoln Heights.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neighborhoods_of_Milwaukee I've lived here my whole life and I've never heard of a neighborhood called Lincoln Heights.

It has the fourth highest percentage of low income residents for big cities in 2009 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_the_poorest_places_in_t...) but its right there with the next five or so cities. And in 2012 I ranked 8th or 9th http://marquettetribune.org/2012/09/27/news/milwaukee-reside...

And a suburb of Chicago? No one that lives in Milwaukee travels to Chicago to go to work. So what makes it a suburb? Because it's a smaller city near a larger city? Look I get Milwaukee has it's issues but I just don't understand the vitriol. I love living here

Washington Heights - that's it.

Washington Heights - its the district where the mayor lives - nice houses, yards slightly bigger than a square centimeter.

only 8th poorest city? oops wrong again.

Suburb of Chicago? That was a metaphor maybe 2 years too prescient.

my only brother lives in the center of that s-hole so maybe I was hasty in posting my figures - apologies.

I spent lots of time there as a kid visiting my cousins. Great town. Too bad what the federal government has turned it into. Cheeseheads unite.

Thank you for finding and linking to stats to support these sad statistics. These numbers do not make me proud.
