Affordable Health Care Act, not so affordable for smokers

Smokers, beware: tobacco penalties under President Obama’s Affordable Care Act could subject millions of smokers to fees costing thousands of dollars, making healthcare more expensive for them than Americans with other unhealthy habits.

"But quitting is not easy, and charging older smokers up to three times as much as younger ones could make it difficult for them to seek care in the first place. A 60-year-old smoker charged with the penalty could be paying about $8,411 per year for health insurance, which is about 24 percent of a $35,000 income and is considered “unaffordable” under federal law."

I'm sure Uncle Sam will be getting to those other "unhealthy habits" sooner or later.

Cigarette taxes are insane

Obamacare sounds like it will suck for employees. What bugs me most is all the comments revolve around the effects of smoking, as though ill-effects somehow justify tyrannical taxation. Thank you daddy government and your junior tyrants all over the nation for protecting me from myself.

Are they going to drag me to a doctor?

I have NO intention of seeking "modern healthcare" unless and until I have a heart attack or break a bone. I know they will just steal the money for insurance from my check, I get that. But how are they going to find out whether or not I smoke if I never go see a doctor? Or will I be thrown in jail for refusing to get my check up?

Hey Fishy

I understand and agree with your sentiment, however, it's fairly certain we'll be moving to a cashless society at which time THEY will know everything about you from the brand of your smokes to the brand of toilet paper one wipes their a$$. As evidence by O's gun control E.O.'s, our health/habits will be used to determine how many of us live our lives. As another poster stated, it's about control, complete control of the herd.

Eh, not so much.

We still use a credit union and are aware that we are well tracked, but we actually recently made the decision that we are moving to cash only, and live in an area where even if they outlaw cash, we will be able to get what we need. We have seen this coming for years and have been getting ready to make the leap to total self reliance. We are doing it very slowly, trying to get exactly what we want. We have had "practice" aquaponics systems for a couple years, been gardening for even longer... on short notice, we could hunker down and live. I'm not pretending it is any kind of bunker, if they come looking to kill me they will. But I "disappeared" from many electronic trails already, and fully intend to further decrease my e-footprint.
Enjoy my pearls of wisdom while you can, probably within the year I will become an occasional DP lurker... lol!
I expect this to become my most upvoted post ever... ;)

'Hope this helps. Answers.

"But how are they going to find out whether or not I smoke if I never go see a doctor?"

Pictures.

In California, even if you're merely a pedestrian (like me, never driving), you're shot by gov't cameras like ... 20 times or so A DAY, while crossing streets, getting in/out shopping and business centers, etc. You name it. Better not pick into your nose too often, if you want to save the face.

"Or will I be thrown in jail for refusing to get my check up?"

Yes. It's called "the force of law".

You're welcome. Say thank you to the welfare state.

Smile for the camera?

I don't live any where near any cameras. And if they really come all the way out to East Bejeezus to drag me to a doctor, they might want to keep an eye on my neighbors, one of them is a champion marksmen.
This is just going to get ugly, between grabbing guns and forced "healthcare" they are determined to see blood in America's streets.

I'm always smiling outdoors :P ;)

Bah. I don't care how many times they camera-shot me. I don't care what they know about me. I DO care about them not missing a tiny bit of what I think of them. Of what I think of their sustained destruction of our (yours) rights.

I know the collectivists' schemes, and governmental leeches they breed all too well and their frauds that work only with the gullible.

But I feel for the american people who aren't familiar yet with these horrors and infamies. It will be tough for some of you.

That's the ultimate goal of TPTB:

put EVERYBODY in their spreadsheets. Once and for all. Food, energy, time, locations. And how your sweat is consumed (by them).

The government is going to do everything they possibly can to provoke violence from among the non-obedient who's had enough. To crush those, with the help of the obedient and useful idiots.

Classic PTB subversion scheme.

We'll have to outsmart that, that's all.

I agree, we really have to come up with OUR plan

or we will be swept along with the current as they implement THEIR plan.
But, "cat herding" will never work. If we are to move to a consciousness where individual liberties are respected, we can't demand everyone do the same thing to get there. Conundrum.

I agree. The best is always to take care of oneself, first.

I agree. The best is always to take care of oneself, first. But Liberty defenders need to stay in touch with each other. If only to keep the non-official information flowing.

Isn't the whole point of liberty

being responsible for yourself and your actions? You smoke, you pay.
Why should other people pay for the repercussions of your decision?

Hi Jill

Your comment is typical of the average person in that "if it doesn't affect me, I don't care."

Let me just suggest, Jill, that you may not be a smoker, but YOU will be next.

From the American Cancer Society 2011:

Approximately 1,596,607 people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2011. *does not include skin cancers which are not required to be reported . (see below)

Approximately 571,950 are expected to die.

Approximately 171,600 are expected to die due to tobacco use.

Approximately 190,650 are expected to die due to obesity and/or physical inactivity

Approximately 220,620 are expected to die due to other causes of cancer.

Approximately 2,000,000 people per year are diagnosed with skin cancers.

Approximately 230,480 woman are diagnosed with breast cancer

Approximately 78% of all cancers are diagnosed in people over 55.

Who's at risk of developing Cancer? Everyone. Slightly less than 1 in 2 men and slightly more than 1 in 3 women.

About 5% of all cancers are strongly hereditary.

Of the 1,596,507 people diagnosed with cancer, 221,130 will be diagnosed with Lung Cancer, the major cause of smokers cancer.

The remaining are Breast, Kidney, Liver, Child cancer, leukemia, pancreatic, prostate, colon, rectum, lymphoma, ovary, oral, thyroid and bladder. (again, not including 2 million skin cancer)

I think the stats speak for themselves. Smokers have always been abused by taxes and the healthcare system, but as you can see, there are more of you out there than them. So, maybe your mother or grandfather died of cancer....guess who's gonna pay the bill via mandated healthcare penalty? You my dear.

Affordable Healthcare Act is not about medicine, it's about control and eventually it will control all of us, even you.

Your rationale doesn't hold water

Because...........

People are FORCED into national health care!

If health care is mandated by the state, they own your body because of statements such as yours. They will start the elimination process with the consent of all those not affected by the rule until no one is left to stand up for rights. The 2 wolfs and one sheep will decide what's for dinner by vote. Overweight a bit Jill? I hope not because a thin sheep may not stand a chance in that vote and a nice fat sheep might as well bend over and kiss big plump rear goodby.

That mind set would only hold water as being 'fair' , not constitutional, but 'fair' in your argument if in the beginning they were open and honest about their agenda. If they made everyone have a health exam and do tests. Then if over 20#'s over weight, [ obesity kills more people] drink alcohol to excess, do drugs, are diabetic from an unhealthy eating habits, high sugar consumers, or perform any dangerous act putting their health at risk. Charge them to the point of not affording food. Do you really think they are worried about your health? It's CONTROL !
Wish I still had the video on a guy ordering pizza on the phone for home delivery in the NWO society. It was a riot. [2008]

The next step is not going to be what you think, going after alcohol consumption. It's their agenda to go after fat people, not that the alcohol consumers will be overlooked.. They started with the children. The NWO plan started a test using Georgia. In Georgia the 'nurse' was to do a strict pinch test for fat on all students. If they flunked the test, the parents were to be held responsible and there would be legal action although the extent, be it jail or fine, was not disclosed. The phones were melting at the Governor's desk. He decided to not continue the NWO agenda.......... for now.
It is on their agenda to go after fat people next! This is the problem when you give your body to someone else.

You no longer are free for if someone cannot have control over their own body, what freedom do they have?

Deekey

Here's your video...

Ordering pizza in the future - it's scary...

Thanks for video

Thanks bdunn!

You know, in 2008 when I first watched it, thought it funny. So much has happened, we are so much more enlightened and the intrusion into our personal life is on our doorsteps.
You're right, now it's more scary!

Deekey

I completely agree.

How will they know if one smokes though? Perhaps the ubiquitous surveillance apparatus? One would have to be an idiot to narc one's self out.
