Pastor Who Left Sanctimonious Tip Gets Waitress Fired from Applebee’s

After a copy of her Applebee's receipt began circulating online yesterday, Pastor Alois Bell of the St. Louis-based Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries phoned up the restaurant and asked to have everyone involved fired.

See the receipt!

I agree with your no minimum wage part of your statement...

But it is what it is. And I highly doubt the almighty Restaurant Lobby is controlling too much on Capitol Hill....

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Well then why does this one

Well then why does this one type of business get away with not following the rules all others have to follow?

Tradition?

Google "history of tipping". It's to ensure prompt service. A cashier or DMV employee is not bringing you anything, let alone something you are putting in your body. A cashier or DMV employee is not keeping one eye on you, making sure your drink is full or your food is cooked properly or you need a new napkin or you are ready to pay...

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

You miss the point.... Why

You miss the point.... Why would one business get a pass? If they had to pay a fair wage and we didn't have to tip it would still work out. If you get poor service you don't return and soon that owner has no business. That owner better find better help. If I open a garage and hire poor staff soon I am out of business same would hold true to Food industry. It would be interesting to know why that business has such and advantage over other business.

I feel ya.

I really do. But, like I said, it is what it is. I, too, believe in free markets/pure capitalism, but currently I make $2.83 an hour. Yes, I actually make close to $30.00 an hour at the end of the day, so, for me and my free market mindset, I am winning. I also work my fucking ass off for that. I do not stop for 5 or 6 or 7 hours at a time. I constantly have 3 or 4 or 5 things I have to do simultaneously at any given moment. I work hard for the money (lol). I earn it. I think it is fair, with more than a hint of Capitalism.

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

You are confusing self serve with those who serve for tips.

It's a risky business to do a job, in hopes of being justly compensated for the actual work that's done.

The DMV people are paid great have a super pension plan but their is no incentive to do more than the minimum.

Go to a restaurant with a great waitstaff then see how the DMV got it wrong.

Free includes debt-free!

And so why does the

And so why does the restaurant owner get away with not having to follow the rules every other business is stuck with?

Bob Murphy explains.

I understand the merits....

I understand the merits.... Why can't all businesses do the same? Why is only the food service allowed to use free market?

I don't know.

Governments do not react react to market forces but to political agendas which rarely serve anyone but government.

Government is Greed Inc. That's why Congress created the Federal Reserve and the IRS. The plan is to replace market forces with a political central control.

Ron Paul website... Applebees

Ron Paul website... Applebees tip that got waitress fired... I'm not seeing the connection here. Is the front page automatic now or something? Not sure why this is a featured article.

I was surprised to see that too GB...

...but it seems to have spurred a lot of discussion, and I'm sure there are plenty of libertarian values we can relate to and apply...

As mentioned above, why aren't more industries allowed to opt out of wage control requirements? I'm sure many of us agree people should be able to engage in wage contracts which all parties agree to as many times the under-skilled and young workers are priced out of the market or those low skill jobs simply disappear or go underground.

Then there's the tax exempt status of her alleged church as someone else below brought up...why can't more of us be tax exempt?

Then there's the compensation for productivity aspect of tipping which seems to promote harder work for bigger payoffs...though I despise the expectation or entitlement feeling often display when waiters talk to each other, but again, that's more to do with the entire system. If every business operated in similar fashion, it wouldn't be an issue.

Then there's the entertainment aspect...you got to admit...it even go you commenting!

What other libertarian situations or lessons can be examined? I'm sure there are several others.

Here's one big reason why I love my job.

I can somewhat negate the income tax by not fully declaring what I earn. How cool is that, from an anti-16th Amendment, Libertarian perspective? Granted it's illegal, but not immoral, IMHO, and morality is far more important to me than laws.

It's on the front page

It's on the front page because the thread currently has a lot of activity.

Resist the temptation to feed the trolls.

Guess it's automatic then

I was wondering about that.

I don't believe it's automatic...

Really?

What is the point of this story, or the post?

This story and Post are an excellent example of the distractions that keep Americans twisted up on meaningless topics as we are robbed blind and about to be disarmed.

What a joke. Is the pastor a jerk? That is for his congregation to decide.

Was it wrong for this waitress to get fired? I highly doubt a great employee was fired over this - but it is not really my business.
It ranks right up there with parrot finds way home. Cute but that is it.

Divisive is what it is meant to be.

Evil Christian, mean corporations, only sane people are the government who will protect us - help me government, please help me I am begging you I need to be protected from mean preachers and evil corporations. Only regulations can save me...

Please review some of my previous posts. Divisive I am not.

I had no idea this was going to get this much attention nor activity when I posted it, but I found it interesting, and I shared it with the community.

You chose to leave a negative comment sir...or ma'am!

Rob - if it offended you...

I apologize.

Although that was not my intent, I absolutely overstood that it may be received that way.

As far is it being decisive and a distraction, just look through all the posts.

Divisive and a distraction is what it is. You posted it. I believe what what i wrote. That does not mean that I believe you are a divisive person. Your post was, I am sure your sincere person.

Oh jeez, I'm sorry.

This little distraction is my livelihood. I am no fan of FRN's but they keep a roof over my head, just like you. This meaningless topic happens to mean a lot to many American's livelihood.

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

How exactly

is the post meant to be "divisive"? Is that the new shorthand for "something I don't personally like" or something?

I always laugh when people complain about a thread they don't like (for whatever reason) getting attention, thus bringing the thread *more* attention.

Yeah, real smart.

What a shame that Applebee's has so little respect for their employees. If that "pastor" is the kind of patron you want, then we will no longer be eating there! A shame to because we are excellent toppers and are always polite to our server! Unlike!

And what does that say about Applebees and who they defended. They must not care about how many customers they will lose over this. One gone.

The guest's right to privacy? What about the server's right to pay her bills. She provided a service and the register adds the 18% tip due to the number or people in the party. If the pastor had a problem with the amount, she should have left some kind of compensation for the server. Leaving $0 is wrong, cheap and unchristian like behavior. If the pastor had a problem with the level of service, that should have been addressed, but to use her own personal rule of 10% tithing to deny the server compensation is horrendous. Shame on Applebee's for not supporting their employee and her right to earn a living.

Just cancelled Friday Birthday Party. LOL.

wow...over 6400 posts of which 6000 are basically saying they wont eat at Applebees ever again. Let assume for ease of math that the average meal for 2 people costs 30 bucks(and i feel this is a low average). And the average person goes to Applebees once a month(again probably a low average)...so over the a whole year you just loss over 2 million in revenue from just your facebook "friends"....Great 2 million dollar decision Applebee, you have upper management written all over you!! You can now make that 6001 who wont eat at your restaurant!!

One solution

Unless it's an emergency, ie, you are stuck somewhere and having a low blood sugar fit, stay fkg home and do you own damn cooking. Why do 99.999% of all houses and apartments have refrigerators and stoves? And if you don't have money to purchase food for home cooking, you sure can't afford restaurant eating.

Tipping is part of a corrupt culture, but it is what it is. If anyone does not want to tip, stay home and eat there.

I go only to fast-food joints for fries & coffee once in a long while for a treat. True meals are made by me at home and consumed there (with family). I tip myself with dessert.

Why force someone to tip?

There was a time tipping was considered unAmerican. We let the restaurant businesses get away with paying low wages to its employees and do two things: sanction the slave labor by our patronage and allow the owner to make us do work after we've spent our time there by telling us how much we need to tack onto our bill to make up for the business owners' slave labor.
I don't have the solution, but forcing an arbitrary percentage based on expectation is wrong. If the food is really bad, you send it back to the chef and refuse to pay, but if the service is lousy you get bashed for not leaving a tip? I'm not saying the service was lousy in this case, but you can't call it a tip if it's 'mandatory'.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
James Madison

No one is forcing anyone to tip.

We don't get a paycheck in most situations. Our measly $3.00 or $4.00 an hour wage gets taxed to nothing or next to nothing for 95% of servers (we are taxed on a tip rate anywhere from 10% to 15% of our net sales, regardless if we are tipped). We rely on tips to pay our bills.

Like it or not, tipping is the norm in full service restaurants. And if you don't like it, go to McDonalds. Yum.

And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

On the bright side, at least

On the bright side, at least it's not another Sandy Hook parents are actors post.
