LoL, Internet. I wonder what

LoL, Internet.

I wonder what else that has your name branded on it can be repossessed 'ex post facto'...

Southern Agrarian

I'd love to see Ron Paul get a good deal here but gotta respect

property rights.

If Ron Paul wants the domain, he can pay the market price for it. If he doesn't want to pay the entire price they are asking, he can negotiate them down. If they won't go any lower than a certain number, he can ask us for donations, and if donations still can't make it affordable for him, then he gets a different domain and the current owners get NOTHING. They have to know this and can't get too greedy.

It's easy for me to say that if I were RonPaul.com, I'd give up the domain, Ron Paul would buy me lunch, and we'd call it even. But, I'm not the current owners. They have their reasons for being stubborn I'm sure. From their perspective, they'll be giving a multimillionaire something of value that might represent a significant income stream for them.

The market will sort all of this out justly. Don't worry about it.

It seems he is negotiating

It seems he is negotiating with the owners and the only "organization" that has oversight of domain names. Agree with you on the rest though.

If the owners are truly Ron

If the owners are truly Ron Paul supporters, why won't they give him the domain for free? Why try to squeeze 250k out of him?

He's not asking for their website, just the domain name which technically is his trademark anyways.

Not a lawsuit

This is an arbitration. WIPO is an international governing body that is an agency of the United Nations.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is one of the 17 specialized agencies of the United Nations. WIPO was created in 1967 "to encourage creative activity, to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world."[1]

WIPO is in charge of Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP)

Maybe you can update your post, Nicholson, to reflect that it is not a lawsuit, but an arbitration.

Oh boy - the United Nations. People are going to have a field day with this.

I sent this to my lawyer to see what his take is on it.

Michael, I sense you are

Michael, I sense you are upset by this move from Dr. Paul's camp. You are not alone in this.

Tons of us here have donated to Dr. Paul's presidential and congressional campaigns for years, some have even donated to his son's senatorial campaign, although I didn't and won't. We saw the sinecure jobs given to family members and we averted our eyes, because he was our guy. I for one have given my last cent to either C4L or the Paul family. I wholeheartedly support the libertarian cause, voted for Johnson this time, I'm with it the whole nine yards. I don't believe in gods or masters, so I won't appoint one through my financial support, and I won't have some folks being treated as a royal family just because other folks decide that one man has some good ideas. Had I known then what I know now, I'd be a couple thousand toward the plus-side of the balance sheet. I'm angry about that.

I doubt Dr. Paul actually instigated this action. I don't think he's quite that hip to the internet. This is some *deleted, overly angry* former marketing major working in image management or some other useless field. The worst part is that *deleted, overly angry*, or group of *deleted, overly angry*, is being paid money we donated during the campaign.

Not in my name.

Thank you.

I'm interested in your lawyer's opinion...

Please share it with all of us, if you don't mind doing so.

Morally, what is your opinion of it Michael?

It doesn't quite sit well with me.

I am surprised that they couldn't make some sort of deal. This isn't good for anybody. They did work hard on that site..

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

this just means it takes more than a desire to promote liberty

to spur people into doing things, be it running for political office or whatever, there always has to be a degree of ambition for personal gain behind it, however minor it is. ron paul never denied having an ego over what he has been able to accomplish. likewise, it would be silly to deny most people doing the so called grassroots things don't have monetary incentives, as is the case with this ronpaul.com owner. What was he thinking when he bought the domain name when ron paul carelessly let it expire? pretty sure quick profits went through his head, but he just got way ahead of himself this time. some say ron paul offered him 50k just for the domain name? and what's the reason he apparently registered ronpaul.org and offered it to ron paul like ron paul should thank him for it? let ron paul build his fame under ron paul.org while he gets traffic and ad money with ron paul dot com under ron paul's picture and name? hilarious

this is like if michael started michaelnystrom.com and it became the biggest ron paul grassroots central, somehow let it expire and somebody else took it over, but we all still hang around that site and the guy asks michael for 250k, when the traffic and the audience are of the original and only there because of michael's work in the first place. but no michael is for some reason defending this hobo.

Michael Nystrom's picture

And what happened to personal responsibility?

If I let the domain expire, and someone else picked it up - well, guess what? That would be my mistake. That's the free market for you. It is the law of the jungle, essentially. I wouldn't expect the government to step in and forcibly give it back to me.

All art is only done by the individual. The individual is all you ever have, and all schools only serve to classify their members as failures. E.H.

your mistake and you pay for it by having to go through the

extra trouble to do what you have to do to get it back. what's contradictory to what i said? how about you respond to my post below instead see if there's any inaccuracies in how i presented your position.

salesman: i would like to sell you this newspaper for $1000

per subscription

ron paul: that's too much

salesmen: what, you are anti-free market now? hypocrite

michael nystorm steps in: value is subjective. it might really be worth $1000 because the newspaper owner thinks his writing is worth $1000 per issue. no you don't really need any standard, it's all subjective. oh, by the way, ron paul can afford it, so that's totally a plus.

Michael Nystrom's picture

First of all it is Nystrom

And as you requested above, I will go through your argument:

value is subjective.

Correct. Value is determined in the marketplace, and is completely subjective. The determination of value comes about when two participants voluntarily and mutually agree on what that value is.

it might really be worth $1000 because the newspaper owner thinks his writing is worth $1000 per issue.

It might be. But if no one is willing to pay that price for it, it is not. If one person is, then that issue is indeed worth that amount, at that time. Look at the stock market. Prices change everyday. At its IPO, Facebook was worth $45 per share - for a while. Today it is worth much less, based on what people are willing to buy and sell at.

no you don't really need any standard, it's all subjective.

Ideally you need a standard unit of measure. That is the purpose of money (one of the purposes). But yes, all value is subjective. If you're dying of thirst in the desert, a glass of water will be much more valuable to you than if you're at home in the kitchen. For more on "price gouging" see what Ron Paul has to say about it.

oh, by the way, ron paul can afford it, so that's totally a plus.

It is always a plus if you can afford what you want to buy. In this case, in spite of the fact that he has the money, and could conduct a free market transaction, he has instead chosen to go to the UN for an arbitration hearing.

I personally find this disappointing. It is another example of the "Do as I say, not as I do" song and dance that we get from all politicians.

All art is only done by the individual. The individual is all you ever have, and all schools only serve to classify their members as failures. E.H.

Thank you..

I should have created a better post. P.au.L made a better one. I didn't realize this post was gonna be a hot one. :)

Personally, I'm glad he's going for it. I know some won't

agree with me but $848,000 and $250,000 is outrageous. It sounds as though RP possibly offered $50,000 which is reasonable. Who knows what someone in the future might host on those websites.

I've said before, if it was registered to me, I would be thrilled to be able to donate the registration to Dr. Paul.

i dont think rp.com has a good way to win

Ron Paul has his name trademarked, and he could come down on them pretty hard if that's the case.

I got this from Facebook..

The comments are intense. 95% of people are pissed at the owners and 'unliking' their page.
