12000 murders, 300 rifle deaths, the truth about guns, 2011 Statistics

Really unexpected. I didn't think that very many people got shot with rifles, but evidently the truth is you're more likely to get killed with a hammer than a rifle.

Here's some cut and dried charts, plus some conjecture about how violence would look without handguns. I'm not sure what to think of that one, but it at least shows how the "runner's up" do relative to each other.

Whatever the opinions, the assault weapons ban is a big case of being "worried about the wrong thing".
