Houston City Council Passes Ordinance to Fingerprint, Photograph Precious Metal Sellers

Wednesday, February 06, 2013 - HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Next time you try to sell gold, silver or other precious metals you can expect to be fingerprinted and photographed.

The Houston City Council passed an ordinance meant to help track down criminals who try to resell stolen valuables. Gold-buying businesses will now be required to photograph and fingerprint sellers as well as photograph the items that are being sold to the dealer.

"It's going to allow us the tools necessary to combat a lot of the high-end jewelry thefts that's going on in the city, whether it's robberies or burglaries," said Houston Police Officer Rick Barajas.

A similar ordinance is already in place for scrap metal sellers and dealers.

There's a fairly simple free

There's a fairly simple free market solution to this problem: Stop handling your precious metals business in Houston. Instead, take your business to another city/town that respects your privacy.

Just as an example, there's a town not far from here where it has been illegal to sell alcohol for many years. Just outside of that town is a liquor store which I've always heard is one of the top grossing liquor stores due to the law forbidding alcohol sales in the neighboring town.

Same exact thing can happen in Houston. Coin shops should be scrambling to hurry and open locations right outside of Houston. Whoever does it first will probably reap the majority of the rewards.

Love won! Deliverance from Tyranny is on the way! Col. 2:13-15

Uh-Ohhh, get this-

The ordinance doesn't apply to Pawn Shops!

buh-buh-but, why? Because an existing law prohibits fingerprinting and picture taking in Pawn Shops.

Makes perfect sense to me...puke.

They are going to have a hard time enforcing this. Can't have it both ways.

This Houston Mayor can't kiss Obama's butt enough no matter how much he shits on her.

"If you want something you've never had before, you have to do something you've never done before." Debra Medina

Same in Louisiana

They passed a law, that is practically unnoticed by LA citizens, that it is illegal to use cash to buy second hand stuff YET pawn shops are exempt. They always have there stated reasons but we know that it is just more war against our freedom and another way to make us all criminals.

Let me reiterate: All these laws on the books are to make everyone criminal in some way so that they can have "legal" leverage over everyone.

LoL. Watch all the Gold

LoL.
Watch all the Gold dealers move outside the city limits to the suburbs, problem solved.

Southern Agrarian

This is ALL UNCONSTITUTIONAL CRAP!!!!

Government has become obsolete and absolutely disrespectful to our rights to life, liberty and property!

Enough is enough! Time to get rid of positions of power so people can't acquire them!

Anyone who voted for such an ordinance is a traitor and criminal! And needs to be dealt with accordingly!

Give up your Liberty for FAKE SECURITY! Yes ALL POWERFUL and ALMIGHTY STATE!!! ANYTHING YOU SAY!!!! NOT!!!!! bunch of losers and scum buckets!

If they want to fight crime, they should start by locking themselves up!

Love Liberty, be Vigilant

"Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty" (2 Corinthians 3:17)

Faith in God will prevail all things!

Nope not unconstitutional at all.

The Dealers contract with GovCorp to follow their rules. You contract with the Dealer when you walk in to sell your gold. You are free to either sell it or not depending on the conditions.

People in this liberty movement frequently tend to overlook the "unlimited right to contract" clause as well as do not seem to have an adequate understanding of contract law to realize how they are consenting to these "unconstitutional" things which makes that consent - constitutional.

FDR was quoted once as saying "We have to be very careful how we do this - or we could be charged with treason."

After 1933 the FED gov CORP got heavily involved with the individual on a contractual basis. They contract with you the moment you open your eyes in this new world. The best thing you could do for a newborn baby is to have him/her born with a midwife (somewhere still "legal" to do so) and have NO "birth certificate" only a family bible entry of the new born baby.

I wonder if these people

I wonder if these people realize that you can refine your own gold at home with ease. Instructions no more than a youtube search away and 5-10 minutes of your time. Don't let that stop you from creating a bunch of legislation and an expensive to implement system that will be side stepped with ease though.

So the store owner would be criminal?

What a bunch of idiots.

Gold isn't worth much, guys. It can't even be used as money:

Didn't you know?!

So, what's the point?

Lollipops, chewing gum, T-shirts, and ray-bans ARE valuables, too, you know. What about those and their points of sales?

The Bernank is correct about tradition ...

And that is what this law is against. The tradition of Freedom.

screws it up for the rest, this is how our system works. Texas has a lot of hypocrisy.
