The "Super Cropper" DIY Hydroponic Set Up

There are 5 basic types of hydroponic gardening.

Ebb and Flow (intermittent flood and drain)
DWC (Deep Water Culture: Roots sit in aerated nutrient solution)
Aeroponic (Fine mist either sprayed, fogged, or dripped on roots)
Wick System (Wicks moisture up from reservoir)
NFT (Nutrient Film Technique)

This home built system uses NFT and is a fairly inexpensive method for those with a little more room to spread out. The nutrient flows along the bottom of the channels and back into the reservoir. It's also a pretty good use for those vinyl fence posts, and doesn't require a bunch of growing medium. This could also be expanded and used in a larger aquaponics system.
