What is Love?

It's been really interesting to see the responses to various threads here asking questions such as, 'What is God?', 'What is Liberty?', etc.

I think that all (most, many?) of us here would agree that an essential, if not the most essential factor in fostering a r3VOLution for Liberty, is that it be done with Love.

Given that, I'd really 'love' to hear responses to the following questions:

- What is Love? Where does it come from? Is it something transcendent or not?

- Do you agree that Love is the foundation of Liberty, or is it just a nice-to-have thing on the side?

- Will Liberty last in a society that does not have Love?

I think you probably know my views already from other threads (Christian, Platonic view on ideal Love existing and being essential); but I'm interested to hear the variety of views that are out there on 'what is Love?'.

Kind of fits in with us just having celebrated Valentine's Day, I guess. :)

To me

Love is my beautiful girlfriend in her tight jeans and 4 inch heels!

OK

But will you love her when she does not fit well into her jeans later while other cute girls are walking around?

Man...

I think we have a hot girl in tight jeans and 4 inch heels burn here... lol

but very true point ;)

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Agreed!

Absolutely!

Love is like giving someone a

Love is like giving someone a gun, pointing it at your heart, and trusting them not to pull the trigger. That is love. Trust.

Unless they shoot you

in which case it's foolish lol
No offense, I see what you're saying ;-)

Hey that's true though!

love is foolish and doesn't make sense sometimes. Love is also caring for someone and being loving in very unloving times and situations...that is very difficult and doesn't seem to make sense from an inward point of view.

Too cynical?

Here, how about this... this is love...

Either one works.

Love is love and to answer OP's question about liberty working in a society without love... well... I guess any society without love is going to have a hard time functioning.

Sorry, religious folks,

How very sad

you are. Why such intolerance?

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.
James Madison

Tolerance?

You mean it is tolerable when the King of Love condemns libertarian muslims to torture in hell?

Capitalism finally ended slavery and torture. Why do you tolerate torture from the most "loving" entity? But back to real thing. The link I posted above refutes rationality of "love for your neighbor."

Also...

God is God. If He wants to just damn everyone to hell and get rid of us all no matter our choices that is His Devine right as the Creator of the universe...

Or can we keep this discussion about love please? :) God is judgement, but He is first love.

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

Do we really have to bring that

to this thread too? We are judged by our own choices. God is loving enough to let us choose. If we choose against Him and our sins are not whipped away we cannot come into His presence. It doesn't matter what your race, religion or political preference is. If you deny Christ He will deny you before His Father and if you accept the free gift of salvation He alone offers then His blood will cover your sins and you will be saved.

Let's focus on this thread as being a more light-hearted discussion please. If you want to debate religion, relationship with God and so forth please do it on the other discussion posts.

Isaiah 2:4
And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.

The function of the mind

is to separate, group and categorize experiences then a judgement is formed based on the character of the individual. One can 'change one's mind' based on new experiences and insight.

Love doesn't divide, but it does conquer all.

If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy.

Love is ...

“Love is by definition an unmerited gift; being loved without meriting it is the very proof of real love. If a woman tells me: I love you because you're intelligent, because you're decent, because you buy me gifts, because you don't chase women, because you do the dishes, then I'm disappointed; such love seems a rather self-interested business. How much finer it is to hear: I'm crazy about you even though you're neither intelligent nor decent, even though you're a liar, an egotist, a bastard.”
