Is strattera bad for you?

I have to take strattera for ADD for work. It helps me focus alot, but I hate the side affects to it ( makes my head hurt, loss of appetite, changes my personality, etc.) I quit taking it for a while, but my job performance has suffered because of it, and they are threatening to get rid of me. So I am thinking about get back on the meds again, since it does help me focus. It's a trade off, but having a job is better than no job. Are there natural ways do deal with ADD or do I just have to suck it up and take the medicine? Thanks.

Become a private pilot

I have what they call ADD.

Going through pilot training helped me more than I can express.

Are You Sure

that you have ADD? Is ADD real? Maybe it's what you eat. Who knows anymore?

skippy

A few things that can cause a person

to not be able to concentrate fully are a diet that is too low in fat, too low in B vitamins, thyroid/adrenal problem, and candida overgrowth.

Barlean's flaxseed oil, cod liver oil, and coconut oil are easy ways to add good fat to a diet. The thyroid/adrenal problem is tricky and most doctors don't really know how to fix it if it's gotten out of hand. Fresh green vegetable juice is good for lots of B vitamins. Calcium and magnesium supplements can also be calming.

I took it for a while

and hated it. It changed my personality completely. The shrink then tried giving me adderall and ritallin didn't change my personality much but it gave me really bad drymouth and I always felt a little to awake. I recently found out that I have very severe sleep apnea and the sleep doctor said that bad sleep can give you add like symptoms. He said even though you are tired your brain goes a mile a minute and you can have a hard time falling asleep which is why I never thought sleep was a problem. I always have a hard time waking up but once I'm up I'm ready to go. I go to the gym I went to school.

I really think that ADD is misdiagnosed quite often and it is the result of other things. In my case I believe sleep apnea is the culprit. With others it could be nutrition. My memory is also really bad apparently this can all be related to the sleep apnea.

I say you ask someone to watch you sleep and see if they notice that you stop breathing. If they do I would recommend a sleep study if you do have sleep apnea it is probably the culprit of you supposed ADD. Psychiatrist are always quick to prescribe drugs with out looking for underlying factors.

    Ritalin

    If Ritalin made you feel too awake, could be you don't really have ADHD. That's one point of stimulants for ADHD--they work well for people who have ADHD (paradoxical calming effect) and make things worse for people who don't have ADHD. Too high a dose causes coffee jitters. The right dose feels normal, that you can concentrate better without being able to "feel" the stimulant.

    It's ridiculous when doctors (quacks) ignore people who hate what their meds do to them. Clearly there's something wrong in those cases.

    The only cure for ADD

    Is to busy yourself up and work on something you give a shit about.

    exactly

    exactly

    Get into the good oils,

    omega 3, 6 and 9. They do not work immediately, but tend to kick in over
    a few months. Positive self talk is often used by older ADD people, anticipating situations, and working out a "response" in advance.
    I wish you well.

    Next time you're out for a drive.

    Hold the Steering wheel. Pull up your sleeves and start humming.

    If one is getting enough omega-3 oils (EPA & DHA are available for immediate use).

    And if one is getting enough Nitrogen containing amino acids the results will be almost instantaneous.

    Car is optional, keyboard is fine.

    Thanks for putting it into words.

    "anticipating situations, and working out a "response" in advance".

    This is what training to be a pilot is all about.

    It changed my life.

    As with most things, it is food and mineral

    related. People have to quit thinking the cure for anything comes with a prescription.

    This discussion is very relevant - I'd start at 31:20 at least.

    highlights the effect of some of these antipsychotic class of drugs. Not saying that is what you were taking but this is saying how important sunlight, trytophan (turkey)are and what sugar does to certain people's brains.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qE64bFojCk I don't buy these products as they're expensive. I have others I rely on. That's just me, haven't tried them. But the knowledge: Priceless! Isn't it any wonder "they" want you to give up eggs, use a sunblocker all that bs. Enjoy your turkey sandwiches and sunshine. You could even do your own turkey and freeze it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qE64bFojCk Still paramount - off the tap water.

    meditate

    The answers and the focus that you desire can be found within. Stop the madness of living from outside of yourself. You are very sick and would do best to heal your body and mind.

    If your body is starving for minerals the answer is outside.

    Not working up a sweat is a good way to keep the mineral you already have.

    Free includes debt-free!

    WHAT??!!! Your advice is don't don't sweat/exercise???

    You are right that we need minerals in our bodies and need to take in more if we sweat a lot.

    but to say "don't work up a sweat" is to throw the baby out with the bathwater!

    If he is having trouble concentrating, one of the things he direly needs is to exercise, as we all do.

    The last person I would ever get health advice from is ALEX JONES or anyone else who advertises with "infowars".

    Maintaining good health NEVER requires buying a product or taking a pill.

    If one is mineral deficient sweating can only make matters worse

    OP is clearly mineral deficient. Sixty mineral are the keys that activate different enzymes.

    So here are soil maps for vanadium content.
    http://mrdata.usgs.gov/geochem/map/image/lower48/v_icp40.jpg
    Pretty good chance that that local soils are deficient.

    Meditation, exercise or Karate simply can't create vanadium out of thin air.

    That's all I am saying.

    Free includes debt-free!

    That's right you have to replace the minerals

    Minerals - the food and soil are SO seriously depleted - where are you going to get them? You need iodine, magnesium, less phosphorus, all the trace minerals. YouTube Dr. Wallich! Athletes often die due to depletion.

    mouth breathers are more healthey!

    A change in diet and

    A change in diet and lifestyle is surely best, as others have suggested, but if you're going to take a prescription med, check out modafinil. I've never taken it, only done some research, but check out this guy's experience (the link below) and then do some of your own investigating. Good luck.

    http://sebastianmarshall.com/my-experiences-with-modafinil

    Do some research before you give advice!

    modafinil side effects:

    fever, sore throat, headache, and vomiting with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash;

    bruising, severe tingling, numbness, pain, muscle weakness;

    easy bruising or bleeding;

    white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;

    hallucinations, unusual thoughts or behavior;

    depression, ANXIETY, AGGRESSION; or

    chest pain, uneven heart beats.

    Less serious side effects of modafinil may include:

    headache, dizziness;

    feeling nervous or agitated;

    nausea, diarrhea;

    trouble sleeping (insomnia); or

    dry mouth.

    http://www.drugs.com/sfx/modafinil-side-effects.html

    THEY ARE REQUIRED TO LIST SIDE EFFECTS SO THAT YOU ARE LEGALLY WARNED. IF YOU CHOOSE NOT TO READ THEM, YOU ARE TAKING YOUR LIFE IN YOUR HANDS AND WITHOUT LEGAL RECOURSE. THE COURTS PROTECT PHARMA. Yes, I am yelling. I am appalled that you recommend taking a drug because "this guy likes it." I know some folks who like heroin, swear by the stuff. Maybe you'd like to give it a try?
    Before you ever advise someone to take a drug, google the side effects and see if you would want anyone you loved risking those.

    This is not a complete list..."

    I've never tried straterra

    But I've used adderrall, concerta, and vyvanse. All of them caused me to work more efficiently but it was clear to myself and everyone around me that they made me anti-social. I was never suicidal.

    Eventually I just stopped taking the medication, they had so many bad side effects.

    -Cotton mouth, always dehydrated
    -Always had headaches
    -Couldn't physically eat more than 200-300 calories worth of food a day
    -Always lightheaded
    -Constipation

    My advice: do the diets as suggested below, but if your job is dependent on the medication, use it till you feel comfortable weaning yourself off it.

    Same exact same thing

    You definitely become anti social with strattera I noticed it was more so. I was kind of sociopathic. I just stop caring about a lot of stuff. I could have probably seen someone beating a baby and said "meh whatever" that stuff tunes you out completely it's bad news. See my post above about what I think my cause for ADD is.

    I used to take adderall, but

    I used to take adderall, but then was switched to strattera because I was told it was not a stimulant. I can't stand the side effects to it though. I am thinking about going back to adderall because it seemed not to come with the extreme headaches that strattera caused. The doctor said that it takes around a couple months until it starts to work right, meaning I have to endure the bad side effects that long. F that.

    Ask the doctor how much kickback he gets for the Rx.

    Better yet, just dump this loser of a doctor. He is obviously clueless.

    If you took your car to a mechanic, would you go back after the misdiagnoses?

    Some of the side effects don't go away.

    A weird one that I got and he said he hadn't heard of was that my penis was also leaking a bit. It was really strange like it activated some sort of glan that causes you to leak. It wasn't pee it was the clear fluid that comes out with ejaculate,not semen the clear stuff, but there was no sex or stimulation involved. Sorry about getting a little descriptive but hey we're all adults.
