Have you ever had a dream that you were so sure was real?Submitted by DevinUp on Wed, 02/06/2013 - 12:03
What if you were unable to wake from the dream? How would you know the difference between the dream world and the real world?
Okay, so now that I've gotten the Matrix quote out of the way, let me tell you about my strange morning. It may or may not be related, but the day before, I was having a discussion about hypnopompic and hyponogogic hallucinations (hallucinations that occur while awakening from a dream state or entering one). I also watched a video about Joe Rogan and a NASA physicist talking about how the real world is like The Matrix.
Fast forward to me waking up at around 6:30 this morning. I had planned on getting a couple hours of studying in before class, but I really didn't feel like getting up so I did what any responsible adult would do and hit the snooze button. Another five minutes of peace.
As far as I knew, I seemed to be somewhere with my sister (who lives on the other side of the country) talking to her about something or other. Then my phone alarm went off, and I turned it off, but it kept going. I tried a few other things on my phone to turn it off, but it wouldn't stop. Eventually it dawned on me "Hey wait. Your real phone is going off." Until that moment, everything seemed like that was real, but I soon came to and found that my real phone alarm was going off. It had been for 3 minutes. I must have hit snooze on it and gone back to sleep, but I really thought that I got out of bed.
In fact, I got out of bed and was very tired and groggy. It was kind of hard to make my way to the bathroom and my vision was a little blurry, which it sometimes is in the morning. I pushed open the door to the bathroom and then moved the rug out of the way to be able to shut it easier. Strangely, there was a cat in the corner of the bathroom by the door. I don't have a cat so that was a little odd to me. As I focused in on the cat, I soon realized that I was lying down and the cat was on my wall. That didn't seem right so I tried to figure out what was really going on, and then the cat morphed into part of a wall hanging that I have in front of my bed. I was lying down looking at this wall hanging, and then I realized that I never went to the bathroom to take a shower. I had gone back to sleep.
But it all seemed so real until I noticed something out of place. I'll try to tie this back to this website. So often, people say that they "woke up" at such and such a point. To me, this was during the 2007-2008 GOP primaries. Ron Paul was saying all of this stuff that I was like "Yeah. I agree with that!" but I had never heard any politician say before. Surely he would cause some buzz, but then I saw how unfairly he was treated, ridiculed, or ignored by the media. That wasn't right. That's not how my world was supposed to operate. I started looking into things and then noticed that they were not as I had previously suspected.
The power of the brain to create little worlds is quite amazing. They seem so real and as far as we are concerned, they are real... until we find out something to the contrary. I'm sure there's a deeper thought to be had from all of this, but that's about all I've got at the moment. It made an impact on me and I've been thinking about it a bit as the day goes on.
