Update: Who's the Commander?

This is part of the Postcards from the Revolution series.

So, no one read my mind (see the original post below). The answer was mentioned, but not as the answer :(.

Towering high over the Cambridge Common, just a stone's throw from Harvard Yard and the Square, stands the sign: SHERATON COMMANDER. What a strange name for a hotel, I always thought. I thought that for years. Until I went for a visit, and then I understood. That is when I learned the identity of the Commander.

The Commander

So. Who's the Commander?

- Original Post -

Picture coming tomorrow.

In the meantime, somebody read my mind.

This is part of the Postcards from the Revolution series.

Read my mind and you win a poster.

I'll go with

Ethan Allen, but for some reason I think it was George Washington.

I'd have to go with

ding-ding-ding. We have a winner!

George Washington is the correct answer! Mr. Washington was Commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The hotel has an awesome statue of him out front, as well as a diorama of him assembling the troops right there in Cambridge. I took a picture of it. I'll post it next week.

Washington took command from

Artemas Ward -- that was my failed pick.

I'll go with...

William Prescott!

His sage advice was very telling in that it kept Patriots from losing their cool when they were tired and low on ammunition. His steady hand helped them to remain calm throughout the fight.

Even though the British captured their objective, their forces were so depleted they couldn't go further.

William Prescott was famous for a saying we all know. Anyone care to divulge?

I may be wrong but it was fun guessing. Thanks, Michael.

"Don't

fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" I forget what battle he said that in, but know it took place in Mass, so... I think we found our winner ;)
