Garbage Warrior-Got Beer Cans, Water Bottles & Tires?

What do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you're renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century.

Inspiring!

Struggling against a convention-obsessed bureaucracy is a bitch, even for delusional junk science hippies who are trying to save the planet. There is much to learn from this video for anyone who thinks the America's infrastructure may not serve us forever, especially for those who can't afford the latest technology. The group's reception in tsunami-ravaged Indonesia made my eyes start to well up with tears.

I expect to have the architectural freedom these people sought in Arizona when I build in the Ecuadorian rain forest.

New Hampshire and Ecuador.

Well

Send us a postcard or some pics !! Best of luck !

On The Garbage Warrior

I'm in favor of "off the grid" living. (former liveaboard - the original "off the grid" folks.) I went back and watched the entire video. I learned nothing. I knew what this guy knows a long time ago and I know things he has yet to learn. Kudos to him for practicing his skills and reaping the benefit. If he believes the global warming crap he's a statist, or is at least, suspect. The video was beneficial for many, but I am not one of them.

Except he's a doer and living

Except he's a doer and living it what are you doing? Also much of what you know probably originally came form this guy since he is a pioneer of the whole earthship concept

Stayed at the heliohouse for a week. Highly recommended. A really neat house with complementary coffee and a fruit basket. The views were great and so was the house. The heliohouse is in the earthship community just west of Taos, NM. Regardless of Reynolds political views, the guy's a great builder, and living off grid is a good idea.

That is wonderful you could experience this. Thanks for sharing !

The verdict is still out

for me on global warming BUT I thoroughly enjoyed this documentary and I watched the whole thing.

I do believe in creating more sustainable energy and being good stewards of the world we have been given.

This man is creative and you can tell he cares and gives his life to what he loves.

I could not agree more

Are these homes possible somewhere else besides the southwest where there are hard freezes??

Yes...

I built one in So. Colorado. This winter we had a spell of -30 degree nights. I heat with only one wood stove...usually just in the evenings & only in the late fall/winter/early spring seasons. Earthships are WAY better insulated & have thermal mass unlike most conventional homes so yes, they work anywhere a normal house would.

Thank you so much

For your response. Did you use an actual "Earthship" plan or something you contrived?

Inspiring.

Worth watching.

It was

Long but it was very good especially at the end to see what they did in India.

Careful with the labels.

Careful with the labels. Just because someone is _______, it doesnt mean what they are practicing is not worthy of practicing yourself. Youre almost as bad as gun control advocates who refuse to put signs in the front of their home telling people they are proudly gun free.

If you overlook the global warming BS

Earthships are pretty cool. My problem with them is that they are real expensive so I will stick to cob. It's cheap, holds up forever and is easy to heat and cool. http://www.cobprojects.info/

skippy

beautiful

I've seen from the inside out a wall build out of multi-colored bottles and it was stunning and beautiful~
