PTSD: Not Mental Illness, Not a Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is not a disorder at all. It is a perfectly healthy reaction by a mentally stable person who is exposed to horrors and atrocities.

A true 'disorder' would be for someone to go through a traumatic experience and not have an adverse psychological reaction.

It is a cruel hoax to permanently label somebody as having a disorder when said condition is actually a perfectly normal and healthy response to terrible circumstances.

I'm with you on the pills

I'm with you on the pills causing problems. What I'm worried about is all the talk is precursor for nano technology, a technology put into pills that will dispatch the drug and even to where based on duration sought. Keep your eyes on nano technology, a Rubicon crossing if ever there was one.

This reminds me of that old

This reminds me of that old book "Catch 22" where if you wanted to go on a dangerous bombing run you were insane but if you tried to be evaluated for your insanity the act of the evaluation would deam you 'sane' and thus fit for service.

Its like "Catch 22" but now with SSRI drugs...

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

I had an interesting conversation with a veteran today

He told me he had suffered from PTSD but said he would never go crazy or kill people. I echoed your post in a way, I said something like "well I don't know much about it but I don't think what the doctors call PTSD is really a disorder, I think it's normal to have nightmares or jump when you hear a firecracker after you've been through that(war). I think it's the pills that make people crazy."

He replied "Yeah, they put me on paxil, but I didn't like it and I stopped taking it." He's been fine ever since.

Excellent post Chris.

The individual who refuses to defend his rights when called by his Government, deserves to be a slave, and must be punished as an enemy of his country and friend to her foe. - Andrew Jackson

A good explanation.

People do not need labels. They need to work through the pain and horror until it sits more comfortably. As with grief, time lessens the pain.

Horror is not something one can ever forget, but working through it lessens the shock. Pills are not the answer.

The ultimate answer is that humans go beyond the need to create such horror in the world and end the wars and torture.

Do no harm.

As one so labelled, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your post. I won't go into the whole thing, but truly, the fact that I lived through it is a testimony to what a tough cookie I am. Instead of anyone building on that theme, I am labelled "disordered" and no effort is made to cure me, and my efforts to find a cure rather than accept their deadly treatment earns me more labels.
For instance, when I try to say what you just said, it is "denial."

If you are disordered

Then I want less order in my life.

I love you. I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you.

This is the goal, to label everyone mentally unstable.

At least for long enough to permanently take away their means of self defense.
