DP Originals - Here's the Plan Guys.

So have you noticed? When you're posting a forum topic on the Daily Paul, in addition to the choice of Forum and state, you have one of 6 'helpful tag' options. The one we're discussing is "DP Original." The idea behind it is this: We need more voices. We definitely have some voices, but many are already pigeon-holed and scapegoated by the "libertarian" epithet. We need young voices that rebroadcast the ideas of Liberty for a wider market.

Make no mistake about it, the Daily Paul is fringe. We are a fringe group. Don't be ashamed about it. Don't try to hide it. As a long time poster here used to say (before he got banned): WAHOR! We All Have Our Roles. This is one of the most instructive and important posts ever made here.

We all have our roles. We all play them to a T. Don't hold it against someone personally if they serve a different role. They didn't choose the role! The role chose them. So whatever role you got, embrace it with gusto.

Do you know how that whole fashion of baggy pants -- all falling off the ass, halfway down practically to the knees -- how that fashion got started? It was in prison. The prisoners were denied belts. Thus their pants were always falling down, just like that. And then when they got out of the brig, they wore their pants like that - for whatever reason. The point is, they learned it in the brig - a tiny, isolated community (like the DP), then they made it cool. They made it so 'cool' that the style became one that is mimicked even in the suburbs of White America. (Still a classic)

Watch that Eminem video. White America. This video predates Ron Paul for me. This video is from when I was still waking up. The Eminem Show was my soundtrack from 2002-2003.

Eminem was way ahead of the game, calling out the hypocrisy of the US government. Right at the beginning of the song, a voiceover says, “I want everyone to listen to the lyrics of this song.” Do it. They’re prescient. This song was a foreshadowing of the the tea party; it was a foreshadowing of the police state; it was a forshadowing of Sandy Hook. Watching as I write, I see he references school shootings at 1:40, and points out the terrifyingly obvious: The shooters look so normal, like the rest of us. "Eric looks just like this," he says, a reference to Columbine shooter Eric Harris, acknowledging that anyone could potentially be an enemy: “I could be one of your kids.” So where does this lead? Drugging our kids. Police state. Fear. The enemy is no longer “out there,” it is within our borders. Screen everyone at the airports. Make them take off their shirts, their pants, their shoes and sox. X-ray them naked.

This song reached a huge audience.

And that is your mission, dear friend, dear DP reader. You. Yes, you, sitting there in your bedroom. You can be part of the conversation. You can use the DP to practice your essay writing. The best essays, DP Originals, as judged by your peers, go into the “features” section in the upper right corner, and if good enough, onto the front page.

And this is your first step to larger audiences: The Washington Times (the DP’s own Tom Mullen now writes for the Times), and the Huffington Post (Robin Koerner writes for the Post). And certainly others. Prison Planet? The Blaze? WND? I’m sure they’d love to have you. The economics of online media outlets means that they're all in search of free content. That is how the economics of the web work now. No, you may not get paid, but you have the opportunity to make a name for yourself while reaching a larger audience with the message of Liberty.

And it can all start for you here. Here you can be free. Be loose. Develop your style. Refine your points and arguments. Wear those pants like they do in the correctional facility (since everyone knows that all of us here are nuts). Then take it out to the streets. Like Tom Mullen, Robin Koerner, and Eminem.

Take your fringe ideas, and make them mainstream. That's the thing about the mainstream: They'll copy anything they think is cool.

Until next time, peace out.

Michael, executed your plan.

In response to your plea, I posted an essay entitled "Journey of a neoconservative" 2 days ago and thus far it has 2 votes and is not visible on the front page. Did my part . . .

post now linked in DP Original description

when creating content.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

It ain't workin.

Just went through tons of pages on the "originals" section and my post (as well as my others) aren't in there.

What the hell does it take to start a conversation on some real, non-gossip based, topics on this damn site?

I have tried titles of hope and one with controversial titles even, just to get someone to click on them. Each one dies on the vine and withers away, only to be replaced by "oh, look who said something" or "hey, let's rally for liberty". Mindless, inactive gossip. Sorry, for the negativity but I'm starting to get pissed here. I live, eat and breathe this stuff and just because I don't go around suggesting we band together in a small commune to verbally condemn TPTB, because I instead offer real solutions that take deep understanding to comprehend, for those reasons, no one reads them.

If your linking to DP Originals was working, wouldn't my post from yesterday show up or did you again make it vote dependent so that the one drive-by downvote knocked it into oblivion?

...unless this site is only to serve the popular people. :(

Joη's picture

...what?

I said I linked this post in the description of the tag when creating content. As in here.

I can see your latest post at the moment in the DP Originals category here, since you tagged it with that tag:
http://www.dailypaul.com/category/helpful-tags/blog#nid273014

If you're saying your post did not appear immediately in the Originals tab in the sidebar, that is because, as the directions for the tag say, "top voted enter originals".

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

What I see

When I click your last link is a list of them that cross a +20 vote threshold. When I change that to -20, I do see mine. I think +20 is a bit high for a benchmark and effectively does what I am concerned about... keep only the popular topics on there while allowing a few to jump on the bandwagon and downvote something into oblivion before it gets seen.

What I was referring to, however, was the box above my account name with the 6 tabs. Even after changing my threshold to negative, it's still not listed because now more people have jumped on it. (-2)

So... it seems to work exactly how you say it should. Perhaps there should be some moderation involved in what qualifies as an original article.

Joη's picture

my second link has no threshold

you're thinking of here:
http://www.dailypaul.com/original
which has a filter for content on that page only. Changing that filter will not affect anything anywhere else.
This page, my second link:
http://www.dailypaul.com/category/helpful-tags/blog
is where the "DP Original" tag itself links to, of the same content, but unfiltered.

"You underestimate the character of man." | "So be off now, and set about it." | Up for a game?

I share tamckissick's frustration on DP originals.

In response to Michael's plea for DP originals, I spent a few hours writing an article only to see 5 up votes after several days, including my own -- and those only after referencing the article in another reply. I'm simply not willing to spend time to write a thoughtful article with a half a dozen readers. I can send out an e-mail to my contacts and beat that by a factor of 20!

This is what I'm talking about

Put as succinctly as possible:

http://www.youtube.com/wa...

He's the man.

How's this?

Is this fringe enough for the DP Original?

So Mr. Nystrom...

How about you take this post and make it come alive offline? Maybe call it the Bringing Freedom Back to the Freedom of Speech Conference? Or simply the Liberty in Media Conference? Whatever you call it, I'd love to see you, Ben Swann, Robin Koerner, Josh Tolley, Amber Lyon, Mr. Mullen and others at a panel conference hashing out ideas to promote liberty and honest journalism in the media....

I can't take credit for this idea though - Slim Cambridge gets that:)

Take it to the streets yo!

I need to improve my writing skills. English teachers haven't been my best friends over the years.

Michael, you are a legend!

Great post, great site.

I like the plan

Now I just need to get some good ideas.....

Just sayin'

I was getting ready to think up a new post and then I remembered reading the words:

"We need young voices that rebroadcast the ideas of Liberty for a wider market."

and started feeling really old. I suppose I am not one of those young voices :) But I can remember hearing during the election that it was only "the young" people who supported Ron Paul, so it felt good to be "old" then :)

There'll 50 candles on my cake in April. I was in an office this week where the lady had a vase of black silk roses with a 60 sign in it. I thought, well, at least she is proud of her black roses. I have 10 more years to get there.

I sure enjoy the Daily Paul though, even if I am approaching the top of the hill.

Two points bear

1. Like Ron Paul said, in the span of world history, liberty is a young idea. These are the kind of young voices I'm talking about (How's that for a political pivot! I that's not what I was talking about, but I've learned a thing or two watching the pros! Ha ha ha). But seriously, it is true.

2. Your wisdom and experience is much needed for the young people of today who are just learning about the young concept of liberty. You've got a wealth of experience to share. For us old folks, it is a matter of giving gentle guidance, and space without being overbearing know-it-alls to our younger brethren in liberty.

3. (Bonus point - free of charge) Happy Birthday bear! Are you are Taurus too?

He's the man.

Hi Michael,

I got to thinking and have to laugh at myself...just like an old person to make a conversation into something about themselves lol :)

I pretty much put what I am thinking out there though, even if it is a bit personal. That is just me.

I knew you weren't dissin' us old folks. After all, 90 is getting old when you hit 50, so surely you were talking about the 90 year olds!

Anyways, I was thinking of a post when the words young came to my mind. That is my problem, I forget my age, and today I remembered :)

What really struck me funny a couple of years back was that I was married to a 50 year old. That was a very strange thought :)

Thank you for the birthday wishes. I'll have to put up one of those young posts on the 19th of April and let all my Friends in Liberty know that I have 50 candles on the cake...

Time marches on...Long live the Daily Paul and Michael Nystrom...I read your comment about your mom's WWII remembrances. It is hard to realize the horror that people have lived thru. I am glad she made it through as you have touched my life in a special way.

Aries, my friend, but the Bible is the Lamp unto my feet and Light unto my path so I don't worry about the stars. :)

Gosh, bear, I consider RON PAUL to be young-spirited.

We want to hear your voice, too!

LOL - So, I'm not some OLD piece of FRINGE?- LOL :)

That thought came to me this evening as I was thinking about the words I left above.

Yes, Ron Paul, the spirit of youth!!! Kinda like Liberty, it is a big umbrella!

Thanks for taking time to hear my voice and offering yours! :)

no.

I always like your comments and posts, and the one actual conversation we had was informative and rational. Age is merely a number, keep writing and post in originals if you want to.

How kind

for you to say such a thing! I too enjoyed speaking with you. I always like the opportunity to dialog back and forth. Its always fun to make a new Friend in Liberty :)

If you wanna be a trend setter and win from the bottom up.

You need to come with style and grace. The liberty movement is rich on style, but poor when it comes to grace. Being a profane and foul mouthed sapper WILL get you noticed (yes I'm talking to you Anarchist), but it'll also get you destroyed.

It was never enough to just scream you're all a bunch of sheep, especially when some people see themselves as lambs of God. They'll just end up laughing at you, and rightly so.

This is a great proposition, MN! Our young creative & bright

ones will be observing their environments with mindful wide-open eyes and be THINKING concretely how to express their ideas at DP Originals forum, all while working on mundane daily chores. It will give meaning to be in the midst of the world of "interesting" chaotic time ; )

This is just greatness.

Thank you Michael for this.

My one contribution from a while ago has been edited to fall in this category. Not many people saw it back then, but I hope putting in this new category will help more folks see it.

Do YOU have an issue?

"No, you may not get paid"

Says who?!!

Your post got me thinking MN, and coincidentally, my friend on FB posted a link which got me thinking even more about a concept I've been developing in my head for a couple years!

(((((((((MN))))))))))

It was suggested to me to listen to an audio on The Lew Rockwell Show,http://www.lewrockwell.com/lewrockwell-show/2013/01/14/340-im-sick-and-tired-of-neocons/ and I notice he has a list of books with an Amazon BUY icon, also has some of the same advertizers as DP.. and it made me wonder, "Why not have a page of books and items YOU select, for folks to buy from Amazon?" I know about the Amazon buy back and all that, but you still have a Amazon link, so why not make a page or feature a sale of the day on the right side of the page?

Make it easy for folks to buy and support DP.

Thank you Michael for

Thank you Michael for everything you do. You have found *one* of your roles, and have seemed to embrace it. Thank you for encouraging all of us to find our own niche. Great post.

Good Idea Michael

Thanks. We have an opportunity to change how things end up thanks to something nobody else had in history before us. THE NET!
