Meteorite Hits Russia Urals: Fireball Explosion Wrecks Havoc, Over 900 Injured (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

http://youtu.be/4ZxXYscmgRg

Russia’s Urals region has been rocked by a meteorite explosion in the stratosphere. The impact wave damaged several buildings, and blew out thousands of windows amid frigid winter weather. Hundreds are seeking medical attention for minor injuries.

Army units found three meteorite debris impact sites, two of which are in an area near Chebarkul Lake, west of Chelyabinsk. The third site was found some 80 kilometers further to the northwest, near the town of Zlatoust. One of the fragments that struck near Chebarkul left a crater six meters in diameter.

Servicemembers from the tank brigade that found the crater have confirmed that background radiation levels at the site are normal.

Russian space agency Roskosmos has confirmed the object that crashed in the Chelyabinsk region is a meteorite:

“According to preliminary estimates, this space object is of non-technogenic origin and qualifies as a meteorite. It was moving at a low trajectory with a speed of about 30 km/s.”

I guess it takes an actual Russian

To clear the lies about this event. What in fact happened there that there were 500+ call about blown off windows, not 500+ injuries. There were only 2-3 dozen of injuries, mostly those who cut themselves on said windows (unlucky, but nothing serious) and elderly ladies who have problems with blood pressure and that was a stressful occurrence obviously.

Yes, I'm a Russian, and yes, I have a contact in that particular city.

That's why you can never trust media without checking things for yourself. Tendency to overblow things is ridiculous. Like it's a major disaster here or something. While in fact it's just a carrot on the stick for people to get excited about.

Several articles mentioned

that cell phones quit working. Is this also hype or is there some cause for it. None of the articles explained how a fireball would interfere with cell phone operation. I could understand that they would quit working if a nuke went off at high altitude (EMP), but have never heard that a fireball produced an EMP.

Thanks

Sensationalism sells and so does BS.

The pond is ridiculous. It is perfectly symmetrical as if the thing dropped from straight down lol

Not sure which is scarier...the meteorite or...

...that dude's driving.

Doesn't seem like an ordinary meteorite

The ones that have (supposedly) fallen in our area did not leave any sort of contrails. Makes sense that it was intercepted by a missile- or was some sort of weapon.

Also, the building photographed in the article with the blown out windows seems off. The sashes are not painted on the broken windows; whereas, the ones that aren't broken are. It seems to me like the building was dilapidated and then recently residents have replaced some of the windows with new painted ones.

Really, who knows what happened coming from Russia, right? It is also very odd that the military has already investigated all the impact sites and determined it's all safe. We all know how extremely hard it is locate these things, especially in a mostly remote area. And it would take some time to deploy the military to the area.

Enterprising Russians Put Meteor Fragments For Sale

[These guys are thinking like capitalists. The question is are these fragments genuine or not? That would really be the sign or true capitalism, attempting to scam the public.]

In a shining example of true form capitalism, Russian scammers opportunists took advantage of the cosmic fury at the ongoing G-20 meeting in Moscow expressed by an attempted bombardment via meteor (which allegedly left the hole shown in the picture below), and are already seeking to find the level of equilibrium demand for cosmic commodities and market clearing prices by offering pieces of the meteor for sale on local websites.

"Vladimir Zhirinovsky denies meteorite, claims US weapons tests"

Russian nationalist lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky, long known for his flamboyance and outrageous remarks, said Friday that meteorite fragments had not rained down on Russia in the morning, but that the light flashes and tremors in several of the country’s regions resulted from US weapons tests, APA reports quoting RIA Novosti.

“Those aren’t meteors falling, it’s the Americans testing new weapons.”

Good thing the Cold War is

Good thing the Cold War is over. This might have been used to fire up the WMDs.

Anyone Notice the date on the video?

December 31st, 2012

Unless this is some grand joke, the date on the video puts this occurrence at New Years Eve.

Why is this now just making news?

Just an observation.

The dates on most video camera's

do not auto set. You can set them for almost any date, or not even set them at all.
Unless you personally know the person making the recording and know that they will always set the correct date and time, then you can't count on the date or time on the video being correct.

it's like VCR time

Some people left their VCR's flash 12:00 all the time - never setting the clock properly.

So - yeah - don't pay attention to dates or times on a camera.

Big writeup in the Daily Mail

many photo's and videos

The article says this is not related to DA14 (due later today) and was "just a coincidence"! Strange coincidence in my opinion.

RT just changed their headline to over 900 injured.

This destruction is getting worse.
Question: How do you get injured by a meteor?

Meteorite hits Russian Urals: Fireball explosion wreaks havoc, over 900 injured (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

They're saying broken glass,

but if the explosion we saw in the video was the only one, 900 sounds way off. The driver didn't rock and we could see the buildings nearby not look that bad. It did go over an area with a lot of buildings later, though.

Defend Liberty!

Yea, I Tried To Update The Article, But Was Unable To Do So..

See my comments below...

IMO

This was some kind of missile test that went bad.
