Senator Rand Paul introduces National Right to Work bill

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul introduced the National Right to Work Act, S. 204 Thursday, which seeks to preserve and protect the free choice of individual employees to form, join, or assist labor organizations, or to refrain from such activities.

“Every American worker deserves the right to freedom of association – and I am concerned that the 26 states that allow forced union membership and dues infringes on these workers’ rights,” Sen. Paul said. “Right to work laws ensure that all Americans are given the choice to refrain from joining or paying dues to a union as a condition for employment. Nearly 80 percent of all Americans support the principles and so I have introduced a national Right to Work Act that will require all states to give their workers the freedom to choose.”

not defending any

position, but in this case I think RTW means you can join or not join a union. to me thats liberty, freewill to do as you please. I think its called Right to associate. Not union busting, just your right to decide for yourself.

Im in favor of this.

This bill is not really saying you have "a right to work" it's just a catchy name for a bill. All it says is that it gives you the choice to join a union or not. I believe it is Constitutional for me to enter into a contract with a company without a government forcing me to be a part of something I am personally opposed to and then forcing me to pay dues (just like a tax). In my state of Washington the Union money goes straight back to lobbying for more intrusive legislation or to the Democratic party. In any case it does not take away your right to peaceably assemble, form a union, or participate in one. In my state the labor union and teachers union control everything with an iron fist. Seems some people would complain about Rand if he balanced the budget tomorrow. Im not anti union, and if anything I think alot of them are not bad at all, but the public sector unions and the mandatory union participation to just work have to be stopped. But lets face it, there is no way Obama signs it into law or it passes the Senate. I would like to see it be done on the state side preferably, but it is not unconstitutional to do so at the federal level, if it is point out where im wrong. Thanks.

Bad law

I like Rand, but he either hasn't been listening to anything his dad says or he is trying to curry favor with the guards. Laissez faire means leave alone, not create anti worker legislation. I hate unions and organized labor, but the possibility of one is a necessary check against corporate greed and abuse of power.

Rand is swinging for the fences with this, but it is a solid swing and miss. Government should protect private contract rights, not get involved in them.

Rand Is a Tool, Forget Him

Where in the Constitution is Congress given the power to legislate on state labor laws? Hmm???

If there were federal laws against right-to-work, then overturning them would be fine. But this is using federal power to overturn state law.

By forcing every issue to be resolved at the federal level, you make the fight for liberty impossible. People will support the Patriot Act because they are afraid of gay people getting married. People will support Obamacare because they think birth control will be outlawed federally.

This is how the public gets played and the powerful stay in charge. By playing this political game.

It's obvious Rand is not liberty-minded. I don't know what perverse masonic/good ole' boy/what-have-you club he belongs to, but it has nothing to do with liberty.

This is a move that will win Republicans points in a district or two. But the chess board will remain largely unchanged.

Seriously, really, what's Rand's deal? This sort of policy is boilerplate Republican, and it's good policy in theory (you union hacks out there, c'mon, whistleblowers? yeah, wouldn't want them to remain unpunished for defying the bosses). But how can Rand be ignorant of the deep systemic flaws of the federal government.

This is why this issue won't go away. Our problem is not Obama. Our problem is the whole federal establishment and its overabundance of power and influence in American society. Rand is merely part of the problem.

What, you think that 4 or 8 years of boilerplate right-to-work, low taxes, or whatever is going to unravel the bureaucracy, the Fed, all that? No thanks, I don't need no Reagan-lite. Look elsewhere people, this tool does not deserve our support.

Im confused...

So we sit here all day long complaining about how government takes our money. But Rand proposes a bill to stop a company (unions) from using FORCE to MAKE me pay union dues, even if the employer is willing to hire me without union membership, and he's anti-liberty? Someone fill me in here....

good points

The WHOLE system is evil.

It needs to be changed.
Corporatism is EVIL.

Apparently, states rights don't matter to Rand.

SMASH!

There goes the whole plate, brownies and all. He's going to have to dig for a while to get out of the hole on this one.
I know it SOUNDS right, but I am telling you, I live this stuff, and it is used to keep wages low and end whistleblowing.
Bad Rand!

Agreed

I'm a new member here, buddy of mine turned me on to you guys. I'm excited with this Liberty movement and the energy you all are putting in.

This RTW is bad, I live it too. Upset that this is even an issue at this point in time. Unions are about jobs and people, something this country needs. This country was in much better shape when the unions were big. Now they are just under 12% of our workforce and yet they are the problem? No.

Thanks, and I am proud to be on the liberty team!

Wise

Thank you, I actually have spent a month or so just reading here. I never was much into politics until recently so I needed to educate myself somewhat.

is it like the Reagan thing to fire all the pilots?

WTF is this?

Unions are very powerful in many cities like Chicago...

Unions are not the "answer" either

The right to privately contract is really what we have, what we got from the Creator, and that is enough. "Unions" happened when corporations treated employees like slaves, but then powermongers saw the potential in leading Unions and they turned the Unions into just another was to bleed the people.
Each employee deserves to be judged on and paid according to their merits. The notion that businesses ought to be free to hire and fire at will is more than reasonable, but employers must not be protected when they are committing crimes. That is what "right to work" amounts to.
And if you know that you can be fired because they just got an application from someone willing to do your job for $1 an hour less than you, how loud would you yell about lousy wages? You don't. Especially in this economy. You be glad for the job and keep your mouth shut.

That's an unusually bold move

That's an unusually bold move for Rand. Think he's actually gotten the party behind him on this one?

Another great political move by Rand

I would not be surprised if the GOP becomes the Rand party a year from now.

Another one

Another decidedly non-libertarian bill proposed by Rand.

If a company wants to make a contractual agreement with a union it should be allowed to do so.

No one has a "right to work " any more than a "right to health care".

I'd love to enthusiastically and unequivocally support Rand, but he keeps making it so damn difficult.

You are ABSOLUTELY correct.

There is no right to work spelled out in our constitution. On the same level, there is also nothing in the constitution that says the government can force me to pay a private organization to work for a business who would choose to employ me otherwise.

You see, Rand is not suggesting that we block union membership nor is he trying to block the ability of an employer to enter into a contractual obligation to a union. What he is trying to block is the extortion of dues from people who don't wish to join a union.

Rand doesn't have the same character that his dad does, that is true, but he's still a really good guy. This bill would promote freedom and remove power from the unions who have grown all too cozy with the fact that people have to hand them money no matter what they do ... much like our dear government.

non-libertarian bill?

?

Can you list something?

It means they can fire you WITHOUT CAUSE.

I know, that sounds very libertarian until you catch your employer doing something harmful and or illegal. Then it means you get fired for saying anything to anyone, and they are legally untouchable.
