...wrong reason.

He didn't veto the drones because they violate liberty...he did it because he had other reasons.

He is up to his neck in deficit spending and a new tunnel (which shouldn't be built because one day during an earthquake, a lot of people are going to die in that tunnel).

But he's intent on doing it and work is going forward.

He wants to end all auto travel too basically.

So he ended the drone program because he doesn't want to fight against those fighting against it right now.

Not that he personally believes it's an assault on personal liberty.

But for the time being, it's a big win for Seattle.

I'm in the wrong business. Somebody's hauling in some ridiculous cash for their stupid little surveillance contraptions.

$100 hardware. $10 purchase order. Surveillance? Priceless.

funny city council member worried about spending

I think it's funny how the city council member was concerned about the spending...after it was already spent. Maybe he's a good guy, I don't know I'm not from there. But, if you are worried about wasteful spending on police drones and the salaries being paid to those training on them...maybe do something about it before the program is started - not after the money is gone.

His suggesting the program should be sustained b/c of the investment is like my brother buying my 3 year old a gun, I tell him no and him responding "well it may have been a bad idea, but she's gotta keep it now b/c I already payed for it."

Is that the wrong footage or something? Those aren't the unmanned drones that fly above the clouds and kill people, which I believe SHOULD be banned from domestic airspace.

The "drones" in the footage look like the little toy quadcopters you can buy at toys-r-us.

Of course it was a federal grant purchase, kinda like the $8,000 toilet seats and the $900 dollar hammers. You fly one of these over Billy Bobs back yard and it will look to him like a clay pigeon.

The footage is correct. Is stated in the story these were being considered for use in getting aerial shots of crime scenes. I'm strongly anti-drone for a number of reasons, but I don't forsee combat drones flying over American cities any time soon.

Police drones will likely eventually patrol over certain American roadways snapping photos and mailing out tickets - certainly an annoyance.

But a more serious and likely abuse than SWAT teams using drone on their no-knock raids, will be police forces getting smaller quieter drones that can keep exponentially growing the police state's oppression. Drones that video what we do in our yards or in our livingrooms. Parents having kids taken away because a police video shows them a child or taking sending them fines for video of them fixing something on their house that new regulations say only "licensed contractors" are allowed to do.

There may be a day that there are military drones patrol our cities, but the more likely and earlier step will be their cameras everywhere telling us what to do, how to act, where we can go and when it is allowed. No thanks, keep those drones out of police dept hands.

Yes, and you can bet that the 'crime scene' could someday soon be interpreted as your bedroom and what you do in it. Once they get these toys they are just itching for ways to play with them.
