Senators Demand Answers from AG Holder Over Aaron Swartz Death

Huffington Post - WASHINGTON -- The top Republican and top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee sent a joint letter late Monday to Attorney General Eric Holder posing pointed questions about the prosecution of Internet pioneer and political activist Aaron Swartz.

Swartz committed suicide this month after fighting federal hacking charges for two years. The letter from Issa and Cummings is the first clear bipartisan response to Swartz's prosecution, heavily criticized by computer and criminal justice experts as unwarranted and excessive. Swartz would have faced up to 35 years in prison if convicted of hacking charges stemming from mass downloads of academic journal articles from the online database JSTOR. Although Swartz had legal access to all of the articles, he was accused of violating the database terms of service by downloading so many at once. JSTOR had opposed his prosecution.

Issa has championed Internet freedom causes in recent years, and was one of the first Republican lawmakers to speak out against the Stop Online Piracy Act. Swartz was a leading opponent of SOPA. But Issa also has a reputation as a hard-nosed political partisan, who made few friends with Democratic members of his committee during his "Fast and Furious" gun investigation, which devolved into a conspiracy-theory circus.

Rand Paul

Has Dr. Rand Paul said anything about this. She is definitely a government bully.

"committed suicide"

aka suicided.

This is THE AMERICAN OUTRAGE of the year!

This young man, imo, was framed. He was facing charges that were trumped up. He was a BIG-TIME THREAT to the "establishment". He got in their way. He made them mad. They wanted REVENGE.

That young man had every reason to live. So, why didn't he? I doubt seriously he committed suicide. You can fake a suicide, if you know how to do it, and who would know how to do it? Someone who knows law enforcement backwards and forwards, not necessarily a law enforcement person.

Where is this young man's family on this? Are they speaking out? They had better do something for his sake. He cannot speak beyond the grave. He had EVERYTHING to live for, EVERYTHING...

It's we the people who must speak.

If there's one thing we should be "collective" about - it's that when one people's rights is violated... all peoples' rights are violated.

deliberate evil

for most of us it is a mama's baby; for them it is opportunity. these psychopaths are going to make 1984 look like Charlie Brown

A true flower can not blossom without sunlight and a true man can not live without love.

Issa can be a bulldog

at times but I am still waiting for someone (Holder) to held accountable for the murder of Brian Terry because of the Fast & Furious debacle. Issa was my congressman until this Jan. so he has heard plenty from me. Now, Hunter Jr. will be getting my calls about Swartz.

God bless ya.
