(Washington Examiner) California Police Chief Ken James insisted earlier this month that the idea of a gun as a “defensive weapon” was a “myth.” Speaking at a news conference about gun control with California lawmakers, James explained that he was concerned with the amount of weapons owned by American citizens.

“One issue that always boggles my mind is that the idea that a gun is a defensive weapon,” James said. “That is a myth. A gun is not a defensive weapon.”

LOL !

LOL !

What am I missing? Huh? THAT, a myth? Or a fallacious reasoning?

A gun is NEITHER all defensive or all offensive. It is to be defensive when you're being attacked by someone else's guns, or it is to be offensive when you want to use force against peaceful people, right, THUGS? Right, Government and your PERVERTED Laws?

All defensive vs. all offensive? All black vs. all white?

This is just SILLY. If not IDIOTIC. You can DIE drowning in water. So, water is bad?

You can ALSO DIE, dehydrated this time, if you don't get water in 5 days. So, water is good?

How about: water is either BAD or GOOD to sustain life or destroy it?

How about: depends WHEN, HOW, and WHAT FOR you get the water?

Same with: knives, cars, etc.

Cars DO NOT KILL. People driving them, CAN KILL, however, sometimes - using cars. Etc, etc.

Goodness. Now the police think they have found a new hobby : logics and semantics. Still some way to go, I'm afraid, gentlemen...

Back to the point:

THE PEOPLE MUST KEEP THEIR RIGHT TO BEAR ARMS, DEFENSIVELY - IF NECESSARY, AND THAT'D BE AGAINST ANY POTENTIAL AGGRESSOR - ESPECIALLY THE BIGGEST OF ALL : GOVERNMENT.

What is so difficult to understand in A TWO LINE SECOND AMENDMENT?

Maybe some in the police should start by reading it - there is NOWHERE WRITTEN "the right to bear DEFENSIVE arms" or "OFFENSIVE arms" used in there:

Do some in the police have HALLUCINATIONS?

Or IS IT ME?

BAM !

Q.E.D.

The Dumbing Down of Western Civilization, including the USA, by statist propaganda.

There you have it.

I propose a ZERO-th Amendment :

the right for law enforcement TO USE THEIR BRAINS, too.

Jesus.

Why So Many Police Chiefs Favor Gun Control...

Why So Many Police Chiefs Favor Gun Control, When Most Sheriffs Don’t

Ammoland.com (A good gun freedom site, folks. I recommend a bookmark.)

"Sheriffs are by and large a different breed. They are elected by the people with a larger proportional number of citizens than city officials. The sheriff does not have to please a few city council members, a goofy mayor (or a governor). Sheriffs represent the beliefs and values of the majority of the area of his or her citizens who directly voted them into office. Yes, there will be sheriffs who do not want guns in the hands of citizens, but nothing like the number of police chiefs who have a near immediate career ending gun held to their heads by anti-Constitution politicians or the chief culture."

That's the closest thing to an honest admission of guilt

concerning a government's monopoly on violence I've ever heard.

In some small, tertiary way it'd almost be commendable if not for the blatant anti-citizen stance such an admission clearly implies.

If guns were only offensive weapons

their would be 100's of millions of homicides every year. 3/4 of the population would be in prison for murder.

Hell they aren't!

3 years ago I surrounded by 3 guys in Gary, IN, when one of them was in mid windup to hit me in the face when I pulled a 38spl and just held it up alongside my face and smiled at him.

Having all my teeth and a straight nose is testament to how effective a pistol is as a defense weapon.

Chief Ken James thinks guns are not for defense like moustaches are for picking up chicks.

If not defensive...why does he have one?

If guns are not defensive, then why do cops have them? To go on the offensive?

I disagree.

Someone should have towed

Someone should have towed that blue Nissan truck riddled with over 30 LAPD bullets behind him while he gave his little speach.

We all share this eternally evolving present moment- The past and future only exist as inconsequential mental fabrications.

Guns Are Weapons

...used to intimidate and demonstrate power... (Well he got that part right. Just the sort of law enforcement scum a police state needs). People need to speak out at these press conferences and publicly vilify, humiliate, and shame these cretons.

my thoughts exactly!

Thats ok for the cops...

...now that they have switched to burning people to death.

Disarm that Man

Cops can hand out daisies to the gang bangers.

it's not a defensive weapon in HIS hands maybe

Maybe in his hands it's an attack weapon

But for women and older men it is the great equalizer that gives criminals reason to think twice.

True Enough!

But I say it depends on the intent of the individual using the weapon..

Is it a Myth,,,

That the police chief is an ELECTED official? (the term official is debatable)

Chief of Police

Chief of police

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A Chief of Police (also known as Police Chief or sometimes shortened to just Chief) is the title typically given to the top official in the chain of command of a police department, particularly in North America.

Alternative titles for this position include Commissioner, Superintendent, and Chief constable. In contrast to a US Sheriff, who is generally elected by the voters of a county, except in the states of Rhode Island and Hawaii,[1] a Chief of Police is usually a municipal employee who owes his or her allegiance to a city or town.

Some states have both an appointed and an elected Chief of Police (Louisiana). In some jurisdictions, the head of the police commission is the leader of the police and holds a position analogous or similar to the one described here, in this case, he or she is referred to as Commissioner. The New York City Police Department has both a Police Commissioner and a Chief, formerly called the Chief Inspector, now called the Chief of Department. In Louisiana, a Chief of Police may serve as the Chief of Police, Marshal, and Constable for a city. The fraternal organization International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) is an organization often associated with many Chiefs of Police.

Note: In the city of San Jose the police chief is promoted from within most of the time. Years ago, Joseph P. McNamara was given the job because he was very well educated (Phd.) and at the same time had worked law enforcemnt in The Harlem district...I can tell you he was a good beer drunk. He use to frequent the liquor store next to my business office..

In the County of Santa Clara, our Sheriff, Laurie Smith was elected several times to the position..

I wonder how he would explain

the 200,000+ women who use guns every year to stop sexual assault? Somehow they were not defending themselves with a gun?

The problem with unelected police

This guy is just a tool of the City's administration. To protect and serve the City.

To Become a Police Chief In The Big Cities Is Mostly Political

This guy may be just totting the party line, so to speak. It may be his superiors have a political agenda and so they want him as their 'front man' to speak to the issue..so as to disguise their political beliefs.

Most of the DP'ers have common sense.

What say you? Is a gun a defensive weapon, an offensive weapon or both an offensive weapon?

A bad guy may use it as a offensive weapon, whereas a citizen threatened by harm from an intruder would use it as a defensive weapon.

ANSWER: It all depends on weather you are using the weapon to attack or to defend...
