Monsanto vs. Mother Nature: Guess who's winning?

By Jim Hightower | Boulder Weekly

If you fool with Mother Nature, she’ll most likely fool with you — usually in very unpleasant ways.

Monsanto, the biotech profiteer, keeps rediscovering this reality, but never seems to learn from it. For more than a decade, it has aggressively pushed its genetically altered corn and soybean seeds on American farmers. Called “Roundup Ready,” the seeds have had their genes altered specifically so the resulting corn plants and soybeans can tolerate heavier doses of an herbicide called “Roundup.” Who makes this weed killer? Monsanto — so its Frankenseeds are really nothing but a marketing scheme to sell and spread more pesticide.

But Roundup kills those pesky weeds, so farmers gain, right?

Wrong.

This is another one of those 'unintended consequences'

of messing with something without understanding the design of it. The same thing happens when antibiotics are overused. The antibiotics become less and less effective, as the viruses become resistant. The weeds are doing the same thing... Seems that big Pharma/Gov and big Agri/Gov are either rather dense or malicious. (although it could be both)

I wish Mother nature would

I wish Mother nature would get serious and strike every Monsanto building with lightening and destroy them! They are destroying the planet and will soon cause a catastrophic failure in the food supply. Everyone now has PCB's from roundup that right you have them in your body and they have even found them in Arctic animals they have polluted the entire planet. But hey as long as Farmers can make a profit lets keep dousing mother earth with chemicals and pesticides who cares if they destroy the planet... Wake the fuck up farmers!

As a farmer, I benefit from Roundup Ready Soybeans.

Look people, be objective on the subject. The author of the report has most likely never stepped foot on a farm and his opinion is nothing more than that, an opinion. There is no mention of what the weeds are resistant to, which for your information is glyphosate. Before Roundup, we were suffering from weeds that were resistant to the herbicides of that time. Roundup allowed us farmers to open up new areas to farming (South America) and to increase our profits, which allowed for the purchase of newer technology and opening up of further land for farming.

Quit trying to demonize something that has been so beneficial to the world. Monsanto, John Deere, ADM, CNH, BASF, and any other agricultural giant, or member of the ag industry, have been involved in resolving the world's biggest killer, FAMINE. Everyone forgets how China had 50 MILLION starve to death. Or Russia's 30-50 MILLION that starved to death. Now these countries import transgenic grain or animal protein that was fed on transgenics. Organics are great, but they won't feed the world. That requires large scale, intensive farming and the utilization of the most modern technology.

And as a final note, Roundup Ready Soybeans have NEVER harmed anyone; the person that chose to eat that product harmed themselves by making such choice.

Anything for a buck. Huh?

Please tell us who you are selling your "Roundup Ready" crops to so I can avoid them.

Check out Monsanto's history if you have any doubts about who the biggest killers are.

FYI, Selling drugs might be more profitable.

I agree with you

Because Americans have been so blessed with abundance in food, and food choices, they fail to remember, THERE ARE PEOPLE STARVING.

Problem is distribution.

The cyanide laced cocaine dealer:

"Hey man... cyanide laced cocaine NEVER harmed anyone: the idiot that chose to buy it from me and snort it harmed themselves by making the choice"

Well ...

Technically you're right. I guess.

Rationalization is a helluva drug.

So is sociopathy.

Pretty much...

I agree, it doesn't sound nice, but hey, choices are choices. If I buy the crappy food, or the crappy drugs, then I might get some crappy side effects, like death. Eat at a 5 star restaurant and you will most likely never get food poisoning. Eat from the street vendor and you might get sick every so often. You get what you pay for.

Dude the people who ate

Dude the people who ate roundup ready soy beans had no idea what they were eating and thought they eating natural food. if you sell poison to people and tell them its natural food it not their fault they ate it. it is the poison pushers fault!

There is a better way we have to change! GMO and pesticides and chemical fertilizers have been proven extremely harmful to the environment and to humanity. We cannot feed the world at the expense of planet then no one will get fed. We were feeding the world long before Monsanto and chemicals. Russians and Chinese starved because of Communism trying to micro manage food production not because they did not have Monsanto

And we can feed the world with organics check it out.

Conventional or Organic farming is also bad for the enviornment

Tilling the soil to kill the weeds, common organic/conventional farmer practice, exposes the land to terrible erosion. Before no till, my father used to stay up at night when it rained, just thinking what would be left of the fields the next day. Erosion is one of the most dangerous types of environmental damages caused by farming. It pollutes rivers through sediments and nitrogen runoff (manure), destroys soil structure rendering fields unarable for years or even decades, lowers crop yields, damages neighbors fields that are downhill or downstream, causes flooding of cities and other people's crops....

Organic farmers utilize manure and other natural fertilizers, which at times can contaminate ground water or river or basically any water source; much the same way that normal chemical fertilizer does.

Organic pesticides can be just as dangerous to the environment, and in some cases even worse. Many require several applications because they are not as effective. Just because a pesticide is derived from natural sources doesn't mean that it is safe for the environment.

Yes the Chinese and the Russians starved because of their governments getting involved in the food market. So let's keep the government out of the food market in the USA. Allow the market to decide what is better or not. Don't allow the government to decide if transgenics are safe or not, that will be decided by the market. Don't create regulations on what can be planted or not, the market will decide. The more government involvement in agriculture, the less food we farmers can produce. Total government control of food production will equal the famine that occurred in Russian and China.

deacon's picture

as an ex farmer

are you suggesting we eat crap
that has no benefit? and to also feed our animals
the same crap?
but i guess we weren't lazy farmers we had hoes
and cultivators to weed our fields
and never used roundup or monsanto
but ask yourself why people starve
round up never hurt anyone??
seriously? it has been found in the arctic ice!!
this isn't harm?
and all the while it was touted as not harming the environment

If we deny truth before your very eyes, then the rest of what we have to say,is of little consequence

You have bought into their theory

I am an organic farmer, and Monsanto is an enemy to me. You are not, they are.
You think you benefit, plant them. But please control your pollen. I want heirloom organic. Your pollen contaminates my crops. My pollen does not contaminate yours.
Oh, and if you really want to end famine, go to aquaponics. One system in every neighborhood prevents famine that results from supply line disruption.

Love or fear? Chose again with every breath.

I won't contaminate your crops...

If I do, then sue me for doing so. If the system fails to provide you compensation, then the problem isn't that I planted the crops that contaminated yours, but the judicial system that no longer functions. In that case, you have lost your right to your property. Unfortunately that is the place that you live in. As time goes by you lose more and more of your rights, eventually you will have none.

So remember, the problem isn't that another farmer planted corn that pollinated with yours, but that you were unable to be compensated for the damages. Preventing me from planting corn on my field will only take away my right to my property. In the end not only do you have less rights, but so do I; and guess who has that right that we lost...the government.

How are you controlling pollen drift?

Your corn can be contaminating others for miles around, and what an arrogont attitude, "sue me!"
You have a scewed idea of what liberty is if you think it means "I can harm others as long as I can get away with it"! REALLY! think about that?
!

You, and your murderous cohorts spend millions of dollars

bribing corrupt politicians, and infiltrating high level government positions in order to gain immunity for your morally bankrupt activities, and then blame the judicial system for being broken. And on top of that, you have the audacity to it claim that the organic farmers are trying to destroy your right to poison the planet.

And you claim that there is no real proof of the dangers of GMO crops after falsifying research data and lobbying to make sure the truth doesn't come to light. I personally hope you, and your family consume lots of your your crops.

BTW, I work in the wellness industry and have to deal with the ramifications of your toxic products, and immoral behavior on unsuspecting consumers every day.

[Wrong, everybody loses except Monsanto.]

My neighbors mother just died from lipomas

which is linked to eating GMO corn and soy beans! What say all those that think Monsatan should continue business as usual?

pigweed

is one of those weeds that have become resistant to Round-up here in NC. Pigweed used to be a smaller plant here, but now it grows tall with a long taproot, and spraying pesticide not longer kills it. When will they wake up.
