National Elementary School Toy Gun Show-And-Tell Day

Here is a South Carolina 6 year old kicked out of school for bringing a toy gun to school (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/s-student-6-expelle...).

How about this Philadelphia story of a paper gun resulting in the same punishment(http://bungalowbillscw.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-paper-gun-gets...)?

Another child was kicked out for "threatening" to use her "Hello Kitty" gun - but she didn't even have it at school... she is 5 years old (http://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/politics/Kindergartner-B...).

A pair of 6 year old boys in Maryland were playing "cops and robbers" and were suspended. Obviously, they are a serious threat (http://baltimore.cbslocal.com/2013/01/15/parents-furious-aft...).

Have you had enough of this idiotic behavior? These administrators are completely out of control - and they are everywhere. These stories are all from the last few weeks - all in January 2013. There are plenty more, and there will be more in the future. The goal is to demonize the very idea of guns, instead of bad behaviors with weapons, or bad behavior in general.

Objects are not good or evil, people are.

In honor of this basic, undeniable fact, I propose National Elementary School Toy Gun Show-And-Tell Day. Children far and wide should take their Nerf guns, their water guns - make them from paper if you don't have one, draw a picture, use your fingers - just come up with some kind of TOY gun. NO REAL GUNS - you must be an adult to have one of those! Also, no BB guns or pellet guns - just non-firing toys.

Fire any administrator who suspends or kicks out a child for bringing a toy to school for show and tell.

Fire any school board who tries to ban toy guns.

Get a lawyer and sue them individually for all you can - this stupidity will stop, and quickly.

Publicize the names of those who attempt to enforce so-called zero tolerance policies for the idiots they really are. This is not about safety, it is about an agenda of control and fear, and turning schools into prisons. It is about disarming the population by demonizing weapons, not going after the real problem of "gun violence" - that would be those who infringe upon the rights of others.

They can't kick them all out - time for this insanity to stop. It is time for a return to common sense - these are children, treat them like it.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to look at the correlation between school shootings and anti-depressant or anti-psychotic medication, either - but that is for another column.

In elementary school...

I don't remember which grade (maybe first), but I took one of those "half span bridge" wooden blocks, played with it and held it like a gun, and got in trouble.

Once in high school I brought a BB gun pistol to school, because really it's no big deal. No one got hurt (except for maybe a bird) and really no one knew.

Then when I was old enough I started buying real guns and now I am armed like an American civilian should be. GO LIBERTY!

The founders would be ashamed at us for what we are putting up with.

Careful, kids!

Don't point that thing unless you intend to use it!

Don't be surprised

if a SWAT team shows up during your presentation!

It's for the kids sake of course!

Homeschool

Please don't give your child to the government school.

Dang what a great idea - I'm doing this. Tomorrow.

At the community shelter where I eat dinner for free. Some of the kids there cluster around me whether I'm in the mood to deal with them or not. Apparently they recognize me as one of their own.

I'm going to play shoot-em-up-bang-bang with pointed fingers and plastic cutlery with them until the last tray is turned in to the dishwasher station. Should be the best aerobic exercise I've had in weeks.

I'll post an update.

No Free Speech in Amerika! Public Schools are so screwed up!

Notice too, the focus on the bullying problem that they're magnifying. Hate speech, designated free speech zones. The schools in their own words have said "We no longer teach values". We had the golden rule and almost everyone went to Sunday school. Every morning our principal would end his announcements with a prayer- the nerve of that criminal!

It's all becoming very clear...

Kindergarteners are the latest threat to our way of life, thank God we have such brave staff in our public indoctrination centers schools.

Great article

and a great idea to make a point. I would take it even one step further; however, and pull your kids out of these public indoctrination centers all together and home school them if there is any way possible to do that. My daughter has two small children and has decided to do this, and although it is not easy financially for a lot of people, including them, it's amazing how you can trim down the budget by getting rid of non-essential items (like tv, takeout food and coffee, etc. etc.). I realize that it is just not possible for some people, but it is ultimately the best answer to protect your children and give them a proper education if there is any way of doing so. Thanks for posting the idea. :)

Show and Tell

Nicely written. And going on the offensive with a national "toy guns go to school day" could be quite effective. Maybe the campaign runs with a slogan such as "Children Distinguishing Differences: toy gun, real gun, toy gun, real gun."

Rather than gun owners remaining silent, hoping to be left alone, this could become the opportunity to speak to children. This could be a time to speak the truth--that guns are a means by which any of us can even the odds against bad guys.

So, Steve, what date did you have in mind for this national day?

Thanks - on the date

I will think about it this weekend - would be good to have a significant historical anniversary to use - Lincoln is February 12th, Reagan the 6th, both are a bit too soon - maybe late February or early March?

I am open to suggestions.

Well

I couldn't agree with you more. I teach in an American public school, but the reality is that I wouldn't want to put the kids through this. I don't want them to be guinea pigs. I've had plenty of run ins with my school about guns and proper representation of them etc. It's a mess and will not get better unless the whole of society does a huge 180. Ha. It won't, so we're screwed.
