Pastor Who Left Sanctimonious Tip Gets Waitress Fired from Applebee’s

After a copy of her Applebee's receipt began circulating online yesterday, Pastor Alois Bell of the St. Louis-based Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries phoned up the restaurant and asked to have everyone involved fired.

See the receipt!

the real question is

who were the human minds that picked and choose what got put in the bible and could have they made a mistake?

Oh shut up.

Every church with any kind of built in constitution has doctrinal decrees in order to prevent erroneous understandings of biblical passages, our Constitution has something similar known as the Federalist Papers. Seriously, grow up.

“My attitude toward progress has passed from antagonism to boredom. I have long ceased to argue with people who prefer Thursday to Wednesday because it is Thursday.” - G.K. Chesterton

These kinds of situations are excellent teaching opprotunities

And a perfect way to really educate someone about true Christianity:

We are all sinners, we all screw up, even pastors and those that try their best to appear as 'good' Christians.

This pastor did a selfish and prideful thing - something we can all identify with.

If the pastor has any conviction at all they will admit their fault, learn from it and use it as a teaching tool - along with apologizing and making this whole situation right.

Taking responsibility for ones own actions is a vital component of both Freedom and Christianity.

"The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle."

the pastor actually called

the pastor actually called and, rather than apologize, demanded that the restaurant fire EVERYBODY involved. They didn't fire everyone, but they did fire the employee.

The restaurant made a huge mistake, IMO, as the employee was the one begging the redditors to keep their calm and refrain from doing anything "stupid". Now that she lost her job she isn't holding the anons back. I expect, at the very least, the local Applebees is gonna get some backlash from this. I doubt a DDoS attack though.

The headline is misleading, dome have dug deeper and saw:

-The server that posted the photo was not the server stiffed of a tip.

-The Server posted the photo and was fired.

If you peruse this thread this has been covered a dozen times, from ethical, relational, economic, religious and moral angles.

It's a better thread than the Original Post.

She's better off without that job. That's one of the

crappiest restaurants to work in. The food sucks horribly, and it attracts mostly the dregs of society like this cheap pastor with entitlement issues.

18% is a bit much in my opinion though, however, I understand why most places do this:

#1 - it was a large party. This puts an extra strain on the establishment to serve properly. Mind you though, this gratuity is NOT supposed to be for the server(s) it is supposed to be an extra charge for the MENU items. (the price listed on menus is for normal costs. Having to serve large parties incurs more cost, as well as locking out other business, thus reducing profits. In other words, if ALL the restaurant did was serve large parties, you'd be paying those higher prices ALL of the time)

#2 - tipping went from a standard 8-10% to 15% and now 18% for one major reason: the restaurant industry (read - corporate hacks, not mom&pop) have lobbied Congress for a "tip credit" whereby they don't have to pay minimum wage. They can take a credit for the tips the server receives so they only have to pay the server $2.13 an hour. This figure came about from when the credit was first instituted. Minimum wage was then $4.25. The credit was 50%, but was listed explicitly as $2.13 instead of "half" or "50%." As Congress has raised the minimum wage, they have no also raised the minimum pay for those taking "tip credit." In short, a server has had stagnate (not assuming inflation) wages of $2.13 an hour on their check since the 1990s. (over 20 years)

To be sure, menu prices have gone up, so if they are receiving a standard percentage, then they will receive more in absolute terms. But menu prices haven't kept pace with inflation. If they had, most restaurants would have gone out of business long ago. So something had to give. Most people, even without being charged the tip or even having it suggested to them, offer at least 15% if not 20-30% depending on the total amount of the bill, and of course, level of service. This is the only thing that has allowed serving to remain a viable job. And for lower end restaurants to be able to keep them on to provide this dining style to their customers.

The entire system is a mess, no doubt. And I didn't even get into the "forced tipshare" issue or the "taxed even if you didn't make it issue" that corporate restaurants and the IRS have foisted on the industry.

If you look at all the factors involved. It's no wonder restaurants routinely add 18% gratuity or even tips to the checks for large parties, especially in establishments which cater to cheap skates like this pastor.

Most of these places will eventually have to switch to a deli or buffet style business operation because of the above factors. This will of course mean far less jobs available in an already tight job market.

Certainly, I wouldn't fault the restaurant for firing an employee who complained about a tip (or the lack thereof) to a guest, even a different guest. Such is forbidden.

But that wasn't the case here. The server posted this anonymously, and there was no way to identify the guest. The only thing that might have been done better, would have been not to let on where she worked.

Server did not betray her customer.

Another server posted the picture of the bill. I guess the injustice galled her just like it did many here.

I think there is plenty of blame to go around

The beauty of overblown media coverage of such inane situations is that they create teaching points for Christ followers and Liberty minded individhals to take advantage of to educate others.

I guess when you boil it down thats what life is - opprotunities to be taught and to teach.

This is ridiculous. I'm an

This is ridiculous. I'm an atheist but my parents are Pentecostals who believe women should not be preachers... and I agree for whatever reason. I'm not sure why. But this might help my argument. I know for a fact my mother gives 10% but then again they have a tiny church and I'm sure it's hell trying to get people in there since their long time pastor died a few years ago. I don't really know because I always refuse invitations to go back there.

My point is women should not be preachers, and bitches like her especially should be kicked in the head. That's pretty much all I have to say.

So you give 10% to God and....?

That makes you immune to the rest of society?

Fuck the whore Christian Supremacist.

You're Not Sure Why?

How can you be someone that is critical thinking enough to be hanging out on DP and yet not critical thinking enough to know why you don't think women are capable of preaching? I suppose you think only women should be nurses too? Makes no sense to me.

Well, here ya go. It's pretty

Well, here ya go. It's pretty simple. Do I really believe any of this religious crap? No, but do I know and understand what the bible says? Of course I do. I was raised that way.

Yet Another Reason

why I think the bible was written by a bunch of control freaks. I personally have more respect for women. In fact I think anyone that wrote that claptrap probably were AFRAID of women! Are you?

The prohibition on women pastors.

The prohibition on women pastors has nothing to do with control, that's nutty feminist rhetoric coined by a bunch of morons who can barely read proper English, let alone comprehend the scriptures. It has to do with the fact that the office that a presiding priest/pastor holds is a patriarchal office, it's no different than being a father, something that is impossible for a women to do (even if one goes to get a self-mutilation...excuse me, sex change operation).

This does not necessarily prevent a woman from preaching in a non-pastor/priest capacity, which there are also examples of in the scriptures, but said office is one that holds authority over all people, and it is a circumvention of nature for a woman to hold authority over a man or otherwise control a man. There are plenty of pagan religions out there that will welcome women possessed of a big mouth and a desire to stick it to the patriarchy, but Christianity doesn't work that way, deal with it.

Not All of Us Guys

agree with that BS way of thinking. You sound as self righteous as that bitch "pastor" I guess we can't all be as enlightened as YOU when it comes to scripture and women. You sound just like my father-in-law. He was a Baptist preacher and felt the same way you do. So much so he beat the crap out of his wife and daughter on a regular basis. Such great guys your type are.

Tsk tsk.

You're the one calling others control freaks, so I'd check your premises regarding who is "self-righteous" here. The fact that your father-in-law was an abusive Fundy nutcase with a King James Bible is not material to this discussion, so I'll ask you to quit whining about it.

Furthermore, comparing me to a Baptist is about as big of an insult as you can throw at someone of my persuasion, even more so than the use of 3rd wave feminist bullocks in order to try to guilt-trip people into thinking like you. Please avoid the temptation of talking first and thinking later, it will serve you much better in your next response, which I will most likely ignore anyway.

The pastor isn't even being fair in his/her "logic"

In her statement she is trying to make... Saying she gives god 10% is completely different because that's 10% of her full income and the waitress didn't ask for 18% of everything the pastor earns just for serving her Applebee's dinner. He/she is an idiot and that's not even mentioning that it's to the church not to God himself. Ridiculous...

Ron Paul 2012

The pastor is a jerk, but

He has the right to be an jerk, but she did not have the right to put his name out there and post that on line. As much as I hate what this man did, she was in the wrong. When you work in customer service, you represent the company, not yourself. It was not a smart move for her to do what she did, because from the company point of view, what if other customers feel pressured into leaving a tip for fear of having it posted online, then they may not go to your restaurant, and the company loses business.

It Didn't Get Posted

for lack of a tip as much as for being hateful. She's supposed to be a loving servant of God for crying out loud! Instead she was hateful to a waitress who had just served more than 8 people. The waitress doesn't work for free ya know. How would you like to work serving 8 people and then be stiffed? I can relate to this girl because I used to wait tables when I was a teen and it's hard work and you only make money off tips. Restaurants don't pay much. It's like working for 2.00 an hour if you don't get tipped. The pastor was being a royal bitch and deserved to be called on it! Applebees was chicken to fire the waitress!

This "pastor" was a WOMAN. Why does everyone call her a HIM? Have you even READ the article?

ya, I read it

it is just a habit. lol Its not to often you hear about a woman pastor.

I Got Down Voted

For pointing out that this was a WOMAN? If people here had READ the article they would have known that this was a WOMAN. Why am I down voted for pointing that out? I don't mind getting down voted but at least have a valid reason for it!

What is this strange activity you refer to?

Reeeed.... the.... arrrrr-tih-cuhl? Do what now? Sorry, I am a passionate activist, I have slogans to type, no time for nonsense...

Love or fear? Choose again with every breath.

Many read headline and posted, but...

-Pastor was a women.
-Restaurant policy of 18% "tip" for large parties. It's printed on the menu.
-Bills are printed by computer, waitresses have no say.
-The party of twenty asked for separate bills in an attempt to avoid the auto-gratuity charge. The computer wasn't fooled.
-Server that posted photo was not the server stiffed.
-Server that posted photo was fired.

Free includes debt-free!

Who fucking cares? - Woman

Who fucking cares?

- Woman pastor, wrong
- Woman, bitch pastor being a bitch, wrong
- Restaurant not enforcing 18% tip policy, wrong
- Restaurant firing employee who pointed out a devil, bible defiling bitch, wrong
- Worker who was in the right, totally right.

I'd sue the restaurant and I'd win. She needs to get a good attorney.

You forgot one more thing.

Posting the personal information about your business, in this case the name of a customer on a social networking site also very wrong and just plain bad business.

It is also against most terms of employment. Applebee's doesn't want their customers being ridiculed. This has brought negative press against them. Don't you get it?

Employee fired. Good luck with that lawsuit.

I'm still waiting for that

I'm still waiting for that handbook that came out before this case...

You got one?

I'd love to see it.

Otherwise I am right and she will win. She most likely has a better employment lawyer than me and she will win.

OK, sounds good. It's easy

OK, sounds good. It's easy enough. There is no policy against it. There is no personal information on that ticket except her name and that she's a bitch. When you can show me an Applebee's employee handbook or contract that the girl signed that stated she had to keep the identity of customers private then I'll agree with you.
