Anyone want to fast with me?

Two weeks from today begins Lent http://www.marypages.com/Lent.htm

I am posting this now, so those who may want to join me, will have two weeks to feast, or enjoy, what they will give up for lent/40 days.

I have practiced Lent for decades because I always found spiritual strength in not being alone in my suffering. The first time I practiced Lent, I gave up chocolate. Every year I progressed, until last year, I gave up food.

That's right, I did not eat for 40 days, and this year I intend to do the same fast because it was so successful.

When I decided to give up food for Lent last year, my doctors were prescribing me medications, 27 pills a day I was taking, and I was getting NO relief. Since my fast, I have not needed any medication and my doctors are amazed at my tests.

While going through Lent, one doctor advised me to drop the fast and scheduled me for a meeting every week. I went to confession and told my priest that I lied to the doctor and told them I had given up the fast, but I did not, because it wasn't hard to do. I was feeling great.

Many here who don't believe in Jesus, or the power of healing, can say whatever they want about it. Jesus helped me heal myself, and made me not hungry until the last week of my fast. And let me tell you, I was tempted. Oh how the Devil tempted me. I was getting dinner offers, and free food coupons, and the soup kitchen was receiving crab dip and beef roasts, and cakes and cookies, and chocolates that made my mouth water. Sometimes at night my body was so energized I could hardly sleep. Still, it was not so hard that I would not want to repeat fasting for Lent.

Some of you may want to experiment, like quitting smoking, or beer, or soda, or ice cream.. whatever you really really like.

I really really like food. I LOVE FOOD. Last year I lost 40 pounds. I was not fasting to lose weight, but to lose the meds.

For 40 days beginning February 17th, I will be consuming:

6 oz Grade B Maple Syrup with
6 oz certified 100% organic lemon juice, fresh squeezed (lemons go on sale at this time of year and so you save money on food bill as a bonus)
Good Water, not distilled.. I also use sparkling water.. and even flavored waters. Clear beverages with no and very low calories.. boullion, coffee, but this is very limited, and I really don't go there until the last weeks, also sugar-free gum helps, because your jaw will miss chewing. I freeze half the Lemon syrup mixture to eat like ice cream some nights.. and make it like a hot tea on cold ones.

So, If you would like to join me on my food fast, or merely give up something you LOVE for Lent, I thought I would make a thread as a kind of support group for those who could use some support giving up something they LOVE.

While I am religious, and do my fast for religious reasons, this was not always my case, so I do not want to make this a religious thread. I have my Church and ADORE JESUS, so grateful to My Lord God and savior. My sacrifice is mine. Your sacrifice must be yours alone. For God, or for yourself, matters not on this thread. The only thing that matters is that you have decided to fast for Lent/ 40 days, and appreciate support from those who are also fasting.

TWO MORE WEEKS.. These two weeks are going to pass very quickly, so I just want to give you a heads up now, so you can mentally prepare.

The celebrations come before and after Lent

Lent, in my words, is a time when we give. We give what is good to the poor, the needy, the children, the aged, the sick.. we give up meat, except fish on friday.. I'm going extreme.. But for most catholics, there is no meat.. and fish does not include lobster, jumbo shrimp, scallops and rich sauces.

We give until it hurts, we fast, diet, to remind us that Jesus suggered and died for us and that is the most precious gift we have. We become humble and we learn to love deeper than we dare.

We pray, we give more to the Church.

Before Lent, we have fat Tuesday, popular in some areas once ruled by the French: Mardi Gras.. (I have a bottle of Hurricane mix for my celebration) and the last feast day before Lent. Ash Wednesday, we go to Church reconfirm by recieving last year's palms burnt to ashes that are smudged upon our foreheads, and we fast and repent, give and pray, for 40 days.. basically until Easter, when we are able to feast again.

but do you know why the churches celebrate the 40 days of lent?
are you familiar with tammuz?
tammuz was 40 years old, when he died from being gored
by a wild boar. this is why some churches eat pork,so 40 days is 1 day for every year he was alive
tammuz was reincarnated as an egg laying rabbit
does this sound christian to you?

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

Tammuz is a month on the Hebrew Calander

It doesn't even sound Hebrew to me.

The Catholic Church has Old Testement (Torah) and New Testement, and Gospel.. those are our three readings, every day.

Lent has nothing to do with Tammuz, at least not since Jesus spent 40 days in the desert fasting. Maybe that was why Jesus really did it.. I don't know and am by no means a biblical scholar. I do go to Bible Study and we use many scholarly bboksm and I attend Catechis, RENEW, teaching of the Catechism of the Catholic Church. It is my inderstanding that Lent is when we reflect on the suffering Jesus.

Should I give up the DP?

I do love it ;-)

You should sacrifice some bucks for DP

Your fast could be donating FRNs everyday to DP. :-))

How you break your fast is very important - especially one of...

...such a length as 40 days. How do you break yours?

You have to ease yourself back into food, because peristalsis (the movement of food through your digestive system - much like wave action), has been disrupted during longer fasts.

Maybe just fruits for a while might be best.

Paul Bragg wrote a book called "The Miracle Of Fasting" which I have never finished reading, but is a very good guide.

I think I'll do some fasts too, but not 40 days. That is intense!

How about the lifestyle idea of fasting one day a week - like every Monday for instance?

Or maybe fast every other day?

This could be done permanently as a habit. This way you have the benefits of fasting without the lack of nutrients for long periods.

Anyway, the idea is to change your diet to permanently dump things like white sugar, all artificial sugars, hydrogenated fats, all soda pop, candy, fried foods, white rice, baked goods (dougnuts, cookies, cakes, pies etc), most crackers, ice cream etc.

For me, the toughest thing to quit are tortilla chips, nachos etc.

You are absolutely correct pawnstorm12

I begin consuming vegan probiotics, and really like Goodbelly's, so I begin adding that and organic tomato, squash and lentil soups about ten days before the end of my fast.

Last year, after my fast, I was really good, for about a month, eating super healthy.. and then, I think it was at some party, I treated myself, and then kept treating myself, and by my birthday, in July, I gave myself permission to eat anything at any time. Part of me wanted to see if the problems I had, would return, or if I could isolate any food alergy.. but I remained healthy, gained weight, but didn't care, knowing I could lose it. And then I decided to fast again, and completely couldn't. So I'm preparing to fast for Lent because for whatever reason, it has always worked for me at this time of year.

This time, I hope to change my diet, fast one day a week (Tuesday) and stick to a healthy diet for more than a month.

I think your post is very important about ending a fast.. THANK YOU!

Since I read this thread yesterday I have really been considering detoxing and or fasting with you. I have my own various juice concoctions I would use instead but I might be on board with you here. When you did this last year, did you get a headache at all? I detoxed for 5 days once and all I remember is the headache and dizziness. I am really thinking about this, but 40 days.... that's a long time to have a headache....

“I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living.”
― Dr. Seuss

One reason I wrote this thread with a two week advanced notice, is so you have time to think and prepare. You have to have a plan.

In my case, I'm going to be purging, drinking a quart of sea salted water the first two mornings and eliminate waste, because the waste in your system can make you dizzy, give you headaches and even make you sick.

About the third day, your tongue will get hairy as the bacteria in your stomach climbs seeking food. Si you will have to brush your teeth and tongue and use mouthwash, or water with some peroxide, and after about three days, that will go away.

For the first two weeks I don't expect to even be hungry.

The next two weeks, If I'm feeing weak.. I will have some Miso soup, clear juices.. cranberry, apple..

The fifth week, I begin to break my fast by drinking vegan probiotics.

The 6th and final week, I continue with the probiotic and begin drinking vegetable soups.. tomato, squash and even lentil.

During the fast, if you feel flatulance.. go to the bathroom.. do not take any chances you can "fart in your pants".

Personally, I see nothing wrong with supplimenting your fast with multi vitamins and additional vitamin C and Bs.

It is also a good time to take epsome salt baths.. give yourself facials, pedicures, massages, spend extra time on yourself, pamper yourself.. as of you were preparing to be your best.

This is not time to exercize, start a training session.. but you could plan, that, or take brisk walks, breathe deep.. practice yoga.

It's important that you prepare for your fast now.. just a little everyday. Organize, buy what you will need and want you want. If you decide to do what I am doing (I encourage you to come up with a plan you can do).

So if you want to do this, make sure you have miso soup broth, not the stuff with noodles.. but you can do that too..

It ios really important to me that you do not get dizzy or hurt yourself in any way.. 40 days is way too long to have a headache.. so try the Master Cleanes, and if you feel you can't go on longer because of a headache.. it's really between you and God.

I love this idea

but I think it is not the right time for me to do it. I have small children that require a lot of physical strength to care for. And I have already lost weight this year (now 113 lbs) and don't want to lose any more.
It would be hard to give up coffee, chocolate and other sweets, so I think that's what I'll do. When I get the craving, I'll drink some water with maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne and think of you and all the other fasters.

Really BIG CONGRATULATIONS to YOU ConstitutionHugger 113 pounds is more than some folks I know weigh fully dressed in coat and boots. Man, that is so awesome! Mind blowing awesome.

The fast is not intended to lose weight.. no one is going to lose 113 pounds in 40 days.. what you have accomplished deserves it's own top thread if not blog... WOW. I admire you BIG TIME.

My hat is off to you!!!

ConstitutionHugger's picture

Sorry- I didn't lose 113 lbs

Sorry, for the misunderstanding- I mean I weigh 113 now. I was only 125 before, so no big accomplishment. And the weight loss was purely unintentional, which makes it kind of strange. I'm the rare bird who's afraid of losing any more weight. I think it happened because I lost my appetite after finding out how corrupt our government is.
Fasting is such an alien concept for me. The fact that you can go for so long without food is really unknown to most Americans. I was interested in your post because I've read elsewhere that it can be life changing. And as you said, fasting helped clear up health conditions for you. I'll have to try it for a day or two, but I'm not up for 40 days...yet.
So much in the Bible is taken as figurative. I'm learning that the Bible should be taken literally in many instances; giants, living for hundreds of years, fasting, all of Jesus' miracles, etc.
Thanks for being a sweet person and for helping all of us DPers in so many ways.

Thank you ConstitutionHugger

I think 12 pounds is a big deal, as it's 10% of your body weight. If you are feeling better for it, I continue to extend my congratulations.

My first 40 day fast was chocolate, and that was very hard. It's not that I ate chocolate every day, but it was a major "comfort food", and when the urge hit, it was difficult to say NO to myself.. but I did. It worked, so that every Lenten season I took a bad habit and exorcized it.

When I could no longer surf, it was really hard for me to find an exercize, so I committed to walking 30 minutes a day, which was not easy for me.. "Look at old beached surfer Granger walking, give the lady a stick." So I began hiking instead.

It takes a sweet person to recognise another, so thank you for seeing me as sweet and helpful. I like to think of myself being that, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zoh1LGADKI8 but sometimes think I'm more http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlN_t9wxUIg

Thanks for the funny youtube clips. I'll be watching the posts about how the fasting is going.

Good thing it got top posted. Fast? ordinarily i would invite you to eat out of a dumpster, WHO EXACTLY DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TALKING TO?

I can and have gone without food or water for 5 days and then I have gone without food for longer. And at this stage in my life i am all about eating. I need food and clean water and clean air.

But you? Yes I can do this. Because I would like to die in the presence of my people, I would like nothing less but there is one thing else I can do for you.

I choose life. For now.

Be brave, be brave, the Myan pilot needs no aeroplane.

What? You know where there's a dumpster with food that doesn't have a lock on it? SCORE!

A fast doesn't have to be about food.

I choose a GOOD, GREAT, AWESOME, WONDERFUL and BLESSED LIFE filled with LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE, Rand Paul for president, and happiness.

I do not believe I am informed of your marital status.

Be brave, be brave, the Myan pilot needs no aeroplane.

I must say this

Thank you Jesus!

My knee area was healed overnight after I posted positive comments here.
Granger Thank you as well.

No more pain.
I can walk miles...

I was in such pain...prepared myself to get/call to the hospital I could not stand walking.

At night I was switching from one side to the other all night...and it was taken away from me by Jesus and his Love.

Granger Thank you so much!!!

Last Christmas Eve, about 4:30 AM, I was adding wood to my stove and had a piece that was just a little too big. I decided to give it a good shove into the fire, and when I did, I lost my balance and landed on my right forearm burning it badly. I nursed it for about 4 days before I went to the clinic to have it checked out. The nurse complimented me on my skills.. it was a third degree burn, I was given medication, bandages and advice and went home.

I went to Church Sunday and the preist asked what happened, so I told him, and I said something about how maybe I was being punished for something, not sure what, but I guessed I had done something to make God mad at me.

My preist said,, "No Granger; Jesus saved you. You could have been hurt far worse, hit your head, or even burnt the house down, but Jesus loves you so much, he stepped in and saved you."

My lesson became, JESUS SAVES.. What the preist said was true, it could have been much much worse. As it was, my burn was very serious, but I healed beautifully. Today you can not even see where I was burned, and that is amazing because I thought I would be scared for life, that is how deep the burn was.

So I absolutely believe that Jesus saves, and heals. Jesus takes away our sins and renews us, when we are open to LOVE. LOVE IS THE ANSWER TO ALL QUESTIONS.

I pray that your healing is permanate, that you never have that pain agin, and if you ever think about it, you will only think of how grateful you are, and how much you ADORE God and he YOU.

Abundant and constant blessings to you my friend ((((((LL))))))

LOVE, BBG Big HUG, one that holds you firm and stays with you until we meet, in Heaven, or Earth.

The Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, is my favorite.

This year it falls on February 13th. Our foreheads are marked with black ashes, while "Remember that thou art dust, and to dust thou shalt return." (Genesis 3:19) is recited. Non-catholics are invited to receive the ash marks as well: you can drop in at any service around the globe and stand in line for the ashes.

It's refreshing to be reminded of our humble simple births - all naked - and the ultimate return to the elements of earth. It's somehow very liberating to remember that everything in between is a GIFT :-)

And, yes, Granger, I will join you: I'll be giving up alcohol & sweets (except for March 17/ St P day ;-)

Aye aye Lass

The Granger's Saint Patrick's Day Lamb Stew

In a crock pot, set on high:

Leg of Lamb, larded with bacon, rosemary, garlic, sea salt and pepper
6 pack Guinness
cook overnight, in morning, cool to debone and cut into 1" chunks
Reserve broth, remove fat

Return to empty crock pot, set high, adding:
2 course chopped onions, carrots and potatoes
2 large cans whole plum tomatoes
cook 6 hours (should be ready for lunch)
add broth to taste or consistancy if needed
can also add additional Guinness to taste.

Serve with crusty soda or Irish bread and Kerrygold Butter and more Guinness.

This has always been a HUGE hit at every St Patrick's Day Party I have been so honored to attend.

Master Cleanse...

I have done it and had wonderful results...also used cayenne pepper, fresh squeezed lemons, organic maple syrup.

May your fast be blessed as you spend time feeding on HIM...the glorious BREAD OF LIFE!

Be blessed precious Granger...
