Anyone want to fast with me?
Submitted by The Granger on Wed, 01/30/2013 - 12:45Two weeks from today begins Lent http://www.marypages.com/Lent.htm
I am posting this now, so those who may want to join me, will have two weeks to feast, or enjoy, what they will give up for lent/40 days.
I have practiced Lent for decades because I always found spiritual strength in not being alone in my suffering. The first time I practiced Lent, I gave up chocolate. Every year I progressed, until last year, I gave up food.
That's right, I did not eat for 40 days, and this year I intend to do the same fast because it was so successful.
When I decided to give up food for Lent last year, my doctors were prescribing me medications, 27 pills a day I was taking, and I was getting NO relief. Since my fast, I have not needed any medication and my doctors are amazed at my tests.
While going through Lent, one doctor advised me to drop the fast and scheduled me for a meeting every week. I went to confession and told my priest that I lied to the doctor and told them I had given up the fast, but I did not, because it wasn't hard to do. I was feeling great.
Many here who don't believe in Jesus, or the power of healing, can say whatever they want about it. Jesus helped me heal myself, and made me not hungry until the last week of my fast. And let me tell you, I was tempted. Oh how the Devil tempted me. I was getting dinner offers, and free food coupons, and the soup kitchen was receiving crab dip and beef roasts, and cakes and cookies, and chocolates that made my mouth water. Sometimes at night my body was so energized I could hardly sleep. Still, it was not so hard that I would not want to repeat fasting for Lent.
Some of you may want to experiment, like quitting smoking, or beer, or soda, or ice cream.. whatever you really really like.
I really really like food. I LOVE FOOD. Last year I lost 40 pounds. I was not fasting to lose weight, but to lose the meds.
For 40 days beginning February 17th, I will be consuming:
6 oz Grade B Maple Syrup with
6 oz certified 100% organic lemon juice, fresh squeezed (lemons go on sale at this time of year and so you save money on food bill as a bonus)
Good Water, not distilled.. I also use sparkling water.. and even flavored waters. Clear beverages with no and very low calories.. boullion, coffee, but this is very limited, and I really don't go there until the last weeks, also sugar-free gum helps, because your jaw will miss chewing. I freeze half the Lemon syrup mixture to eat like ice cream some nights.. and make it like a hot tea on cold ones.
So, If you would like to join me on my food fast, or merely give up something you LOVE for Lent, I thought I would make a thread as a kind of support group for those who could use some support giving up something they LOVE.
While I am religious, and do my fast for religious reasons, this was not always my case, so I do not want to make this a religious thread. I have my Church and ADORE JESUS, so grateful to My Lord God and savior. My sacrifice is mine. Your sacrifice must be yours alone. For God, or for yourself, matters not on this thread. The only thing that matters is that you have decided to fast for Lent/ 40 days, and appreciate support from those who are also fasting.
TWO MORE WEEKS.. These two weeks are going to pass very quickly, so I just want to give you a heads up now, so you can mentally prepare.

Also look up the Master Cleanse. Though the top site on google that you'll get linked to is kind of spammy. There might be an entry on Wikipedia too, for either 'Master Cleanse' or 'Lemonade Diet.'
But yes, you drink it every day (I've only heard about this, never done it).
It was you all along
Many here who don't believe in Jesus, or the power of healing, can say whatever they want about it. Jesus helped me heal myself ... by your own words ( your faith has healed you ) ... your imaginary friend had nothing to do with it.

My Faith is what supported me.
What I LOVE about my FAITH is the LOVE in it, and it's why I really don't miss Objectivism, as I don't miss the hate, at all.
Peace be with you.

maybe
I am in the middle of a 100 day qigong thing and am paying more attention to my diet while I do it. Mostly I am trying to have discipline. So far so good. I might try a shorter fast later on in your 40 days, closer to spring. It is something I have always found interesting and am sure I will try one day. Maybe I will be inspired by all of you!
Seems your 100 day qigong thing
will overlap Lent.. so why not just continue what you are doing and let us support you in the final days GOOD LUCK!!

Granger, I'm a healthy, young
Granger, I'm a healthy, young male and would like to join you but my one concern would be passing out. I work more than fifty hours a week and honestly don't know if I'd pass out or not. I don't have a history of passing out but honestly am totally ignorant when it comes to fasting for so long.
Is passing out even a concern? Thanks.
I did the master cleanse diet for 14 days which is similar to
what Grange is doing. At the time, I was working a physical job(60 hours), and hitting the gym(weights - NOT cardio). At the beginning I experienced a little light headedness & not to mention a little grumpiness. Needless to say, we're all different, and 14 days isn't even half of 40. I would just advise you to try it out for a MINIMUM of 7 to 10 days. The reason being is that a change like that is a shock to your body as well as mind. It actually got easier for me after day 5 or 6. Depending on how you feel after that, continue it or stop. Just understand that just like you have the preconceived notion that you may pass out - you may mentally defeat yourself before you begin. Rest assured - fasting is perfectly healthy, but you have to give your body a few days to adjust.

I did the Master Cleanse for 10 days,
and had EXACTLY the same experience. A little lightheaded at first, grumpy, and tired. On the third and fourth day I felt sick/nauseous. But from day 5 on, it got easier and the hunger pangs subsided substantially. I lost 14 lbs. in those 10 days. As I recall, the Master Cleanse also requires you to drink a laxative tea first thing in the morning, and again just before bed. Granger is right...if you feel gaseous make sure you head for the bathroom!
I was advised by 2 different nutritionists, and my sister who is a nurse, that you should have some small amount of protein while doing the Master Cleanse, suggesting that just a handful of raw almonds would be sufficient, but necessary.
Gee beardeus
Joining me does not mean you have to be so extreme.. it's a support thread because I want support and hope to recipocate. You can do what Federal Farmer is doing, give up sweets.. or salt, or anything you really like. Ralph Hornsby suggested he might give up cheetos and Dr Pepper.. that can't be easy. You can modify your diet.. or pick a diet plan in the store and stick to it.. or try drinking distilled water for 40 days. Last thing I want is for any of us to get ill or pass out. Especially if your job is doing something like this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PZvIBk5WuA
I didn't pass out and I worked.. even mowed a half acre by walking mower twice a week, chopped wood, cleaned coops and composted, cooked for 100 at the soup kitchen.. and cleaned the pots and pans "clean as I go is my motto". You can make this as difficult or easy as YOU like.. what can YOU do? You've got one week 6 days to think about it. I'm curious what you will decide.

I have been wanting to do a
I have been wanting to do a 30 day fast and yesterday before I saw your post I told my wife that I would be starting one soon. In fact I told we probably can't have Valentine's Day dinner or rather that I wouldn't be eating.
I was just asking about the passing out stuff because I didn't know if my blood sugar would get so low that I would. I honestly just don't know anything about it but I want to join you.
My fast is a spiritual one as well!
An uplifting post
Thank you
I will
I do not intend to give up food altogether though. I will probably give up sweets. Last time I suceeded in keeping what I was giving up was with TV when I was in kindergarten.
That's how I started
I gave up chocolate for Lent in 1985, and could hardley wait for Easter, and nougat filled milk chocolate, Elmer's Rocky Road and Cadberry eggs.
I hope you will be pleased.. I have tried fasts at other times during the year, but for some reason.. It's just never as easy.. Maybe it's because Easter ends the whole thing? The last week is a wind down and I do probiotics, so I can eat Easter Dinner Feast.. don't want to miss that. ;))

Just some science
With a fast that long you are leaving your self open to some severe Ketoacidosis(compounded by lemon juice) which will make you vulnerable to osteoporosis in the long run.
Your body will eat the fatty acids from your muscles and fat within the first 48 hours of not eating protein and/or carbs(through ketosis). This leads to higher blood acidity levels. The body counteracts the acid by leeching calcium from bones.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ketosis
you need to understand the science of such an extreme fast before you end up wrecking your kidneys, liver, bones and several other organs.
Tools of war are not always obvious. The worst weapon is an idea planted in the mind of man. Prejudices can kill, suspicion can destroy, and a thoughtless, frightened search for a scapegoat has an everlasting fallout all of its own.
Lemons are the most alkaline food.
Does that not counteract the ketosis?
hmm
They call it citrus fruit for a reason. As in citric acid...
lemons are basically the most acid food a human can eat...
ketosis is a whole different thing to lemon juice.
The lemon juice pulls the BASE calcium from bones to level things out. The blood PH will show more alkaline after eating lemon juice because the body floods the blood with an over abundance of base to compensate.
the lemon juice will add up over time but the ketosis is much worse overall with regards to base leech from bones.

I don't think so.
A few years ago the only food alkaline charts available on the Internet all showed that lemons and then watermelon were the most alkaline foods. I see there are far more 'experts' now. There are some now that claim avocado is, stevia is, or potatoes are. But lemons are still either the top or near the top on all. Even though they would be classified as acidic as in citric acid they effect the body in an alkaline manner. This I know. I experimented with it for years. But as far as ketosis is concerned I claim complete ignorance. Lemons and watermelons balanced my ph in a big way. This I truly know. Here are some current charts.

I do appreciate your input though. I will do more research.
No, lemon juice is acidic, not alkaline/basic
Get some pH papers and do a simple test.
Below neutral = acid/acidic - like citrus juice
Above neutral = base/alkaline - like mineral water
A lot of people mix them up.
Maybe the rind is alkaline, but I've never consumed much of the rind in juicing. A little bit would remain if I was being lazy.
Whomever this information is coming from is misled and should be corrected.
Don't trust the internets, trust yourself, go to a pool store and get some pH papers and prove them wrong.
I don't know about watermelon though, probably near neutral.
Uhhmm.
I posted several links. Look up any Site. Lemons are alkaline forming after consumption. I just commented that I balance my own ph with lemons and watermelons: fact. Plus every Site on the Internet agrees that they are alkaline, some just do not have them[lemons] as the most alkaline as I initially stated. It is certainly in the top ten. Yes, if you do a ph test with lemon juice it is acidic, but that is not how it reacts in your body: fact. Try it yourself. The SAD(standard American diet) is extremely acidic. Breads, processed foods, sugars, carbohydrates, alcohol, pharmaceuticals, meats, and fish are all acidic. Fruits and vegetables are not.
Well firefox
Last year, I felt great.. the last week was the hardest, but most of that was because I wanted to chew on something.
If I don't feel good.. I'll stop. I'm not into hurting myself.
I have doctors appointments (4), blood tests, all lined up (cholesterol, thyroid).
I'm BIG boned, strong as an ox, healthier than the doctors.. Good DNA, what can I say.. If I feel weak, like I can't win in a boxing match against 80% of the male population, I'll stop. OK?
STAND WITH RAND 2016
Strong as an ox,
harder than nails.
; )
Ok tell me when we are starting and what is allowed.
.
Two weeks from today
13TH February 12:00:1 AM.
What is allowed? It's up to you. What are you willing or wanting to lose? Sugar, salt, alcohol, meat? I would suggest you pray on it. You have two weeks to prepare. What I LOVE most about it is how close I feel to God through my sacrifice.
STAND WITH RAND 2016
fasting is not just for Christians
many religions use it
VERY VERY TRUE!!!
Anything you want to share about that would be most welcomed by me!

I love that lemonade fast, Granger.
I may try it with you for ten days. You are tough as nails doing it for forty days, WOW! I did 13 days once. You don't use the cayenne?
((((((((((((((((dducks)))))))))))
THERE YOU ARE!!!! ((((((((((((dducks)))))))))))))
This is my Extreme Granger Lemonade Twist Fast for Spiritual Health. And yeah.. sometimes I'll use cayenne.. I love cayenne, it's the cajun in me cher!
I'm not doing the traditional Lemonade Cleanse.. I have and I loved it so much.. I extended it with twists.. only will do the salt water flush for two days.. after that.. Lemonade for a couple of weeks with a lot of water, and then I'll start clear broths.. sometimes apple juice.. we'll see how I feel and what kind of support.. 1988vote just informed me about natural gum.. so instead of the sugarfree stuff.. I'm going to get some of that when I feel I have to chew on something.
Don't forget, I like to think I'm tough as nails and why I'm recovering from surgery since failing to wear safety goggles and mask. Another reason I thought I might find a support group here.. so many health conscience people.. helps. <3 <3 <3

You are not welding are you?!?!
How are the eyes now?
I am glad to try to participate. I need to do it. I have been eating poorly lately and I need a clean start. I usually have to get real sick before I do a cleanse. But now is a great time.
You are tough as nails, jeez!
